8 Viking-Style Churches to Visit (Not Pillage)

"The ornate wooden church known simply as the Chapel In The Hills was built to house a Lutheran radio show, and based both in architecture and construction on an ancient Norwegian holy house.  Finished in 1969, the ornate church was built by Rev. Conrad Thompson, a Lutheran minister who had previously spent time in Norway and fallen in love with the rustic appeal of their historic churches. Looking for a place to house his fellow reverend and radio show, Lutheran Vespers, this new church was based on the famous Borgund stave church which had survived in Norway since its construction around the year 1150. Thompson actually sourced the original blueprints for the ancient Borgund church from the Norwegian Department of Antiquities and built the Chapel In The Hills to be an exact replica of its Norwegian forbearer. Like the original, the South Dakota recreation was built almost entirely out of wood, including wooden dowels that hold the whole thing together. It has been speculated that it was the wood’s ability to expand and contract with the elements across the centuries that allowed the Borgund church to survive as intact as it did. Both the interior and the exterior of the Chapel In The Hills are covered in intricate carvings which were etched by both local artisans and a Norwegian specialist who was brought in to recreate the themes of the original church. In addition to the replica chapel, two other structures were built in the turf-roofed tradition. Lutheran Vespers was broadcast from one of the turf buildings until 1975. However, the Chapel In The Hills is still owned and operated by the Lutheran church to this day. It is now a popular place for weddings and will hopefully survive for just as long as its Norwegian predecessor." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Chapel in the Hills is an absolutely beautiful and peaceful place to visit. The rich history of the chapel is fascinating, and the audio narration they offer is well worth listening to — it really helps you appreciate the story behind it all. The prayer walk is amazing and so thoughtfully designed, providing a quiet and reflective space surrounded by nature. They even have a scavenger hunt in the gift shop for the kids, which was such a fun bonus and kept them engaged while we explored. Overall, it’s a truly special stop that feels both inspiring and welcoming. Highly recommend taking the time to visit!

This was a really fantastic place to visit, and I recommend going if you are in the area. The big church chapel is apparently a replica of a Norwegian chapel. It was very beautiful to visit and look at. There is also a mini museum not far from the chapel and a really cool gift shop with Norwegian books and wooden nativities. I bought one of the nativities, as I learned someone had carved them and made them on their own. I do feel the history could be better explained. I just wish there was more of a tour that explained the history in depth. There is an audio tour in the chapel and signs that explain the history, but it would be nice to have a guide to explain all the pieces of the puzzles in the place. We didn't have a long time here, nor could you spend a long time here, but I would definitely recommend seeing this and asking about the history because not all the questions and sites are fully explained.

This church is one of those hidden gems that you'd never just stumble upon. An exact replica of a Norwegian kirke built in the 1100's, it is a beautiful wooden work of art in addition to being a house of worship. An audio tape orients you to the church and grounds, which you can explore at your leisure. The gift shop and small museum are worth a look. There are also two short paths to walk near the church. Enjoy the quiet stillness of this magnificent little church in the hills near Rapid City.

During a very busy vacation sightseeing the a black Hills, a visit to Chapel in the Hills was like hitting the slow motion button in a really good way. There was a sense of peace and calm. Our family took the time to take the prayer walk ((very short walk in the woods behind the chapel). I appreciated the attention to detail in the wood, even the rain spouting was made from wood. I highly recommend taking the time to visit this extraordinary site. Didn't miss the gift shop either.

Google
Very interesting to learn how and why this Norwegian chapel was built in South Dakota. Stunning architecture. The prayer walk is a short walk with benches for quiet reflection and prayer. If you like to visit unique chapels, include this one.

Google
Gorgeous place! A must visit on a beautiful day! It has a museum, gift shop, and a trail called the "prayer walk." The chapel itself is small, but incredible! Go go go!

It was an unexpected place to visit after leaving busy rapid streets. We walked the Prayer trail, with many nice statues that were hiding in the trees. The chapel has unusual architecture. Come inside, take time to enjoy it.

Google
I was really impressed. I didn't know that there was an exact replica of the Norwegian 1108 church, but in this case, it was built in 1969. It's a very peaceful place, and you can really appreciate the architecture work and the spiritual environment in this place.

Yelp
Super nice and very beautiful spot for a quick stop. It was motivational and God centric and I loved it:)

Yelp
This is a neat stop in Rapid City. The chapel itself is an exact reproduction of the famous Borgund Stavkirke, built in 1969. When you go in the chapel, there is a green button that plays a quick recording of the chapel. A little lesson of the building and the different details of the chapel. Take 20 minutes and check it out.

Yelp
From the moment we booked our date Pastor Matt was very helpful and giving us information on how to plan for our special day. Pastor did a phenomenal job on our wedding day. We highly recommend Chapel in the Hills .Staff is super nice and inviting. We cannot be any happier with pastor Matt officiating our wedding..

Yelp
What an amazing place this is. I love Norwegian and Scandinavian architecture and history. This place has it all and more. I was in awe of the Chapel. There is a small museum and gift shop. There are also statues on a short trail. It was a fun couple of hours in a peaceful, magical place. I highly recommend it.

Yelp
Chapel in the Hills is tucked away behind a big neighborhood and you would never know about it unless you lived there or found it online. It's absolutely beautiful and unique. Unfortunately, visiting during covid there were restrictions. We couldn't go inside the chapel or the small museum, but we could look inside of them through the open doors and windows. The experience and views were still amazing and I felt that we were still able to explore most of the area. I really enjoyed the prayer walk. Although I would not say that I am all that religious it was quiet, peaceful and beautiful. There was lots of greenery, which made it that more amazing. There was also a staff member outside giving everyone a little speech on the history of the chapel, which was nice. There is a small gift shop that you can go inside as well, which had a lot of different items from local artists and photography pieces of the chapel that you can buy. Overall, Chapel in the Hills was really great to see and spend time at.

Yelp
We ended up stopping to take in the sightseeing of this exact replica of a church which the original was constructed back in 1150 Norway. There's so much history to take in and they did a awesome job constructing every detail from the original building. The whole area itself is beautiful and I managed to get many photos ops as I can.

Yelp
Very fun day trip - rode our bikes from town - totally worth doing whether new to the area or local!

Yelp
Very interesting cultural spot to visit situated in an unassuming neighborhood. Friendly volunteer staff greeted us and gave us an unprompted overview of the buildings, chapel, and history of the landmark. Worth stopping by and checking out if you're in the area. Misc: wild turkeys have been spotted here which was interesting to see.

Yelp
I didn't know anything about this place till she told me about it...it's definitely an exquisite built, a replica of Borgund Stavkirke in Norway. It's tucked inside residential area but on open land. Love the wood carvings especially at the different entrances. There's also a gift shop to buy souvenirs. I can understand why this is an ideal photoshoot.

Yelp
We couldn't have asked for a better venue to renew our wedding vows for our 20th anniversary vow renewal. We booked online and the process was very easy. We were able to make payments via paypal. We had a pastor come from Ohio Trinity Church, Pastor Mary Beth. We were able reserve an organist that played a beautiful arrangement. The service itself was about 10-15 minutes and was very sentimental. Not a dry eye in the house. It was my hubby, two daughters, the Pastor, and my photographer. The inside is really small and the intricate wood details are beautiful. The place has an energy to it. We were able to take pictures on the grounds and in front of the beautiful chapel. This is a day that we will cherish for the rest of our lives. Thank you so much to the beautiful staff at the Chapel!

Yelp
Very lovely place to visit in the spring and summer. If you're an artist you will enjoy the architecture and history of the church building. Make sure to walk the little pathways behind the church. Very peaceful grounds.

Yelp
What a lovely piece of architecture. Chapel in the Hills is a beautiful, functioning church that was replicated from Norwegian blueprints. The ground are well-maintained, nestled in a quiet neighborhood making it a relaxing spot to enjoy the outdoors. It is free to visit (although a donation is recommended), and only about 20 mins from Downtown Rapid. Squeezing in a quick stop during your visit to the area is definitely worth it.

Yelp
Chapel in the Hills is a wonderful find!! We discovered it last year and will come back to it every time we are up here. The volunteers are so kind and helpful and the grounds are peaceful. From the prayer walk to the gift shop....not to mention the stave kirke---its all breathtaking!!

Yelp
This is a beautiful replica! So inspiring to find it in the middle of a neighborhood in South Dakota! I loved the audio description of the church (green button located at the back of the actual church) and the grounds were clearly well maintained and loved. Definitely worth a quick stop!

Yelp
If we hadn't done the touristy thing and picked up a number of brochures at a stop, we wouldn't have discovered this gem. When headed to Mt Rushmore, you most likely will be passing through and/or be near downtown Rapid City. Take a 5 minute detour to this charming tribute to Norway; you won't regret it. In this day of modern, plain megabox construction, the Stavkirke Chapel will astound you with its elegance and details. We didn't have the audio narrative when we stopped in, but a kind volunteer told us some factoids about the chapel. See if you can find the leper window. That's where lepers had to gather and accept communion due to their communicable disease.

Yelp
I agree with everyone below; Stavkirke is definitely worth visiting! I don't even know how I found it, except maybe it was in one of the brochures we picked up along the way. This beautiful chapel is one of South Dakota's best kept secrets, unfortunately. I don't know how they do such a good job of keeping up the grounds, the church, and their little museum; there was so little money in the donation jar! I'd like to thank the volunteers who keep an eye on the setting during the day. It was beautiful!

Yelp
Very beautiful place! I did not expect a lot before the visit considering it was a replica, but worth to visit if you travel this area.

Carol A.

Yelp
I haven't been to the chapel in the hills but have seen the stavekirken in borgund. My mom has relatives from that area so we saw where some of them are buried. We couldn't take pictures inside the church only from the outside. about a block away they have another church in the stave fashion but it is painted bright colors. that is the church the people go to in that area. will be fun to see the one in Rapid City.

S G.

Yelp
Open between Memorial Day and Labor Day, daily service at 7:30pm. Guest pastors so each year is a bit different and even though it's a Lutheran service, it's really more non-denominational. There is a little prayer walk tucked behind the chapel. Perfect play to mediate on verses or read in a peaceful outdoor setting. One of my fav locations and glad we live close!
google avatar

Oliver D.

Yelp
Worth taking the trip, if in the area, just to check out the architecture. Norwegian design is impressive, as are the other smaller buildings on the property. The grounds are landscaped well and beautiful as well.

Yelp
Beautiful place. Incredible woodwork. Thought about performing a Viking baptism and then googled it and changed my mind (see urban dictionary). There was a bat in the church. My three-year-old son asked if he could "play" in the yard and I said yes, so he got naked from the waist down (he apparently said "pee").
