The property has direct access to the swimming holes at Oak Creek from its backyard, so be sure to pack your suit. Indoors, the airy living room is decorated in sage greens and oak wood details that mirror the natural landscape outside. With four bedrooms and three bathrooms, there’s plenty of space and privacy for large groups. Half a mile down the road, hikers will find the trailhead for the Cathedral Rock Trail." - Lyndsey Matthews, Nicholas DeRenzo

Great hiking and great architecture! A Spiritual Oasis in the Red Rocks The Chapel of the Holy Cross is a truly unique and awe-inspiring experience. After a moderate but rewarding hike through the stunning red rock formations, we were rewarded with the sight of this architectural marvel. The chapel itself is a masterpiece, seamlessly blending with the surrounding landscape. The interior is serene and peaceful, offering a moment of reflection amidst the grandeur of nature. Tips for Visitors: * Wear comfortable shoes: The hike involves some elevation gain. * Bring plenty of water: Stay hydrated, especially on warmer days. * Respect the sanctity: Speak softly and maintain a reverent atmosphere. Overall: The Chapel of the Holy Cross is a must-visit for anyone exploring Sedona. It's a place of beauty, spirituality, and unforgettable memories. I hope this review is helpful!

Google
It closes at 5 and they block off the entire road and access to the park. The obnoxious residents are super protective and threatening. But pay them no mind. Go and enjoy God's gift to ALL of us. Not just the filthy rich. P.S. they hate loud music. 😀

Google
Very cool hike up the hill. Looks very pristine and nice for a little church. Was way too crowded though, try to come at a non-crowded time. The views are a must to come for. Sometimes there were rude people who would honk at you while trying to get to the church. Hard to find parking and just overrated in general.

Google
TL;DR: Chapel of the Holy Cross in Sedona offers stunning views and a unique experience, especially during a service. Arrive early to beat the crowds and consider parking below to walk up. The Chapel of the Holy Cross is a must-visit spot in Sedona. The architecture is incredible, and the views from the chapel are absolutely breathtaking. If you can time your visit during a service, it adds an extra layer of serenity and connection to the experience. Be prepared for heavy traffic and limited parking—your best bet is to park down below and walk up to the top. Arriving early in the day is highly recommended to get ahead of the crowds. It’s a truly special place that’s well worth the effort!

Google
This is a stunning, scenic chapel in Sedona. It has absolutely gorgeous views, and an awe inspiring inner sanctum. You can stand in a certain spot and look up, and the statue of Jesus will be looking right at you. There is also a gift shop downstairs, full of religious paraphernalia.

Google
Stopped for a visit twice during our trip in December ; we loved it so much. Beautiful, calm and welcoming chapel to pray with great scenery. Boutique is full of various souvenirs and heartwarming gifts.

We came on a Saturday in mid September 2024 after it finally cooled down a bit in Arizona. There were so many people, and parking was extremely difficult. It took us 45 minutes and three rounds to secure a spot. Make sure you get the first spot you see. The chapel is amazing; great architecture and house of worship. 3-day candle costs $5 and 1-day one costs $1. Bring singles if you would like to lit a candle. The chapel also has a small store where religious items and souvenirs can be found. I bought a magnet which captures the amazing view from the chapel. Don’t miss the platform on the side of the chapel where one can see the red rock national park. Highly recommend!

Google
The amazing church in Sedona is situated on top of one of the incredible red rocks. There's parking all the way up the road if you're lucky enough. Otherwise you can park at the very bottom and ride up on a golf cart.

Yelp
Sedona, Awhhhhhh. I always tell people a story about Sedona. On the 7th day when God rested he said, "hold on I will be right back" and invented and stopped by for a visit to Sedona. lol Hard to match the amazing place called Sedona. This Chapel is alway on my "you gotta try to go to list" no matter what if any religious affiliation you have. The views are breathtaking. I see comments about parking. There was lots of parking last time I went and all times before. Maybe they restricted it more since it has never been an issue for me. I have heard Sedona has become very overcrowded lately. Still, if you have to wait to park I would still go. There is not really a lot to do in Sedona and the views are amazing for a person say, who is limited in hiking ability or disabled. Enjoy.

Yelp
A Sedona Gem and a must visit. There is a parking lot at the base of the mountain where you can take the iconic picture and also has golf carts coming down. The chapel was designed by Anshen and Allen architects and completed in 1956, an extruded cross is the foundation for the concept and it extends downward into the landscape. It was commissioned by a student of FLW so you know they cared about the architecture. There is a second parking lot closer to the chapel and handicap parking all the way up the mountain right next to the chapel. The curved walkway up is spectacular with grand views of the mountains and just as important to the experience as the chapel itself. I recommend walking up slowly and not rushing to the chapel. Inside, there are no restrooms and the space is pretty small. If you go downstairs they have a gift shop.

Yelp
This chapel is breathtakingly beautiful. To the man driving the white truck who told me to park where he was, as he was leaving--when I said no because I'd get honked at and my anxiety would make me pull off some Austin Powers moves--thank you! May you and your family be blessed for eternity. Not only did you guide me, but you also blocked oncoming traffic so no one would steal the spot, honk or rush me. You literally were heaven sent. This Chapel is popular, so I'd suggest getting there right when they open or closer to when they close. 2.3 miles took us 45 mins!! There is only a handful of parking in 3 sections that lead up to the chapel and it's one lane up and down! There was also police announcing to not park along the residential areas or you will get ticketed and towed. It was a hot mess on a Saturday around 1pm. It almost discouraged me from driving up, but be patient, once you reach the top, you'll definitely realize the worth.

Yelp
Amazing! Located in the Coconino Forest, a short drive off the Hwy 179, this chapel is a must see while in Sedona. Built within the red sandstone rock, the image of the cross on the outer wall can be seen from miles away. Take the winding road upward from the parking lot to the top of the hill where the chapel entrance is located. The view is awesome, overseeing the red mountainous rocks meeting the enormous back drop of the blue sky. Inside the chapel is an alter with several candles for lighting to remember loved ones and a giant sculpture of Jesus Christ on the cross. WOW. A gift shop is on the lower floor. The chapel was built in dedication of the Roman Catholic faith but this site can be appreciated by all. Such a moving and emotional experience.

Yelp
This amazing site has gotten VERY popular in the last decade or so. I remember coming here in 2017 and there was almost nobody at the Chapel, we parked right at the top of the hill! In fact, the whole of Sedona was so serene and mysterious. Fast forward to Summer 2024, and it's like everyone discovered Sedona and the Chapel of the Holy Cross. We could barely find parking, and had to walk up the windy road to the actual walkway up to the Chapel. I'm out of shape, it was hot and I had a toddler, so we hitched a ride with one of many of the young folks with golf carts offering rides up and down the hill. There were so many people in, and around the Chapel this time. Even with all that going on, it did not take away from the serenity of the interior of the Chapel. People were mostly respectful of the place and the people visiting.

Brianna R.

Yelp
Regardless of your religious affiliation, or lack thereof, this chapel is a must see. It's a marvelous example of modern architecture and has--in my opinion--some of the best views that Sedona can offer. We loved gathering around with some friendly strangers, mouths agape, and watching a brave soul scale the rocks surrounding the chapel. Our visit intersected with a live mass, but the volunteers were welcoming and allowed us to pop inside the chapel to light some candles and visit the gift shop downstairs.

Yelp
My family and I visited this beautiful chapel Sunday afternoon and had a wonderful time. We found parking near a trail entrance about half a mile from the chapel. We did need to walk uphill which wasn't a problem for us, but important to note if mobility is a concern. The parking lot can get dicey, but don't give up. Towards the very top there were tons of spots available. After walking up to the chapel we took in the spectacular view. Mountains in all directions. Inside the chapel is stunning with floor to ceiling windows that showcase the sky and mountains. In front of the window is a large statue of Jesus on the cross. It was beautiful. There are candles you can pay to light and pews for you to sit in if you'd like a moment of silence. Downstairs is a tiny gift shop filled with various items. We enjoyed our visit and recommend stopping g through if you are in town.

Cari A.

Yelp
Located in Sedona, this place is known to be one of the known vortex locations. There were many people who were parking along different parts of the road on the way to the chapel. If you drive further up, there are a few accessible parking spots at the top of the parking lot, but there is still a somewhat steep ramp which may make it challenging for people with mobility issues. Pros: -free! (Donations accepted in the chapel) -there is some seating at the top Cons: -n/a

Michael S.

Yelp
This small Catholic chapel is built on a rock in a residential neighborhood. There's a steep grade up to it. Convenient parking space is minimal, and there are no signs explaining that. So, drivers inch along the road, waiting for other drivers to leave and open spaces. Or, they leave their cars along the narrow, two lane road, at the precipice base--or some distance away--and hike up the steep incline. Once reaching the top you find some of the best views of Sedona and the Red Rocks region. Inside the chapel there's little in the small space. Out the large front window the view is sky. The rear window has a magnificent view of mammoth red rocks, but also the entering and exiting crowd. A roof-high statue of Christ on the cross occupies most of the front window. Floor footprints mark where the statue's face looks directly at you. The perplexing expression is neither compassionate nor loving, welcoming, condemning, or judgmental. It's more of surprise and a bit eerie. Sitting up front and to the sides allows you to enjoy A/C breezes and cool off from your exertion in the desert heat, and solemn rest before starting back down. Would I recommend a visit? Probably not unless you have an architectural, religious, or other compelling interest.

Yelp
Been here several timesad wanted to take my daughter's boyfriend here while visiting Sedona. The Chapel is built into the mountain and the views take your breath away. They are currently in the process of raising funds to remodel/refurbish the chapel. Walking up is to the chapel is a much smarter idea than driving as there are few parking spots and many tourists. However, it is extremely steep for those with walking limitations. A panoramic view of Sedona can be seen at the top, very beautiful.

Yelp
Chapel Of The Holy Cross is a chapel that sits atop a hill and is a favorite spot for tourists, like me, to visit. I am glad my wife talked me into driving here from Scottsdale, AZ. Gorgeous landscape surrounding the chapel. The history is interesting to read about. https://chapeloftheholycross.com/history The architecture is awe-inspiring. Must see!

Heidi A.

Yelp
Beautiful chapel. The parking is very chaotic, but I'm glad there were a lot of spots. Very thankful that there were golf carts shuttling people back and forth, that was very helpful. When you enter the chapel, although there's a lot of people, it has a very serene and calm atmosphere, which felt very good to my soul. The view from outside the chapel was breath taking no matter which way you looked at. The gift shop was fun to look around as well.

Vivienne C.

Yelp
Highly recommend coming here as your first stop in Sedona. Here are some of the reasons why: - Especially if you're driving in from Phoenix, you get to see all the beautiful Sedona "architecture" / rock formations along the way which gets you excited about the city. - Compared to other hikes in the area, this one is pretty short, only around 0.3 miles to the chapel so you can feel like you already accomplished something very early into your trip. - The views are something else as you can even see Cathedral Rocks from the Chapel. The limestone rock sitting on top of the valley of trees is stunning. - There's a lot of parking, you don't have to worry about not finding parking even when it is anticipated to have a lot of people. Definitely a must and easy-win visit when in Sedona.

Maureen J.

Yelp
We stopped by here while on our Sedona Trolley Tour. As a visitor, I recommend you take the Sedona Trolley Tour if you want to visit this place because it'll be more convenient in terms of time, driving, walking, and parking. This place has very pretty views! Inside you will see a huge Jesus and cross with areas to sit and pray. There are also items inside to look at. You can also light a candle for $1. There is a gift shop below, but I didn't visit it because of the crowd and time constraint.

Dang L.

Yelp
Beautiful and solemn the building stands out among the red rocks. Take the drive up and park where you can. I recommend getting there early. If you drive to the top there are only disability parking spots all at the top. It's a great view point.

Yelp

Ana T.

Yelp
This place has some of the most beautiful views in Sedona and not to be missed if you're in the area. Drive all the way closer to the entrance and find parking there. If you park at the bottom, it's a long walk and takes up a lot of energy. They were holding service inside inside the chapel. If you go downstairs, they have a gift shop.

Fannie H.

Yelp
Go visit! Its beautiful It's architecture It's peaceful Its views Its Vortex It's Sedona :-)

Judy S.

Yelp
Beautiful views! Highly recommend. Parking is tough - you can park further from the chapel but it's a bit of a walk. There is handicap parking at the lot closest to the chapel. It's a pretty short walk regardless to get to the chapel. There are some cool rock formations that you can see and the views are pretty spectacular.

Lauraine E.

Yelp
This is a must see when in Sedona! The church is lovely and there's plenty of parking. They have a great gift shop down the stairs-you need at least 20 minutes to browse they have so many items! Go early if you can, it'll be more peaceful and you can sit to admire the cross/church.

Melissa C.

Yelp
Very beautiful and spiritual. I would recommend as a must see in Sedona. You feel very blessed to see and be in the chapel.

Robyn P.

Yelp
Absolutely gorgeous Church, built into the red rocks of Sedona. This Church was built in the 1950's, but the exterior looks a lot newer. This is the number one attraction in Sedona, and is always crowded, according to our hotel concierge. She recommended we go early, but as it turned out, 1000 wasn't early enough . The parking lot is quite small and every place was taken, as well as along the adjacent road. We were still able to admire the beauty from the road in our car. Stunning architecture

Rick T.

Yelp
Get here early or risk coming back another time or day. Free golf cart shuttles will help out anyone looking to get to the entrance. I tipped the guy 4.00 bucks it was worth every penny. Beautiful inside lit a candle for a loved one.

Anfeca A.

Yelp
What an amazing and special place. Have visited a few times and there is always a sense of peace and calm when you sit in the chapel. When you are feeling lost I recommend you seek peace at this sanctuary

Mary C.

Yelp
The Chapel of the Holy Cross is just beautiful, It sits atop the red rocks in Sedona, Arizona. The chapel was commissioned by local rancher and sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude. The chapel is built on Coconino National Forest land which is just stunning. The drive is beautiful and when you get there you will be in heaven. You can get married there if you want. Check their website for details about that. They have a great giftshop both there and on line. If you are religious you will feel the hand of God, if not you will be amazed by the views and the building itself. They have wonderful art there which includes: God's Mercy: four silk hangings (Creation, Heavens, Earth, Life) Jacqueline Jackson, Sedona, Installed May, 2016, Our Lady of Mercy: Miguel Martinez, Taos, Installed, September 2016 and God's Mercy in His Son: James Muir, Sedona, corpus of the cross installed November 2016. The beautiful building itself stands out among the red rocks. Take the drive up and park where you can. I recommend getting there early. If you drive to the top there is, thankfully, disability parking spots. There is also parking below, but it is a walk, so keep going up and you may not have such a hike. This is definitely worth the trip. It is amazing how they built this. You will love it, as it is one of a kind.

Patti D.

Yelp
The views were beautiful and it was a blessing to pray in this chapel even though I'm not catholic. The gift shop was fun too!

Theodore U.

Yelp
Worth the stop. If you are passing through Sedona and don't have a whole lot of time, a stop at the Chapel is a great way to experience a quick view of Sedona. The parking is the most daunting part of your visit. There is very limited parking in the area. Arriving EARLY (before 10am) is best. However, they do have little golf carts that will give you a lift up to the chapel. Another FYI, there is no restroom at the chapel. There are a few portable restrooms at the bottom of the hill, and that's it. Once you get to the chapel, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Sedona area, with views of Bell Rock and Cathedral Rock. The chapel is also a gorgeous view on it's own. In the basement of the chapel is a gift shop, that has some very unique gifts. Definitely worth checking out. We spent about 30 minutes here, as we were just passing through Sedona. Managed to get great pictures that captured Sedona beautifully.

Courtney H.

Yelp
It was magical being here and so beautiful! We have gone time and time again just to see the views and take in the desert background. This is a must see if you're in the area! Parking can be a little crazy but they also have people on carts helping to get them from parking areas up to the church. It's breathtaking here and the church itself is surreal. Definitely our favorite stop

MaDonna W.

Yelp
If you have a chance to visit the Chapel of the Holy Cross in Sedona, it's quite extraordinary.. built into the side of the mountain inspired by frank Loyd Wright. It is a beautiful tiny stain glass chapel . It's like a little boutique chapel . You can walk up from the parking lot and wind yourself around to the top or you can take a little shuttle bus. On the bottom floor of the chapel is a very impressive gift shop with tons of Catholic and Christian gifts books, jewelry, candles, wall, plaques. The stained glass window in the front with my favorites, so beautiful as the light was hitting it .

Nicolette M.

Yelp
I've seen Sedona before, but apparently I was missing out because this was incredible. You can see it from a distance but there is nothing quite like seeing it from down the hill then walking up on it. Inside the chapel is like another world. I've always considered myself a spiritual person and you can feel it once you're inside. Definitely consider making the donation to light a candle, they even have different donation option ranges and different candles to light. Walk to the foot imprints on the floor and look up - just like they tell you to. Say some prayers and just let the place consume you. Outside offers beautiful views of the rest of Sedona. Definitely worth a visit, I'll be back!

Latisha V.

Yelp
I came here on vacation with my boyfriend. I advise you to get there early because parking is first come, first serve. Once you get here, the view is beautiful. Take lots of pictures because it is breathtaking. It does get crowded, but that is fine. When you go inside, PLEASE RESPECT the people that light the candles inside the church. Once you walk inside the church, it is beautiful. When you leave don't forget to visit the gift shop to the left of the church, you will see the stairs going underground. I highly recommend.

Matt V.

Yelp
A must go to church to visit while in Sedona, AZ! According to Architectural Digest, the Chapel of the Holy Cross is one of the ten Most Beautiful Churches in the World! And it is beautiful, built into the desert landscape of Sedona. A must see place. Visit and take the time to sit in the chapel and enjoy the quiet despite the people also there visiting with you. Parking is available but not plentiful and depending where you park the walk up to the chapel is anywhere from 0.5 to 0.3 miles. Or you can wait for the couple of golf carts that provide free rides up to and down from the chapel. The drivers have some good stories to tell. Do leave them a tip if you like.

Ron R.

Yelp
This is definitely worth the trip and hassle. Resist the urge to park in first spot you find. The climb in the elevation to the top is not fun. Keep driving to the top and you should end up with a good and close parking spot. The view and the chapel are beautiful.

Linda R.

Yelp
Visit the Chapel early to ensure you can find parking. The parking lot on the bottom of the hill has the best view of the chapel looking up, but there is a hike up the hill. For those who cannot walk, there were golf carts picking up visitors. The top of the hill has amazing views of Sedona. The Chapel is small, but mighty. The Crucified Christ is an amazing piece of work. Do not miss the relics on the altar. For visitors... please respect that this is an active church. Please be mindful of children and show reverence, humility, and recognition when you walk in. The gift shop below the Chapel is a treasure of Catholic gifts. Friendly and helpful staff. This Chapel is a must visit while in Sedona.

Fiorella M.

Yelp
Every single time I go to Sedona, I go here. I love sitting there and enjoying serenity inside, and the beautiful views outside. My dog himself was able to enjoy the views. It is worth it!

Charlie L.

Yelp
A peaceful stop in Sedona ... a magnificent sculpture of the cross inside. Built into the rocks becoming part of nature. An absolute must do when in AZ

Sara M.

Yelp
Chapel Of The Holy Cross is such a beautiful spot to see while in Sedona. They are open from 9am to 5pm daily. There is beautiful views all around and a nice walk up from the parking area. We did have to drive around a bit to get a spot but it wasn't too bad. It does get pretty busy so if you're looking for photo ops without people in it would be best to get there early. Definitely a beautiful must see spot!

Nami N.

Yelp
We visited most famous Chapel and built into the red rocks of Sedona AZ. I think this place is a very popular and it can be very busy during weekends and peak season. If you see parking spot, definitely take it. We were lucky to park near the Chapel. It's a few minutes on foot, but it's a slope. So just use the golf cart shuttle to pick you up. It is free, but tips are appreciated. We entered the Chapel and pray and meditate. So peaceful. There is a gift shop in thebasement. Don't miss it! Here you will see the breathtaking views of the Sedona red rocks.

Alakake K.

Yelp
A beautiful lovely place. Please visit, leave a donation and light a candle. Golf carts will even shuttle you up to the chapel and down to your parked vehicle.

Michael M.

Yelp
This gem is nestled in the Red Rock Moojtains of Sedona. It is an amazing and spiritual place with unique architecture and a wonderful, giant crucifix of Jesus. It is a very prayerful place, and it is a wonder to travel up the mountain to it. Golf cart shuttle rides are provided complimentary. The gift shop is also amazing. If you are Catholic, don't forget to fill a small vial of holy water from this shrine. A must see!

Renelle W.

Yelp
What an unusual beauty of a Catholic Church. Apparently, they don't actually offer mass at this location but it's a still a cute little church built within the Red Rocks, overlooking breathtaking views of Sedona. It's a tourist site that may take you 10mins. The basement is a little shop if you are interested in souvenirs. The biggest issue is parking...atrocious! You may want to find a parking at the side of the road and trek to the church. You may be lucky and arrive just in time as someone else in leaving the parking lot to scoop their spot, like I did. Also, the church is in walking distance to some of the many hiking trails in Sedona. You can actually start one of the trails from the parking lot!

Lynnann W.

Yelp
I'm Catholic and this moved me.... As you approach, there is a larger than life cross jutting out of the imposing red rock. Wow! The chapel was built in 1956 by a student of Frank Lloyd Wright named Marguerite Brunswig Staude. Note the "Rx" carved in the stone to the left of the cross?! How random?Well Marguerite's family made their riches as Pharmacists and thus she felt it was a sign to build here. Wind up a not to steep pathway, pass incredible vistas, a sweet water feature and beautiful Angel. Thereafter enter a stunning Chapel! The crucifix is ... special. There is a gift shop downstairs and quite unexpectedly large. Both Christian and secular gifts/souvenirs. It was a very special experience.

Olivia P.

Yelp
This place is so stunning! I brought my midwestern boyfriend here on a trip up to Sedona and made this a surprise pit stop. He is Catholic so I figured he would love it. About 10 minutes away you can start to see the cross and glass building. The parking scenario is indeed terrible but we lucked out finding some halfway up the hill. We went mid May so it was very hot outside, and the inside had no air conditioning. They have a gift shop downstairs that is absolutely STOCKED with anything Catholic/Christian/Sedona/Red rock. It's mainly a religious gift shop though, as it is a church!!! They also have prayer candles for you to pay for and light to make a prayer. Definitely carve out a couple minutes along the drive to northern arizona to stop at this gorgeous Church!

Lisa S.

Yelp
Beautiful sunny day to see this amazing structure in the most stunning environment. Parking can be busy so we ended up parking near the bottom of the hill and walked up. The church is so beautiful. The cross with Jesus is a stunning piece of art, especially with the windows behind it. The nature surrounding the church and how it's brought in through the architecture and design reminds one to be grateful for all the good in your life and how very small we are in this big amazing world. I was able to sit peacefully and say a little prayer during my visit. Definitely worth a stop.

Jeremy S.

Yelp
A must see! So cool, how do people do things that they do, amazing! You definitely should go if you're in the area. The church is beautiful and they have a gift shop downstairs with many things for purchase. The front is beautiful, how someone constructed this through rocks is just crazy cool! I recommend, you won't regret it!

Kimo J.

Yelp
We flew into Phoenix on Friday about Noon, stopped and had a great brunch at Matt's Big Breakfast then jumped on the road to Sedona. We expected to get stuck in some traffic heading north but it wasn't too bad at all. Since it was the first time to Sedona for J and I we wanted to hit some sights on the way to our hotel and one of them was the Chapel of the Holy Cross. As you make the turn from the freeway to the street heading up to the Chapel you see it on the hillside, absolutely beautiful view. When we arrived the 3 PM Friday Mass was still taking place so the 45 parking spots at the property were completely filled with numerous cars waiting also. We drove to the upper parking lot and did not find any spots available but when we were coming back down we lucked into getting a spot as someone was pulling out! Lucky for sure! We then walked up the steep road to the Chapel. Once we got up there the views from the landing area are breathtaking and the inside of the Chapel is as beautiful as the architecture. With the area being so crowded we sat outside while the Mass wrapped up. Many people brought items to be blessed after the Mass as well. After we sat inside for a bit we went downstairs to the gift shop where there are many commemorative items that can be purchased. I would definitely recommend a visit to the Chapel of the Holy Cross for anyone visiting Sedona. The architecture and views are beyond reproach. If you are interested in going to their Mass or having an item blessed plan to visit either Wednesday or Friday at 3 PM and remember parking is very limited so plan accordingly.

Yelp
Beautiful church - can you imagine if this was a place you had access to all the time?! It can definitely get packed, so the earlier you go the better in terms of parking and views. The church interior is quaint, but take some time in quiet reverence of the beautiful setting you find yourself in.

Yelp
This is worth the walk to see. Do be aware though that there us parking closer to the chapel. The view is beautiful.
