Char Restaurant

Came tonight for a birthday dinner with my husband. Had to ask for bread which should be served complimentary by default, though when it came it was warm and perfectly salty butter. Salad has wilted lettuce and is very tiny for a $7 add on. Steak was properly cooked on one side and overcooked on the other, though the flavor was AMAZING. Seafood add-ons were delicious (lump crab, shrimp, and scallop) but they were rather expensive for the portion size. Baked potato was not cooked thoroughly, nor was the broccolini. The asparagus and mushroom side was wonderful. First espresso martini was amazing, the second one had to be remade because it was wrong, but they fixed it. Dress code is not enforced- people were walking around in tennis shoes, jeans, hooded sweatshirts and even flip flops and pajama pants. Bread pudding was the worst we have ever had in our lives, incredibly burnt and overcooked. Pecan butter crisp was delicious. Hubby loved the salted caramel cheesecake. Server was lovely, knowledgeable, and honest. The manager was attentive and honest and gracious and took our comments in the best way possible. Would come back and try again for a hopefully smoother experience.

The food was amazing.The steak melted in your mouth. The salmon was made perfect. Are waitress was accurate courteous and kind.

Char is one of those Jackson staples, and since Jackson is my hometown, I was excited to stop in while I was home for Christmas. I came for lunch with my girlfriend and my mom, and overall the experience was just okay. My mom and I ordered the chopped steak with gravy. It wasn’t bad, but it also wasn’t anything to write home about, and the sides were pretty lacking in flavor. My girlfriend had the chicken sandwich—crispy and probably the best part of the meal. The sauce definitely helped and pulled it together. We started with the crab claws, but you could tell the grease was old, which was a big letdown. I won’t even get into the drinks. This isn’t my typical experience at Char, so I’m hoping it was just an off day. Service and atmosphere were fine, but the food quality didn’t match what I’ve had here before

We came to celebrate 🥳 our birthday 🎂 and it was wonderful. (I last visited there 2years ago. They had the oil lamp on the the table. This time they had regular lamps. I miss the the oil lamps)

This is a top of the line restaurant. White tablecloths and formal service. The grilled blackfish at lunch was excellent. The carmel cheesecake was outstanding with a fresh hot cup of coffee. Terrific service and an upscale atmosphere.

Honestly everything was on point. Photos won’t do justice because of the lighting but appetizers, salad, and steaks were great. Possibly the best filet and ribeye we’ve ever had.

One of the best dining experiences I've ever had! Flew in town for work and I always try to find a nice local, non-chain spot, saw the reviews so decided to try it and we were so impressed we came back a few days later with a larger group. Our server was so attentive and helpful we requested him personally for our return trip. Spoke with management on both visits (TJ and Zack were their names I think) and they were gracious and appreciative. From the classy atmosphere to the expertly made cocktails to the exquisite food and with dessert being the chef's kiss, this meal was not cheap and it was worth every penny! The fried green tomatoes are the TRUTH! If I am ever anywhere near Jackson again, I will be back! Note: Courtney is the absolute BEST server I've encountered... insist on being seated in his section!

Upon arriving, and despite having reservations, our party of 2 had to wait more than 20 minutes to be seated. When making our drink orders, the waiter had to come back two different times to inform me that the liquor that I ordered from their menu wasn't available. The third one I ordered was, thankfully. My wife ordered a red sangria, and it was clearly not sangria - just some fruit juice (pinkish) with some red wine poured in. We ordered crab cakes for the appetizer, and while they were almost exclusively crab meat as advertised, and they tasted good, they were unfortunately lukewarm at best. The wedge salad was good. For the entree, we ordered the tuna thinking it would be a tuna steak. Instead, it was about 6 tiny slices of tuna on top of lots of rice and stir fry, and it was not good tuna (which we frequently order elsewhere). The server, while not rude, wasn't the least bit helpful or attentive or personable. I had visited here about 10 years ago, and I had not returned due to a bad experience that time. I thought that with the passage of so much time that it was worth giving this place another shot. Needless to say, I won't be returning ever again.

Great food and atmosphere. Elizabeth was my server and she was absolutely lovely. We had the perfect experience because of her.

So we went to Char for my son n law's birthday dinner. Let get right into it. The Char salad with chicken was Amazing. The Salmon was Delish The burgers were devoured by the young. C- the auto gratuity should be banned. Will I go back, heck yes! ForRealFran

We always like this salad, but with spinach, not the mixed greens; today: the spinach had too much 'old' in it... you know, wilted & dark. And being a 'foodie' from NOLA, the fried chicken tenders were not tender, but chewey, even though they were cut across the grain... I wonder if some restaurants skimp on the quality of ingredients versus going up $.30 or whatever on the meal?

So we went for lunch this past Sunday. We did not have a reservation, which I cannot decide if I would call that stupid or brave. We did wait about 30 minutes for a table, which is not terrible at all. We were seated in the very far back room and we had a server named Coretta. She was very attentive, fast and knowledgeable. All of our food was wonderful. Considering how busy they were, our food came out very quickly and was cooked correctly and served hot.

Char never disappoints. Chad was our waiter and he made each selection a table favorite. he certainly went the extra mile to ensure our meal was just as we wanted. his suggestions ramped up our choices to the next level! the restaurant is always comfortable and clean. the large amount of booths make the seating just a bit more private which i appreciate. parking is front door but the parking lot is often full due to the popularity of the restaurant. make a reservation if you plan to come at a busier time.

Not impressed. The food was ordinary. We had takeout so I can't comment about the service. Did I mention that the food was ordinary? Our takeaway order was ready within 5 minutes of my arrival. Kudos for that. The food was ordinary. Ordinary food like this should be less expensive.

I went there for a company function, so we had a limited menu, but I did enjoy the beef filet/tenderloin which was very tasty. They have a full bar and a nice selection of wine. I would go back again.

First time eating here. Enjoyed our evening. Got a Cesar salad as an app, the cowboy boneeye which was a good size for splitting between the two of us, we also got an extra side of garlic mash potatoes. Our server was so nice and helpful. The steak was a bit charred (ironic). I didn't mind it as it was tender but my wife didn't love it so not sure how much we will frequent.

Came here with a reservation on a Saturday night. My sister just moved into town so I came down from California to visit her and wanted to take her on a nice dinner date. I found this spot on Yelp and it was def giving the vibes I was looking for. Got seated right away. Our server Amber was awesome. She had great energy and was very attentive and nice to us. She gave us her recommendations and was very knowledgeable of the menu. She provided the best customer service. Hands down! The host that night was also very nice & sweet. She complimented us on our way to be seated and I thought that was sweet of her. We started with apps. Crab fingers, sautéed and fried. I def liked the sautéed better than the fried. Fried green tomatoes were also good we loved the dipping sauce it came with. Complimented it really well! I had the scallops that were cooked to perfection. Absolutely loved them. My sister had the black fish which stole the show! It was so tender and flavorful. We also had the creamed spinach that were weren't a fan of but that was the only thing. My experience here was 10/10. I would highly recommend and will def be back! Also Amber you rock!!

I visited Char with my friends on Friday night! We sat in the bar area accompanied by the live pianist. The lighting is low and moody. We started off with cocktails and appetizers, which consisted of the Pamaritas, Espresso Martini, a cup the soup of the day (Shrimp bisque) and the Award-Winning Crab, Shrimp & Andouille Gumbo. Our cocktails were perfectly crafted. The cups of soups were hot and delicious. Our server also brought us bread service. For entrees, we ordered the chicken piccata with mashed sweet potatoes and sautéed spinach, redfish with a wedge salad, and the spinach crisp with chicken. Everything was really good. Absolutely no complaints. Overall, we enjoyed our dining experience and I look forward to going back in the future.

We tried this restaurant for dinner for the first time on Sunday evening. We didn't have any reservations but good thing, we only had to wait 10 minutes or so before we were seated. I do recommend making reservations though. We started with their soup of the day, which was chicken, asparagus and mushrooms and it was delicious. Perfect for a chilly night. I like how nice and big this place is from the inside and they have multiple locations - in Tennessee, here and Alabama. For entrees, we ordered their Range chicken and Atlantic salmon. Both were delicious. See photos of the food below. I loved their famous pecan pie with vanilla ice cream for dessert. You should try it! See photo of this dessert below. Overall I really like this restaurant and would come back.

One of my fav restaurants in Jackson, MS! Lunch is always great and bar has a great vibe. The menu variety is great with lots of great options to choose from. Service is always great and they are very personal and attentive. Crab cakes (all lump crab meat) and pecan crusted blackfish is so tasty!

What a wonder happening place. We stopped there after dinner somewhere else. We sat at the bar and had appetizers. We thoroughly enjoyed the piano player. He made the night Playing Stairway to Heaven and My Guitar Gently Weeps.

The food was great. I had the Range Chicken, Caesar salad, and cut brownie. This was my first time coming here. Our waiters were awesome. I enjoyed the soft quiet music.

Came here to try this restaurant out as we are considering booking a private room for our wedding rehearsal. Our waiter was kind, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic. Our table favorites were the sweet potato fries, blackfish, and blueberry bread pudding! Returning is a strong possibility for sure!

Definitely a 5\5!!!!! The service was absolutely great, our waiter JAKE WAS AMAZINGGGGGGGG we attended dinner after our friend graduated with her PhD! Attached is a picture of the range chicken I ordered... didnt get a picture of the spinach crisp but it was good!! Great environment, Great service, Great atmosphere!

Good service, good food, good prices, great location. Reservations fill up daily so be sure to book ahead. I'd say it leans more towards dressy than casual dining but I'm sure if you look appropriate for dinner, they don't turn you away. The little fried oysters were crunchy and delicious. Wish it came with a bit more corn. The Ahi Tuna Salad was prepared medium rare which is how I would recommend it. It's a large salad so you will most likely fill up. Veal was a smaller dish but with mouth watering bites of veal and crab lump meat smothered with a béarnaise sauce. Wish we had room for dessert because they looked tempting. I'd say it's been my favourite so far in Jackson.

The servers are horrible and the foods not prepped as it should be and as you requested, they're very un thankful for your business. you're better off to go to Madison and eat at one of the restaurants over there

I have eaten here two times. Once at lunch, and ordered the pecan crusted tenders and an array of sides. Sooo so very good. I also had dinner there recently and had the blackfish. It was also very good. I don't think anything at Char can go wrong!

This place is very racist, we spent $1,000 with a party of managers, an old white couple came in and said we were loud and they asked us to leave!! Yes we were a little loud laughing having fun, no one was vulgar!!!!! We will never ever ever visit this location again.. it's so sad!!! The manager on duty call my store managers trash!! Yes 2 of them got angry.. and yes I stand by my comment that all of this was racially motivated!! I have spent many thousands of dollars at this establishment having private meetings and this location will never have to worry about me coming back.

The Char Burger I ask for it med- well and was very well done and dry and coarse could barely chew they are using cheap beef for their burger. Had the soup shrimp bisque was good. The service was nice the ambiance was great.

Need to Improve quality of food for price. Tuna doesn't taste like tuna it is so overcooked. Will not be getting this again. Great service and lovely staff.

It has been almost 10 years since I last visited this restaurant. I am happy to report, it is still AWESOME!!! The food was exceptional in both presentation and flavor. Darwin (Server) was patient, professional, and his recommendations (Cocktails, Wines, Dishes) were DEFINITELY On-Point; especially the crab-stuffed Blackfish. We had a ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL Dining Experience!!!

Went on a Wednesday night by a recommendation of a local (again), and will be returning again. The first thing I noticed was a full parking lot. Always a good sign. The hostess was pleasant and seated me within a few seconds. My server Nicole, was happy, polite, and knowledgeable about the menu. I listened to her recommendations and went with the ribeye with shrimp and scallops and fried onions and a side salad. I ordered the ribeye cooked medium but should've went with medium rare or even rare, as what I got was slightly pink in the center but medium well around the edges. Don't be afraid to go rare, can always cook a few seconds longer. The steak had a béarnaise sauce and the fried onions added a little crunch to it. The two shrimp and single scallop were perfectly cooked which also came with a very decadent buttery cream dip. The ambiance was very sophisticated and I felt underdressed in my hockey jersey. Low lighting and candle on the table sets a great mood. I would love to come back to this restaurant when in town again. Thanks for a great meal Char!

Met a friend here for lunch while I was in town. Very nice ambiance. Our server was superfriendly and very helpful with recommendations. We ordered the beef short rib lunch special. Our food came about 5 mins after we placed our order but it wasn't very hot. (It was lukewarm probably because it was prepared for the lunch crowd.) It came with 2 sides and I chose macaroni and cheese and green beans. The short rib was very tender and flavorful. The sides were tasty as well. The potions were huge. I had enough left over for another meal. I was full but they have bite sized portions of dessert so I had a bite sized pie with ice cream. I also ordered a cup of gumbo to go which I had for lunch the next day and it was amazing. I must say I had a very nice dining experience at Char.

Food is very good. A big city steakhouse in Jackson MS. Wine list is good. You can find something in most price ranges. Jackson MS needs more places like this. Front bar is nice with the piano player, but when crowded the wood decor echos the sounds of the conversations so it becomes very loud I hope they put some sound dampening items in the room. Pictures with fabric or something in the ceiling. Excellent place. The owners will get this right. I'll be back!

Excellent food, service & ambiance The gumbo was very good ..... a large bowl with salad would be a perfect dinner. The salmon was very good however they should leave capers out of topping. Served over couscous was perfect Wonderful place to eat!

Nice meal here with my family and mother-in-law, who we were visiting. Service, wine list, and food are all high quality. The portions all were pretty large as well. We had dinner in a holiday weekend so the meal wasn't quick by any means but then again, my wife and her mom were chatting a lot and not focused on the menu to start. We got food quickly enough for my kid so that the wait didn't feel terrible. The dining rooms - tables, booths, bars - are all laid out well in their own ways. Both bars looked like fun times. Obviously the restaurant has a lot of history and the famous Mississippians' pictures were fun to view in the lobby.

Good food, great service and very affordable prices We went on a Sunday. The wait for brunch was 45 mins Fried chicken was very juicy and flavorful 5/5 You get a choice of 2 sides. Mac n cheese was good but nothing special. 3/5 Grits weren't very cheese I'd go with something else next time. 2/5 French toast was good 4.5/5 Blueberry pudding was good 3.5/5

Delicious food and great service! The filet was cooked perfectly, the baked potato was good, the wedge salad was delicious, and the bread was amazing! The brownie dessert and the cheesecake were also really good. I would definitely return! My only complaint is that the restaurant is pretty dark. I know that's intentional to create a specific atmosphere, but it's not really my cup of tea. It's dark enough that I did see several people need to use their phone flashlights to read the menu, so if that's not your thing, just know that's how it is going in. This was dinner time that I went, so likely lunch and brunch aren't as dark.

For several years Char has been our go to place for steak. Not anymore. The last two times we have been the food quality has changed. Ordered the Ribeye medium and it came out and looked like a thin sirloin cooked well done. Baked potato seemed like it was cooked days ago and re heated. Wife's filet looked like a 4 oz sirloin medallion. The pecan butter crunch came out frozen. It's a shame the food quality has gotten so bad.

Our server was horrible!! I can't tell you her name, because she didn't tell us, shoot we were there for almost 2 hours and only got appetizers, because we never saw her. Young white girl either dyed "red" hair. Another waitress went and got her for us after about 20 mins, and told the manager how bad the service was, well he just walked past our table and could care less. I love Char and have been well over 20 or more times, but you can bet if they ever sit me down and she walks up, they will move me.

Great portions and perfect subtle seasoning. I tried a few appetizers and the cauliflower was one of my favorites. The mozzarella tomato tower looks gooofy but is okay. Main dishes were wonderful. The whole 2 cocktails I ordered were both to strong. Felt like I was drinking everclear with some garnish. Couldn't even drink over a sip of the second one. They pre-added roughly 45 dollar tip as well which was strange. I always tip 25% but to be pre charged is just weird.

Char was a great experience overall. The water in Jackson was out, but they still managed to come through with plastic utensils and plates. They had the best port-o-potty I've ever used as well. We ordered the crab claws and gumbo as an appetizer and pecan crusted blackfish as entree. It was my first time having crab claws and I must say, they are amazing. The gumbo was good too, although it could have had more seafood and less sausage. The blackfish was solid. Great service and tasted amazing. I'd love to go back again soon.

I used to live in Jackson and frequently visit Char, wow it's taken a dive? I will never go again! Same. Level as an Outback at best !

Great ambience and very clean environment,. Wonderful fried crab claw appetizer. Waitress was very friendly and effective. Enjoyed the dinner and will definitely come back.

Our party of 6 had mixed feelings about Char(mostly because how does a restaurant run out of chicken at 6 pm on a Thursday night?), but overall I think it was someplace I'd go again. We ordered onion rings and the spinach crisp as appetizers. There was also fresh bread brought to the table. The spinach crisp was a great starter and I could have eaten the whole thing as a meal. The onion rings had a peppery coating that was tasty (which was good because they didn't come with any type of sauce). We ordered Old Fashioneds and I found them to be more bitter than smooth. For my main course I opted for two items from the starters menu: mozzarella tomato tower and no-filler crab cakes. It was the perfect size for a meal. The crab cakes were all crab and better than any I've had in a while. Delicate sauce on top and the pickled greens were a good contrast, if a little salty. This by itself was a great plate. The tower was really good too, and the French Vinaigrette and onions pulled it all together and was a nice switch from a balsamic glaze. My companions enjoyed their meals once the server came back and let them know all the things they had ordered were "out" (any kind of chicken and sweet potato fries). Tablemates had steaks (they looked amazing) and scallops (only 4 on the plate). For dessert, I ordered the blueberry bread pudding which was large and dense. I only ate about 1/3 because it was so filling. I also had a bite (or 2) of my friend's pecan pie and it was HEAVEN. I'd eat here again just for that! Service was attentive, despite not knowing what the kitchen was out of before we ordered, and friendly.

I have been coming to this restaurant in Jackson, MS for years and always had excellent service. I went to this restaurant on Saturday 11/23/24 at 11:00 am and didn't get anything to drink for approximately 20 min. After that I requested a refill 3 times and didn't get it. I went to the front to talk to a manager and let her know that I was leaving and wanted to pay for my cup of gumbo, side salad and ice tea and also about not getting my refills. She never apologize for the bad service and rang me up for what I ate. My main meal came out as I was getting ready to go and another waiter offer to box it up for me. I told the waiter thank you, but I was on my way to shop and the food would go bad. I understand things happen , but I was really upset that the manager didn't have enough of her to at least apologize.

Food was amazing; chef was accommodating for food restrictions. Our server Summer was outstanding. An overall great experience; highly recommended.

I was glad to have booked a large party table so quickly on a summer Saturday I have a few friends who know what "Pull up at Char" means but I smirked actually having pulled up... for dinner only, of course. I can see why Char's a popular spot in Jackson, just off Northside drive it shares proximity to a few other properly popular spots as well like Bravo!, Tuk Tuk and La Cour. Highland Village has for decades been a nest of popular retail and restaurants, tho. Char Jackson gives steakhouse vibes--maybe even more so than the Char closer to home--even with the same dark woods, checkered floor near the bar, and reddish interior walls. Maybe it was the lighting. For apps, most of the table was high on the fried crab claws, but for me the chili fried oysters were really the thing to talk about. Perfectly crispy,with a hint of chili and cumin... and quickly devour-able. It's a small app --unlike the crab claws--so that might have some effect on its popularity. Across the table there were porkchops, scallops, a highly recommended free range bird, and redfish but I saw Mahi and thought "it's a summer fish" A nice presentation, I would have preferred my mahi with a little more searing but... all and all a good fish. The grits edged more toward polenta--drier than most grits this far South--but the asparagus and lump crab were both perfect, like the oyster app. The cocktail list is where Char would do well to be a little more adventurous. Although most of the names sounded good, both the Apricot.l sœur And the black orchid lacked balance. The apricot sour wasn't stout enough nor fruity enough--just sweet. The black orchid's orange vodka really added no base to the crème de violette or peach bitters. Don't get me wrong, it's a good idea...Just didn't pop. In fact, I'm going home to make my own with a brandy or bourbon base. But not to fear, the wine list is more than adequate for all but the most finicky guests. Lots of reds, whites and rosé to match most of the dinner menu. Food: 3¼/5 - solid fare all around but maybe lacking a WOW factor in a few key spots Atmosphere: 4/5 - gas lamps and deep reds Service: 4¼/5 - prompt, personable and cheerful X-Factor - 3/5 - definitely brings JxN up a level but..

My favorite go to are the fried green tomatoes and crab claws. The weekly specials are always nice.

My Wife ordered and surprised me with the crab claws I've been craving. We moved to Ca 9yrs ago and I see them on my timeline all the time. She paid with tip $38.00 for my plate. Being Disappointed is Definitely an Understatement. I was really looking forward to enjoying them. We will Never be back and it's not because we don't give second chances. It's because when you require your patrons to spend so much on an order, your mistakes should be minimum. Just look at what she paid $38 for.

Dined at Char a couple of weeks ago. We're seated next to a rowdy group of 12-14 celebrating a birthday. As the night went on, the louder and more obnoxious they became. It was not until our food was served that the server offered to move us. Then the manager came over, but we were eating and didn't want to move after all that time. Food was average and service terrible. Manager obviously oblivious to activities in restaurant and really didn't care. Terrible customer service. We travel to Jackson often, but won't be returning to this restaurant.

This was one of the most buttery steaks. I have eaten in a long time, it looked dry, but when I cut into it, all the delicious juices started flowing onto the plate. The ambience is very nice and the individual at the bar was absolutely polite even though he was busy running around all over the place I recommend this and I'm glad I didn't go to Logans roadhouse. :)

The service was amazing and the food was delicious it was perfect for date night. The food arrived quickly and it was piping hot,20/10 would recommend!!!!

I have had many memorable experiences at char until today. I tried the fried chicken over grits. As always I cut up my food & mix together before eating. About 1/3 thru my lunch I had something hard in my mouth. I spit out what was in my mouth & it was end of an eaten fried crab claw. I informed waiter & asked to speak with a manager. He was very nice as was I & manager was relieved that I don't have a shell fish allergy. The food was taken away without the offer to make me something else. Said manager came back with a gift card hoping I would come back & comped my meal. I have waiter $10 in cash as a tip & started walking away & waiter told me that I had to pay for my gumbo & drink because only main dish was removed from my check. I asked for my $10 back & gave waiter my gift card & asked if it covered my drink & gumbo & he said yes. Never again will I go back. You put something that someone has already eaten in my "fresh prepared" meal & I am not offered a replacement meal only credited for meal I barley ate & have to pay for a cup of gumbo & my drink. Look closely at top right in picture. Disgusting

Beautiful! I visited from Baton Rouge for a concert and dinner date. I made reservations a month in advance on Open Table. We arrived for 6pm. It was fairly packed with several Prom attendees on dates. We were seated in a back room section. There was a large banquet room that guest were going in. The had to pass through our section which caused it to be busy. Our waiter was a nice gentleman. The food was fantastic. We had fried crab fingers to start. They were nice and tasty! I had blackened redfish with added lump crab and a side of steamed broccoli. It was very good. Now for the winner, my husband had the Blackfish stuffed with a crab mixture. This was amazing! Fish cooked and seasoned just right! We ended with the waiter suggested Butter Crunch! This was very sweet but pretty good overall! We will definitely return.
