We hadn't been to the hotel in many years and decided to revisit it as it was handy to where we were. The surroundings haven't changed in many years and look very dated. We went to the bar, which was very quiet. The barman was very friendly and helpful. The pate was very nice but unusually, served in a bowl and served with a packet of butter. The main course was delicious and well-cooked.

We were visiting family nearby and needed a base for the week. I'm very glad that we chanced upon the Charlemont Arms when researching on-line. We stayed for 6 nights in total and ate evening meals on four of them. The food was excellent, and of very generous proportions - my wife couldn't eat all of her roast dinner on one occasion purely because of the quantity. Some reviews on here have criticised the breakfasts. Pay them no attention. Every morning the cooked breakfast was well cooked, fresh and hot. There were also cereals, toast, yoghurt and fruit juices to choose from.|All of the staff that we had dealings with were friendly, courteous and helpful. There were one or two minor items in our room that needed some attention, but nothing to detract from our enjoyment of the hospitality. |Like others, I would have no hesitation in staying here again.

We went here yesterday for a meal. We were seated promptly, and our order taken. The place was very busy so we expected some delays. 45 minutes later, and while other people around us were getting served, we still didn't even have our starter. Staff passing in and out could clearly see we were still waiting, but no one thought to check. They didn't come to the table to clear empty glasses or to offer more drinks etc. We finally got someone's attention and asked, and it turns out our order wasn't even placed. No apologises offered. The starter was finally delivered nearly 1 hour later as we were about to leave, still no apology or explanation was given. Food was OK but nothing special. Very disappointed in the staff services, granted it was a busy weekend, they did have ample staff on but they were not proactive with their engagement with the customer, unless the customer actually went out of their way to track them down. Other people around us were also complaining and taking it amongst themselves to search for menus, missing cutlery and trying to get staff to take orders or get drinks. Very disappointing experience.

I'm so surprised by some of these reviews. I'm originally from Armagh and return occasionally to link up with friends. I wouldn't stay anywhere else but the Charlemont Arms. I've stayed at the City hotel before and found it cold, uninviting, poor food, and casual attitude to guests.||By contrast, the Charlemont Arms is a family run hotel. The two lady managers are wonderful. Friendly, warm, and so helpful. I've seen them suffer extreme rudeness from some clients and respond calmly and professionally.||The food is not Michelin star, but it is homely, well prepared and presented.||The staff are friendly, efficient, and very helpful. Nothing is too much trouble. There are some small repairs being taken care of - after all it is the oldest hotel in the heart of this lovely city.||My room was beautifully updated, gorgeous bathroom, pristine, and a wonderfully hot, strong shower.||Don't heed some of the poorer reviews. It has never been my experience

Lovely family-run hotel. Great location for exploring Armagh. Rooms were spotlessly clean and plenty of space. We'll be back next time we're in Armagh for certain.

1||I can’t recommend this Hotel. Very bad service. Breakfast a joke. I had a fry for breakfast. The soda was deep fried . ||The service for the christening, and the food was a joke. The cocktail sausages not cooked properly. Chicken strips over cooked and the sandwiches stone cold.||Table service a joke from a rude manager and slow staff waiting 30 plus minutes for a few cups. ||I didn’t get to sleep. As there was machinery or someone on all night. ||I would not recommend this Hotel

Had lovely meal but it took so long to arrive! I was the only person in the bar having food! Food was really good but came with no apology for long wait. When I tried to voice my complaint to the receptionist she was so rude and even walked away without even taking my complaint on board. Have never before met such bad manners from hospitality staff. Will not return and advise anyone else to visit City Hotel! Absolutely disappointed!!!

The hotel is decent to stay in although it smells quite bad in the corridors. Our problem staying here was that the service was so bad. I asked for scissors and they started laughing at me saying that they didn’t have any after that when we came back to the hotel at around 23:00 the woman in reception didn’t believe we were staying at the hotel and asked for our room number which we gave to her only to come up to our room (a few flights of stairs as the elevator doesn’t work) and she had deactivated our room card??? We didn’t really understand their behavior and felt so un welcomed.. the employees in this hotel have serious attitude and just make you feel so unwelcome.

Yelp
This is about the bar food. My wife and I have stayed here a few times and we recalled that the bar food was fairly ok. So we went here and both of us had battered fish one with champ (mashed potatoes with spring onions) and one with chips (£8.50). Both were served with a smear of mushy peas and a small salad. The cod was superb, it was fresh and a good portion with a lovely light crisp batter. The mash was pretty good and while the chips were ok I suspect they are pre made and bought in. Really home made would have added a star. We had beer and a sparkling water. The service was ace and we had comfy seating. It's important to remember the price here as it's good value; I've been charged as much and sometimes more in a takeaway. Another tip; battered cod and chips with fino sherry is amazing. Try it sometime.

Yelp
Am I being filmed??? This was my first impression of this place, surely it was a setting for a remake of Fawlty towers.... Like nowhere else I have been (in this life, when i was a 1920s burlesque dancer in my previous life I would have frequented places like this all the time) Where can I begin, its a higgledy piggaldy mish mash of rooms added on to other rooms, hidden staircases, faux doors and a dizzying arrangement of floral patterns. Everywhere. I really mean everywhere, I cant imagine WHERE anyone would go during the last half century to get floral dinner ware. Food is like a seaside bed and breakfast, luke warm and miserable, service slow and not overly friendly. I would usually recommend this sort of place to Grannies and Granddads, but it doesn't even make it near the quality of a place that i would bring somebody i liked. Not to be repeated or recommended

Yelp
Spent two nights here. The room was good, though weirdly large for its furnishings, and the carpet was getting a bit ragged. Lovely view past the car park and razor wire to the bus station. The service was friendly and exceptionally helpful though, and the full breakfast was good. It's located very conveniently, close to both cathedrals, the Mall, and other attractions.

Yelp
I've never stayed in the Charlemont Hotel but have visited it numerous times over the years for drinks and food. It's a small hotel with a quiet atmosphere. The menu is possibly a tad old fashioned however I've always enjoyed any meal I've had here. The nachos, garlic mushrooms and garlic potatoes are delicious if you just want a snack or a few bowls of food to share with friends over drinks. I'm also always impressed with their wine - having tried glasses of Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio I've found it always excellent quality, which isn't the case with a lot of hotel bars. However if you visit Charlemont you really should try their downstairs Turners Bistro restaurant which is very different to the rest of the hotel. It's much more modern in atmosphere and serves scrumptious food which is 5 star quality. I've eaten in it a few times and always love it - they do an awesome vegetable crumble and the wine selection is great. A highlight is the Gourmet Night - I have been to one (Italian themed - however each night is themed differently) but do plan to go to many more as I had the most amazing night. Five courses of truly outstanding food and accompanying wines - absolutely scrumptious. A beautiful night (very reasonably priced) and the service was impeccable. Better food than I've had in many other cities around the world. Can't praise this place enough - the people of Armagh are extremely lucky to have this gem of a restaurant! So in fairness I'd probably rate Charlemont Hotel a 4 but Turners Bistro is a definite 5 stars for me.

Yelp
I ate here twice; lunch (downstairs) and Dinner (upstairs). Both meals were great. The downstairs offers up pretty good pub food, while upstairs offers a wide variety of meals. Although when I look at their menu now, I don't see my favorite pub meal. They used to have Irish bacon stuffed with stuffing, and a ton of gravy on top. It was outstanding.

Yelp
Stayed only one nite but service was very good..staff very nice and helpful.parking lot small but secure..Dinner was very nice..Only down side the brickfeast in the morning seemed a bit grease. But this wouldnt put me off staying another nite there.
