Charles Darwin Research Station

The Charles Darwin Research Center is a must-visit in Puerto Ayora. Entrance is free, though donations are encouraged, and there’s a small gift shop where purchases support the research center. We bought a few items to help the program. The place is very clean, well organized, and full of interesting information about the Galápagos ecosystems and conservation work. For $10 per person you can also hire a guide who will take you to see the giant tortoises. It’s an easy and pleasant walk from the main street in downtown Puerto Ayora. Definitely worth stopping by.

A great trail, mostly in the shade, with turtles of all ages and sizes. The center does great work in conserving turtles. The walk through the complex is a nice distance. You can also walk through to the water or a nearby dock.

Informative, albeit small museum. Yes you can see the giant tortoises for free. Turn left after the museum and walk up. Do not take another left as that is the area you need to pay to access. The people will stop you on the street and try to force/ guilt you into to make a $10 purchase claiming it’s the only way to see them. That’s false and a money making strategy. Say no and continue walking. Enjoy the museum and the exhibitions and then after the entrance turn left and continue up for about 2 minutes. On your right you have a building and between the walking way there’s a whale skeleton hanging up you can walk under. Continue on for another minute and there’s a small room showing a video and some shell collections on your left and then another 30seconds you have the enclosure to see these amazing animals

This is not only a good place for your turistic interest, but critical for the conservation of the habitats and species of the island. You can visit the breeding center as well as some interesting museums. You need to pay for a knowledgeable guide which only costs $10 and supports the fantastic work of this organization. In the breeding center you can see up close some of the most iconic tortoises of the islands, as well as some hatchlings that are simply very cute. Recommended for those who seek more than cheap entertainment and are interested in the history, biology and ecology of these beautiful islands.

We paid $10 per person and got a guide along with other people. Our guide spoke good English, he kept switching between English and Spanish. It is a bit of a walk from the guide station to the center. You get some good information about the research activities and programs. It is not bad, but it can be a richer experience. Of course the best thing is seeing the saddleback turtles, which we have not seen ourselves in the wild.

It’s worth noting that while the Charles Darwin Research Center is free to enter, if you’d like to see the giant tortoises up close, there is a $10 fee per person and you must go with a guide. Fortunately, guides are easy to find as you begin the walk up, with several local operators offering their services. The guided visit is well worth it—we learned a great deal about the different tortoise species found on the various islands, how their unique shells and sizes have adapted to their environments, and the ongoing conservation projects to restore their populations. The Center also provides insight into the challenges of invasive species, habitat loss, and the careful breeding programs that help ensure these peaceful, long-living creatures will thrive for generations to come. One of the most memorable parts of the visit is seeing Lonesome George, the most famous tortoise in the Galápagos. For decades, George was the last known individual of his subspecies from Pinta Island and became a worldwide symbol of conservation. Although he passed away in 2012, his remains are preserved and displayed at the Center, offering a powerful reminder of the fragility of island ecosystems and the importance of protecting them. Beyond the tortoise enclosures, the Center’s surrounding beaches are fascinating in their own right. These coastal areas serve as important breeding grounds for marine iguanas, and depending on the season, you can spot them basking on the rocks or nesting in the sand. The beaches also attract a variety of seabirds, crabs, and lizards, making the walk itself a chance to encounter Galápagos wildlife up close. It’s both an educational and memorable stop, blending conservation with natural beauty.

You can access the beaches and parts of the research station for free. To see the turtles and lonesome George you'll need a guide for 10$ per person. Note that the turtles are in a cage and not roaming freely. This is more like a zoo and there are better places on the island to see adult turtles. Another thing that I found strange is that they position lonesome George as a symbol of hope. How an animal that was the last of its species and died without children can be a symbol of hope is beyond me. Even the guide didn't manage to explain this 😅

The guides are really passionate about what they know and they are so generous in sharing! I got to differentiate between species of land tortoises today. It's cool how there are dome shaped and saddleback ones! And they are all evolutionary different! Also got to know a haunting piece of history. Seamen kept hundreds on tortoises upside down on boats for up to a year for fresh meat. 🥲🥲🥲🥲
