The 21 Best Things to Do in Charleston

"Why Uber when you can take a bike taxi? They're an open-air way of being chauffeured from Point A to Point B, with unobstructed views of the city. We can all agree that fewer cars on the road are a good thing. Less noise, less pollution, quieter streets. Ten years ago, there weren’t that many pedicabs in Charleston. Now there are three companies. We like this one because of its professionalism, polish, promptness, and easy-to-spot telltale yellow cabs. You can flag one down, or call to be picked up." - Allston McCrady

Charleston Bike Taxi — Tour Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Zoom out. What’s the big picture here? Why Uber when you can take a bike taxi? They're an open-air way of being chauffeured from Point A to Point B, with unobstructed views of the city. We can all agree that fewer cars on the road are a good thing. Less noise, less pollution, quieter streets. Ten years ago, there weren’t that many pedicabs in Charleston. Now there are three companies. We like this one because of its professionalism, polish, promptness, and easy-to-spot telltale yellow cabs. You can flag one down, or call to be picked up. How are the guides? All pedalers are intimately familiar with the city. They live here. So they can recommend places to visit, stores to check out, and especially where to eat (bikers burn a lot of calories; they love food by necessity). There are about fifty riders on call for this company, including college students, history teachers, real estate agents, M.B.A. students, or those prepping for med school. What they all have in common is a love for exercise, sunshine, and their city. They also shout-out as safe “designated drivers” for the late-night bar crowd. Anything you’ll be remembering weeks or months or years from now? My brother-in-law visiting from New Orleans orchestrated a family ride-along. An elderly matron was chauffeured by pedicab, while the younger generations tailed her on individual bicycles and rode along beside (when there was no traffic), an inclusive way to “bike” as a group. Anything else to keep in mind? Pedicabs seat a maximum of three people; if you’re traveling in a larger group, just book a few cabs to ride in unison. The price is $6 per person for a ten-minute trip, with a $10 minimum. You can get picked up at your hotel and taken to any destination. Or book a cab for an extended shopping spree: your rider will take you from store to store, wait outside, and watch your bags. If you have mobility issues, riders can help give you a boost up or a lift down. Sometimes bike taxis are hired by the elderly or those tired of walking, to “shadow” a walking tour they have paid for. Bottom line: Bike taxis are great for everyone. Even locals enjoy a ride, rediscovering their own city at a bike’s pace without having to concentrate on traffic or worry about parking. Just remember that taxis are not licensed tour guides, so do not hire them with that expectation." - Allston McCrady

Google
Bryce was an INCREDIBLE Bike Taxi driver! We were a no-nonsense trio of moms in town for a quick getaway. He knew exactly the places we wanted to see (even if we only knew them off of Instagram!) and offered quick stops along the way to bend to whatever whim we had! He was the the BEST photographer too! When we come back, we hope to be able to book another ride with Bryce!

Google
Best tour in town!!! Isaac, Jamie and Darby were amazing! They shared so many interesting historical facts and commentary about the city and architecture. We loved being able to see in all Five zones of Charleston during our ride. Our group ages ranged from 3 to 70+ and everyone had a great time! We would love to go on the tour again!!

Google
Ifyou’re looking for the best pedicab experience in Charleston, look no further than Jamie! From the moment we hopped on, Jamie made our ride an absolute joy. Not only is he incredibly knowledgeable about the city’s history, but he also has a great sense of humor and an easygoing personality that made the trip even more enjoyable. Jamie took us through some beautiful scenic routes, pointing out hidden gems and sharing fun facts we wouldn’t have known otherwise. He was also super accommodating, making sure we were comfortable the whole time. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing ride or a fun, lively tour, Jamie is your go-to guy. Highly recommend taking a ride with him—you won’t regret it! Five stars all the way! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Google
Wow! Took a bike tour with Jamie and had a blast!! He loves his city and gives a fabulous tour. Being on a bike let us cover so much more ground. It was great to see each district and hear the history of the majestic homes. So grateful we met Jamie and saw Charleston through his native eyes!!

Google
My husband and I were visiting Charleston from Traverse City Michigan and used Charleston Bike Taxi twice and we were thrilled with each experience. We had Bryant and Collin who were both friendly, funny and knowledgeable about the city. An easy and convenient way to get around Charleston and a good value! We would definitely recommend this company and these two young many!!

Google
Our uber got “lost” and just as we were able to call another ride we saw a bike taxi! It turned out to be such a fun experience! Thank you for rescuing us! 🤣

Google
Jamie gave us a tour of the historic area of Charleston. He was very informative and helpful. He grew up in the area. I highly recommend this company and specifically ask for Jamie.

Yelp
Called to request a CHS Bike Taxi pickup at my home and couldn't have been more satisfied with the quick response and friendly service.

Yelp
This was a lovely way to see a lot of Charleston, without having to walk (my mom is mobility impaired). Being in the open, we were able to see much more than can be seen from a car or even one of the horse-drawn carriages. Sam was our rider/driver, and he was great. He was very friendly, and he chose a lovely, varied route. I highly recommend riding with him! (Advice: wear a hat or bring a small parasol/umbrella -- that's what my mom and I did and it made the ride very comfortable.)

Yelp
These guys made our trip so memorable. We ventured outside of our walking distance from our hotel and had a lovely tour of Charleston. These guys work rain or shine and always with a smile.

Yelp
Loved our ride with Wesley. He took us around the beautiful homes to the water front and back to our apartment. It took about 1.5 hours and was so enjoyable. Wesley even stopped so we could buy a few things at the convenience store. Highly recommend Wesley as your driver. We also stopped to get some photo ops

Yelp
Jeff was awesome! His strong legs got us to where we wanted to go & his vast knowledge of the city was super helpful! Jeff is the best pedaler we've had yet! Thanks for making our time in Charleston so amazing! Thanks, Jeff! Danielle

Yelp
Had my first experience with them yesterday. My friend and I loved it. Super efficient service. Bikers are friendly. We had Alex and Ricky (hopefully, there are not a bunch of them), but they were very amiable during the entire experience. What a fun way to get around downtown!

Yelp
Never again. Double the price of the blue one. They took advantage of us since we had been drinking. Middle Of the day and looking for money. Never again GO BLUE.

Yelp
This was my first time taking a pedicab, not just in Charleston but anywhere. Usually I'm someone who prefers to walk, but it was a hot summer afternoon in August and I knew my boyfriend could use a break. It was perfect timing that just as we walked out of the city market, a pedicab pulled up right in front of us. The driver was friendly and got us to our destination quickly. It was actually kind of neat to get a view of rainbow row from the street. At $15, the ride was a bit on the pricey side, but I get that the drivers are working hard so that we can be lazy. It's not something I'd do frequently, but I'm happy that pedicabs are around if we need them, and I'd use Charleston Bike Taxi again on the right occasion.

Yelp
The first two days of using the bike taxi service, we had excellent experiences. On the last day of our trip, we had called to be picked up and someone said they would send someone to our location. Twenty minutes had gone by and not a single bike had drove by. We had called back, asking for another ride, when the operator was nothing but rude, stating that one of the drivers had showed up to our location and had waited but we weren't there. He said he would send someone, but we ended up just getting up and walking to our location due to the rudeness on the phone.

Yelp
We love this idea! Phil was our bike taxi driver and he was great! We rode through the College of Charleston and he told us personal stories of his time there. Our ride was enjoyable, scenic, but he was also cautious of our time. We will absolute use this service again when we visit the city. Such a fun way to get around!

Yelp
Our experience with the Charleston Bike Taxi was AWESOME! My cousin and I needed a ride and Angelo was an absolute pleasure to ride with!! He was professional and charming and gave us lots of insight to the city! We definitely recommend this service... ask for Angelo!

Yelp
Arriving in Charleston I noticed everyone riding bikes! Outside of our hotel were bike taxi's that provided an alternative greener mode of transportation. I thought this was a very cool concept and since Charleston is relatively flat, it made sense to have this available for tourist! Way better than a horse and carriage! Oh and Bike Taxi...thank you for providing lots of nice eye candy as I walked around Charleston. That alone would have gotten me to pay an additional $5-$10 to get on one of those things! :)

Yelp
The cowboy song goes...save a horse...ride a cowboy...but in Charleston...the song would be save your feet...ride a bike taxi. The Battery...and the surrounding area is a town built 100's of years ago, so in this day and age it gets congested on the weekends.......really congested. So while spending a weekend down there recently I inquired about a cab to travel about 15 blocks....probably a mile or so to an art showing going on and was told that getting a cab would take a long while due to the traffic. BUT............a bike taxi would be here very quick and get us to our destination in no time flat.....so we got one. Jesse was our driver and he was engaging and did well in the small talk department. He even took us through some interesting back alleys. Arriving at our destination, he suggested we take a card....we didn't and regretted it later as we could have used him to get back to the hotel without having to walk back...so folks....take the card....as these guys don't drive all over the place down there...if you are off the beaten path having their number is a life saver. They call themselves a "Pedicab, Rickshaw service and can also provide advertising services on their taxis and even wedding service????? Wedding service? Really.....seriously? So next time you need to get around in Chucktown....think about Charleston Bike Taxi.

Yelp
Fantastic service. Great price. Jackson has taken us around a couple of times. Plan to call on him many more times while we are in Charleston. I recommend Charleston Bike Taxi to anyone visiting Charleston.

Yelp
I don't take horse and carriage rides because I think its cruel so instead I opted for a hot boy to pull 3 of us in one of these little bike taxis. I asked him if he could pull 3 people even though it was a 2 seater. He said yes without even flinching. He took us from High Cotton to Kaminsky's in like 2 minutes. By foot it would have taken 10 maybe 15 minutes. The guy who pulled us around was named Eric and his direct # is: (843)991-1566. If you are feeling lazy, call Eric. It's fun especially if you have a little buzz.

Yelp
We were visiting Charleston for the day and booked a carriage tour as well as the harbor tour to see the most we could in the short time we had. At one point in the day we found ourselves at White Point Gardens and needed to find a way to get to the maritime center for the harbor tour. It was a bit too far to walk in the time we had, so we gave the Bike Taxi service a try. Call the phone number from their card which I picked up earlier in the day and they confirmed they would send someone right away. We had the privilege of riding with Carlo who was friendly and polite. He got us there with time to spare with great conversation thrown in. It added another nice experience to our day of sightseeing. Thank you!

Yelp
Great service. Lots of bike taxis around. The drivers are very friendly--mostly college kids. They work hard without complaining or haranguing you for tips. What was really impressive was that we called for a bike taxi from Liberty Square and got one quickly. Nice job! This is a great way to get around Charleston.

Yelp
The first night we were in Charleston we walked... Please... if you are in Charleston, even if you like walking (like I do) do yourself a favor and call Bike Taxi for a ride back to your hotel. Our second night after eating and drinking and reveling in oysters... we called a bike taxi driver we had stopped to chat with on the roadside... this was so much better. Dick, our driver, was friendly and we arrived at home still happy instead of sweaty and tired. you can call dispatch or just hail one like a regular cab.

Yelp
I have a bad back and knee and my son and I were in town to see the Citadel. We wanted an easy dinner at Subway the night before returning home. Tried to walk the mile each way and ended up hailing a bike taxi. The driver was a college-age girl. She took us to Subway, and took the most direct route, cutting through bank parking lots and narrow streets in the historical area. She waited for us and I would suggest this as the ONLY way to get around on the weekend once you are within 2 miles of the tip of Charleston and the Battery/Ocean. Suggestion: if you see one or use one during the day, get their business card and make a reservation for later in the evening if you need a ride to dinner etc. You will see them everywhere on the weekend so plan ahead if you can. I would prefer siteseeing this way to the horse-drawn carriages of 20 any day. Perfect on a warm, night - fresh air and a quick trip. It was great fun!!

Yelp
Today we rode though Charleston for the first time and met Jaime. My husband and I had an amazing experience with him! He was a local that explained more of the history then the normal tours. We highly recommend bike taxi and asking for Jamie!

Tori K.

Yelp
Jaime and Pierce were fabulous! It was a hot day and my kids were tired of walking. So, after a cold beverage, we called the bike taxi for a ride to the battery and back just to see the sites from the comfort of a ride. Not only did we enjoy a lovely breeze, but we had several questions that they were able to knowledgeably answer. We come to Charleston frequently and I can't believe we have never done this. Highly recommend!

Yelp
We had multiple excellent experiences with the Charleston Bike Taxi. They seem to be located in significant numbers in busy areas, which is very convenient. The prices were quite reasonable- usually around $5 per person for a trip to wherever you needed to go. We found a "driver" we liked a lot the first time we needed a bike taxi- and then were able to call and have him drive us the rest of the times we needed someone by requesting him- very convenient. My favorite experience was riding around in the battery- the houses were just beautiful and it was a great trip. I would highly recommend this company for your transportation needs in the Charleston area.

Yelp
I had been visiting Charleston with my husband for the week of Valentine's Day and after a long night out on the town, we run into Nate who provided a great ride back to our hotel. We wanted a nice ride and even though the city was full of traffic (due to the debate downtown) he took us down by the water and was very personable and fun to talk to the entire time. MUCH smoother ride than you may think. When arriving back to the hotel, my husband and I agreed that we couldn't have finished the night off better than with a ride with Bike Taxi. For my first time in Charleston, I would highly recommend riding Charleston Bike Taxi

Yelp
My husband and I decided we wanted ice cream about 8:30 last night. We're in Charleston celebrating our 26th anniversary and are having a great time. Once we stepped out of our hotel courtyard we were kind of looking around and up pulls a cutie pie named Joshua on one of the bike taxis. I hadn't even noticed these guys around before he popped up. We really didn't know where we were going and Josh offered to pop us over to Ben and Jerry's about a 1/4 mile away. He made the trip a little longer by taking S Market around to N Market (or was it the other way around?) but it was quite enjoyable and he was engaging enough to keep me smiling. He gave us his card and I took a pic of the phone number, just in case. My hips are killing me this morning, not because of the bike ride, but because I didn't know one was available and I spent all day yesterday walking all through town. This mode of transportation is a wonderful way to get around the downtown area. You're not stuck in the back of a cab or dealing with traffic yourself and it's a slow and leisurely way to get around. Hey Josh, I'm going to call you while we're here!

Yelp
HORRIBLE company. Called multiple times to try to report an incident in which I was injured during a ride due to negligence by the driver and never received a call back from any sort of manager/ supervisor like I requested. If you want to take a bike around the city, I would call Rickshaw instead.

Yelp
Nic is so sweet. The Oak steakhouse called their company and he took us a few miles to cocktail club. We got his card and when we were ready he was back in 10 min. Gave us recommendations for lunch tomorrow! Definitely recommend

Yelp
We called and requested a pedi cab at our hotel for a walk we considered a bit too long in the humidity and were sent Andy. He was chatty and very friendly, giving us his card when we got to the bar. We called him again later that evening for our ride home and he was still in a great mood despite the heat! We needed a stop at a convenience store and he took us to one he knew of nearby and waited while we shopped. He made out pedi-cab experience a great one in Charleston!

K H.

Yelp
We left the Edmonton House, called and got a pedicab in 5 mins. Katie was timely and very sweet.

Jeffrey H.

Yelp
Was truly impressed with their level of service after having a bad experience with a different company earlier in the day. I am starting at college of charleston and was in town with my parents for the first time this past weekend; being from Austin we are used to taking bike taxis. The yellow bikes are the way to go, we called and were picked up in under 5 minutes several times over the weekend. I wished we would have tried them first; took over 15 minutes and 3 calls to get one from a different company and that long haired, mouth breather didn't even know where our inn was located and acted as if that was our fault. The yellow drivers were very professional, engaging and had some great suggestions for restaurants/ things to do.

Yelp
It never dawned on me to actually write a review for the Bike Taxi service offered in Charleston! We used this fun service one evening after walking the entire city and me crying over wearing the wrong shoes! Our bike driver was really nice and recommended a great spot for us to get dessert (Kaminsky's). Most of the drivers look like college kids--wish I had that kind of job when I was in college! This is a very safe and "green" form of transportation in Charleston.

Shelby G.

Yelp
We came across Jaime and ask for a ride back to our hotel, after a FULL day of walking Charleston. I am so glad in many of ways that Jaime was our driver, he was so kind, and safe, once we arrived at our hotel we asked if he would be willing to come back and take us to dinner. We also asked him for recommendations if the places we were interested in didn't have availability. This weekend in Charleston is SEWE , so it is VERY busy, and every place we checked was full. Jaime communicated with me and recommended a wonderful place, called Muse, he called ahead and had a table reserved at our desired time, came picked us up and dropped us off. We texted him when we were ready and he timed it perfectly to pick us up and take us back to our hotel . Jaime also rounded up an additional driver for our friends. What a great, very friendly guy! I will recommend Jaime to anyone I know visiting Charleston and when we are back, I will definitely be texting him for transportation!! This bike cab service as a gem of an employee in Jaime! Ask for Jaime... you will be glad you did.

Yelp
Great ride, very enjoyable considerin Im a fatass. The ole lady loves it too for a nice beginning's commute to an enjoyable #Dickens dinner, but not before a stop for some raw bar shots at #Pearlz. Expensive trip but worth the extra 5 bucks.
