We visited Chart House in Dana Point last Thursday to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We didn’t have a reservation, so we expected a bit of a wait, and it turned out to be about 45 minutes. Honestly, the wait was worth it. While waiting, we enjoyed the beautiful surroundings—the restaurant overlooks the marina, and the view is stunning, especially as the sun starts to set. Once seated, we were immediately struck by how cozy yet elegant the atmosphere felt. The staff was friendly and attentive without being overbearing, which made our anniversary dinner feel special. The food lived up to the setting—fresh, flavorful, and well-prepared. Every dish we tried was delicious and served promptly once we were seated. Parking was easy thanks to the valet service, which takes both cash and card. It’s a small convenience that makes the visit even smoother, especially in a busy marina area. Overall, Chart House Dana Point delivered a memorable evening for a special occasion. Between the gorgeous marina views, great food, and comfortable ambiance, it’s a place we would definitely return to—next time, probably with a reservation to skip the wait!

We had a wonderful dinner at Chart House located in Dana Point. The view was absolutely beautiful, and everyone was so nice. Our server was amazing—too bad I forgot his name! Chart House is highly recommended—if you’re visiting Dana Point, you should definitely check out this amazing restaurant with delicious food. It was the perfect place to celebrate our 10-year wedding anniversary. Thank God we found this restaurant. We had an amazing experience on Friday, June 20, 2025, at 7 PM.

Happy hour is Monday thru Friday 4 - 6pm. Arrive early if you want a spot on the patio. Luckily we snagged the last table. Jose, our server, was excellent. Food was very good and a great value. Beautiful views!

We were in a party of 6 around 5:30pm on 7/12/25, let me say the dinner was Excellent, Tops and plating was gorgeous. Our waiter was Delightful and very courteous, gave us great entree suggestions to. The Veiw is simply Stunning. Our problem with the night was the " Valet " service around 6:30 pm, these two guys were Impatient, Disrespectful and not Welcoming at all, with Tip and Fee there was " Absolutely No Thank You" at all, we had two cars and this should be addressed by Management, we will return and these two guys are there we will say something. Thank you again for such a Delicious dinner and great service minus the Valet guys .

Google
Views: spectacular Service: below average. Super slow. You'll be waiting over an hour for your food and receive little attention. Your service may depend on your ethnicity. Mahi: way below average. It's basically fish jerky. It was so dry and hard that a knife won't even cut it. Filet mignon: we sent it back bc it was overcooked. Prime rib: average Lamb chops: above average. Drinks: average, doesn't taste good but looks fancy. Lava cake: get this!!!! It was delicious 10/10 Oysters: ok Parking: there is paid valet but we found free street parking and walked a few mins. Overall, the view and the restaurant was so beautiful. We were prepared for mediocre food. We were disappointed by service. So it evens out and I'd say it was an ok experience for the price. I would give 3.5 starts but that's not an option here.

Happy hour at the bar, great value. Arrived after 4pm and most tables were full by bar area. Had great service, quick and friendly. Get the Kim Chee calamari, it’s the best we have ever had. Umami flavor with the Kim chee sauce (not really spicy) also has plenty of veggies that have a delicious and delicate light crunchy batter. Prime sliders, 3 for $12 are a must. Good portion of beef and great flavor.

Google
Great spot with a beautiful view and ambiance. Lamb chops were a bit on the fattier/aged side, sauce was great. AC kept blowing directly on us, and the vents couldn't be turned, temp set way too low, so double check before sitting down if sensitive.

We had dinner at the Chart House in Dana Point and our experience was the best! Our server Natasha was engaging and very attentive. She loved answering our questions and made our evening so much better! The views are spectacular. We went just before sunset and enjoyed the changing view as the sun set. I am recommending this restaurant to my family and friends. Even though we live in San Diego north county, it is worth the 45 minute drive. Thank you Natasha and Chart House for capping off our evening perfectly!

Yelp
They did a whole birthday menu and celebration for me! It was really nice and the server was also very kind. Definitely a good vibe and great for pictures!

Yelp
Came here with my girlfriend for our six month anniversary. I made dinner reservations on their website for 5:30 on a Saturday. Valet Parking is $9 and convenient. The spiral staircase down from the lot to the restaurant is iconic. While I was hoping for a window booth, all were filled and we were seated at a slightly elevated rear booth. There was a little confusion with who would be serving us. Our initial server was wonderful, but shortly advised that she would be handing us off to another. The second server came across as new or less capable. To our original server's credit, she checked on us regularly and advised if we needed anything to flag her down. She gratefully took pictures of us and made sure our special evening was truly memorable. The food was excellent. Crab cake for appetizer, black cod for my girlfriend, filet mignon for me and a nice ice cream dessert to celebrate our anniversary. The sweet brown bread is always great and we both complimented our meal with a glass of wine. While not entirely a smooth night, it was still special for us. Thanks to the wonderful food and our original server (my apologies for not remembering her name).

Yelp
We went for the view. In my reservation, I wrote, "Celebrating my girlfriend's birthday, so a nice table/view would be greatly appreciated." It was clear this was a woman requesting a table for her and her girlfriend. What followed felt discriminatory. We were seated at the worst table in the restaurant, the only one facing a wall instead of the bay or ocean. Our server was kind (the one positive part), but when we asked to move, she said to talk to the host. I politely explained, "It's my partner's birthday, and we came here for the view, but we're seated facing a wall. We see several open tables." The host replied, without empathy, "It'll be an hour and a half to two hours." That was it. We finished our $25 espresso martinis (below average) and an appetizer, then left. Why stay and spend hundreds more for that kind of treatment? The strict dress code made things worse. It bans shorts and "baggy clothing," so I had to scramble to find something to wear as a lesbian uncomfortable in feminine clothes- only to see a white man nearby in a graphic T-shirt and shorts. The double standard was frustrating and hurtful. We left feeling unwelcome, dismissed, and disappointed. I rarely write reviews, but this was disheartening enough to share. We just wanted a special night for my girlfriend's birthday and instead were made to feel out of place. Oh, and no need for Chart House to come in and comment that you "appreciate the feedback" or "thank us for choosing your restaurant." Address your blatant disrespect toward minorities instead.

Yelp
The Chart House has some of the best views in OC! It sits on the top of the hill overlooking the Dana Point Harbor. I love the ability to sit on the patio and enjoy the gorgeous views. Also, you can enjoy happy hour from 4pm - 6pm and they have some great choices. Today we got a glass of wine, iced tea, artichoke dip, lettuce wraps and fries for all less than $40! Our server was fantastic as well. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I feel this place has stepped it up. Have come here off and on over the years. We had an excellent dinner, great service and view. My husband had the halibut cooked perfectly and I had the lobster. Creamed spinach and sizzling mushroom sides. The prices wer reasonable given the portions. Had a great evening.

Yelp
The main entrance starts at the top of the restaurant, working your way down into the dining area via a narrow spiral staircase. Designed with curvilinear lines, the building embraces natural movement as one moves from space to space. The main dining room feels open and communal; its booths are nestled along the edge and flanked by thick angled concrete walls. Each booth has their own spectacular view of Dana Point Harbor and neighboring coastal communities further south. The vibe is rebellious elegance: bold, unconventional, yet familiarly classy. THE FOOD. - Bread Basket (Complimentary) | Fresh sweet brown bread, dinner roll, and crackers. - Half Dozen Oysters Rockefeller | Warm with diced (sweet) red peppers and melted cheese contrasted by oceanic flavors. It sounds odd, but it feels right. - Prime Rib (10 oz.) | Thinner cut, but still marbled and very flavorful with au jus added. The creamy horseradish is mild with a hint of peppery spice. Mashed potatoes are creamy with little chunks of potato. The carrot is deliciously cooked to a crisp, chip-like texture. Recommend trying this dish out. - Caesar Salad | Shaved Parmesan, crunchy croutons, and creamy Caesar dressing tossed in. The flavors complimented each other without overpowering. - Creamed Spinach | Rich and velvety with crumbled croutons on top. - Lava Cake | Chocolate oozes out after cutting into it! Vanilla ice cream creates a cooling contrast from the cake. So deliciously decadent. THE DRINKS DRINKS. - Mango Mojito | Seemed to be more sour and less mango-flavored. - Black Cherry Mojito | Beautifully balanced cocktail. Sweet black cherry flavor with a tangy edge and refreshing finish. - Zuccardi Serie A Malbec ('23 Mendoza Argentina) | Fruity, sweet, and slightly smoky. The finish is smooth. THE PARKING. Valet parking is $8. There's street parking, but read the signs to make sure you can park there. THE RETURN. Loved the vibe! Looking forward to coming back and trying their Alaskan cod!

Yelp
Found this place while on anniversary trip. Happy hour is where it is at! We spent like $48 on 4 delicious apps and 2 drinks. And the view is priceless. It was a bit of a luck of the draw on getting a table... but we got one by the window and it was legit. Eden was really sweet and welcoming. Ok the lettuce wraps are a. MUST! The peanut sauce should be bottled. The sliders and fries were good and the coconut shrimp were a bit of a miss. But again, for the price it was amazing! They were "fancy" but there were a few missing technicalities... the bussers were a little less professional and the heaters were disheveled and blocking the views. those are both just observations that didn't impact my want to go back. Honestly the worst part was hoping to get a table for happy hour.... we got lucky! We will be back for lettuce wraps for sure!

Yelp
Had reservations for 6 pm but we still had to wait a bit when we got there. Service was friendly but I had to vocally ask for water refills. Calamari appetizer was large portion & delicious. My husband's clam chowder was good. I had the spiced ahi which was simply okay. It lacked flavor. I've had much better elsewhere. The lava cake was just okay as well. Bergamot Fizz drink (I think) was different but good. If I find myself in Dana point again, I probably wouldn't return. The views are amazing, but food is subpar..

Yelp
The best server ever, thanks to Evelyn, who is always smiling and very friendly, a very passionate person. The best server in the world

Yelp
I visited Chart House in Dana Point for my mom's birthday. It was raining & gloomy so we couldn't see much of the view, but I still enjoyed the balcony area. I liked the spacious interior & circular structure of the restaurant. We got the calamari to share with the table & I got the coconut crunchy shrimp as my entree. My main was great, but I cannot stop thinking about the calamari--that was delicious. Will be visiting again!

Yelp
We come here every 6 months or so. And this time was excellent as always. Great views. Great food. Today my parents my wife and I shared many different meals together from the prime rib to black cod to the kimchi calamari. Our server heather was exceptional and gave some of best ever! Give her a raise !! Can't wait to come back again.

Yelp
What a beautiful place. We had dinner last night, looking out to the Harbor, beautiful scenery, and Beautiful restaurant. The architecture is really unique. The staff is very friendly, both the valet and those working in the restaurant! Our server was very attentive, and super friendly. Took good care of us while we ate there. Our food was delicious. My drink was very good too. I would definitely come back when in town.

Yelp
We saw the chart house in a different light... First off, we really were into the March madness playoff So we snuggled in at the bar front and center .. Marcos, our" super waiter" took care of us for the next 2 1/2 hours... what a great experience. It was a perfect evening we started with fresh oysters on the half shell from Washington followed by the seared Aji tuna so delicious. Had a little cocktail then we had some of their meatballs with ricotta cheese ... we brought our own wine and it was only a $25 corkage fee which we thought was, we finished our evening off with the perfectly prepared Chilean Seabass with fresh garlic, mashed potatoes, and root vegetables. All around stellar meal .

Yelp
My husband and I always enjoy coming to The Chart House. We enjoyed a drink and appetizer in the bar before dinner. Our server Jose was amazing ! So attentive and he definitely made us feel welcome. Our coconut shrimp and lettuce wrap appetizers were perfect before our dinner. Our dinner choices tonight were prime rib cooked to perfection and the macadamia nut crusted chicken which was just okay since it was not crispy. The views of Dana Point Harbor and the ambience of the Chart House are beautiful and makes for a nice evening out.

Yelp
Okay, the good and the bad of our evening at the Chart House. It was my birthday dinner, because that's usually when you splurge on an expensive steak dinner. We were seated in a hole of a table with no view in a hallway in between the main dining room and the kitchen. It was basically the wait staff highway. Not great but I didn't speak up for a better table because I didn't want to be cold outside on rickety folding chairs, so fine. The really not good part was one of our party ordered roasted chicken. It arrived cold. Not that it sat a bit, but solid cold, right out of the walk-in refrigerator, cold. I have never seen this happen at any restaurant ever. I get that it's a seafood and steak restaurant and there's one chicken dish for that one picky patron but wow! $35 for nuked chicken they forgot to nuke. So, we sent it back and the waiter was appropriately mortified but then it took another 45 mins to grill a NY strip for my guest. We ate, then he ate. The whole time sitting at a table where we could smell all the kitchen smells and now I was really taking heat from my son for not speaking up for a better table. So, all-in-all the worst birthday in recent history. On the plus side, my prime rib was spot-on perfect. And I wish I could come back because it was so good and I love prime rib. But, that whole evening isn't going to fade anytime soon.

Yelp
I arrived here with my family for dinner. My Mom had made a reservation in advanced. She was actually very surprised she was able to get one. Once she saw there was a table open she booked it. Parking here is valet only and the valet was super nice and friendly. The atmosphere here really is stunning, as you walk in from the parking lot you can see the beautiful view of Dana Point Harbor. It was sunset when we arrived which made it even more stunning. As you walk into the doors you go down a flight of spiral stairs and are greeted promptly by the hosts. We were shown to our table quickly. We were seated at a booth with the lovely view I mentioned before. Our server was Tony, who was super sweet, conversational and accommodating. Service was great throughout our dinner. I started with my drink the Faux-jito which was super refreshing and had just the right amount of sweetness. For our appetizer we shared the Kimchi Calamari. The batter was very tempura like and it also came with julienned zucchini, red pepper and sweet potato. There was no actual kimchi though so it kinda felt a bit misleading. For my meal I ordered from the "Chart Your Choice" menu. I started with the Lobster Bisque followed with the Savory Shrimp Pasta and finally the Mini Lava cake for dessert. My Lobster Bisque was creamy and had a very generous amount of tender lobster. My shrimp pasta, however was just alright. I was a bit disappointed as it was not very flavorful and my pappardelle pasta fell apart very easily. I also tried my Mom's filet mignon with chimichurri butter and that was tender and flavorful. My dessert was amazing. The lava cake was warm and rich with a generous amount of ice cream. I also loved the toffee pieces and chocolate sauce on top. Tony was nice enough to get a picture of my family and I outside at the end of the dinner with the sparkling boy lights in the background. We had a really great dinner and I would definitely come back, but I'd order a different entree.

Yelp
It had been a long time since I was here. I decided to take my 21 year old for dinner and a legal drink. The ambiance was amazing! Service was great and food was good!

Yelp
The restaurant is actually really beautiful but a little bit different in layout than most. We sat at the bar because we went for happy hour. I believe they have happy hour in their bar and patio, but it was freezing outside. We were lucky to snag bar seats as the restaurant was packed during happy hour. The happy hour menu has great drink specials. The food specials look great, until you get the food. The spinach artichoke dip was just spinach and cheese and not tasty at all. The truffle fries were fine. The firecracker shrimp had no flavor and were tiny shrimps. The coconut shrimp was the best dish. The prime rib sliders were OK. We ordered lettuce wraps, but they never came. 30 minutes later than we were told that they ran out. I wouldn't come back for happy hour, but would consider going back for regular dinner to try it out because the restaurant was packed.

Yelp
Love me a chart house :)!!! Views were beautiful and food was good. Lost a star due to the parking situation. You really have no choice but to valet. They have plenty of parking, underground but choose to charge people 9 dollars for valet (even though the website says 8). It's just kind of annoying. Our service was great though and honestly one of the best lava cakes I have ever had! (There's nuts in it)
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
As always, service here is excellent; this time provided by Glen. Another great conversationalist as well as being very attentive. Manager Jason sat and talked with us a few minutes so we were able to get to know him (thank you for your service, sir). We had the new whipped ricotta + meatballs, with the three basic meats for a bolognese and a great tomato sauce. We also had lettuce wraps, crispy coconut shrimp and firecracker shrimp, all of which are fairly standard for us. With the outstanding views of Dana Point Harbor and sunsets, this is a room that is hard to top.

Yelp
IMPECCABLE VIEW. This is definitely the spot to choose, meeting up with family or friends or whatnot. Like it is high-up on the mountain, looking over the pier... you can JUST FEEL the wind brushing against your cheek, can't you? ALSOOO--the food was way above its standards for fine dining. Yes, the plates may be pricy, but just me--you are getting your money's worth. I got their chopped salad with salmon. Best filet I have ever ordered at a restaurant. The crispiness of the edges meet the buttery middle and your taste buds are just screaming MORE. DONT GET ME STARTED ON THAT LAVA CAKE EITHERRR. My aunt got their Caesar salad and it came in a Parmesan crisp bowl, which was such a pleasant surprise! My uncle ordered their plates (he gave me the mini lava cake and probably it was a mistake because HE MISSED OUTTT). He was thoroughly-impressed with their ribeye steak so it's all goooood. For drinks, they both ordered their fruity martinis and I got their mocktail with ginger--definitely worth it because it tasted better than any cocktail from a fine-dining restaurant I have gone too! Our waitress was just the sweetest too! Fabulous and speedy service--above and beyond, really (pun intended hehe).

Yelp
Food: 8/10 Kim Chee Calamari - I don't know why they spelled kimchi wrong but that's literally what it's called on the menu... LOL This calamari was very saucy! I liked it. It has a mixture of onions and bell peppers. Oddly enough, it didn't come with a lemon--so I had to use the lemons I had requested for my water to add some acidity to the dish. 10/10 Prime Rib 18 oz - OOOO this was a huge piece of meat! I loved every single bite of this too. It was delicious! It also came with two different sauces- au jus and horseradish. I only used the au jus sauce since I'm not particularly a huge fan of horseradish. 10/10 Filet Mignon - Every single slice of this meat was like tasting a bite of heaven! The meat was so buttery and smooth. 10/10 Service: Immaculate. Especially on Valentine's Day.

Yelp
We have been dining at this Chart House for 50 years. It's usually our go to place for our special dates. This last visit was to celebrate our 54th anniversary. Our relationship goes deep with the Chart House. The one in Waikiki is owned by one of the 2 founders of CH, and we last visited him there 3 years ago. If there is one thing they need to bring back, it's the salad bar. It was the best one anywhere for years, and missed by all of the old timers.

Caroline D.

Yelp
Last time we came to the chart house was 10 years ago when we first met. We heard the food had gone downhill so we haven't been motivated to return. We decided to visit for our 9th anniversary. The $55 prime rib set meal was delicious and totally worth the price. The views are stunning as always and with the warmer evenings we had a wonderful time outside at night. Service is great, but nothing super special.

Yelp
Haven't been to this location and loved it. Love how it's perched on the hill overlooking the marina. Great service, a little slow but when he did help us it was excellent. I got the course with soup (clam chowder), salmon, and lava cake. Everything was delicious. The clam chowder had lots of clams, the salmon was seasoned to perfection, and the lava cake was a-mazing!

Yelp
Great view and location. Nice ambience inside and very spacious. Most tables have a nice view. There's also a grass patio area in the back - perfect for photos! Oysters were delicious. Carbonara was great, but not as rich or thick as a traditional carbonara - something I actually appreciated. Lava cake to end was a great choice. This is a good spot for an occasion!

Yelp
It was worth the try but a pass on revisiting... Pros: our server was excellent! So warm and inviting, kind and attentive. I don't remember her name but she had short hair and glasses. The drinks! My espresso martini was delicious, I didn't get the soufflé (advertised on their menu) one because that seemed very unnecessary, but the normal one was yummy! Also the romance rose wine was really good! Neutral: I made a reservation and arrived a few minutes early. You have to valet your car so we ubered there since we were drinking. I checked in when we got there and headed to the bar for a drink, as soon as we ordered it our table was called.... It was kinda hectic (since we were called 15 minutes early) so as quickly paid for the drinks and went to the table. We had an obstruction view because of a private party happening outside. I'm not a seafood fan so I did not eat the appetizers, my husband enjoyed them. Coconut shrimp and some type of avocado stack with fish. Cons: I tried to order the meatballs for myself but was informed they were sold out, at 745pm, kinda annoying since it seemed pretty early still for something to not be available. I ordered a Caesar salad with chicken. The salad had concepts of dressing, maybe 1/4 tsp actually made it to the salad. It was served in a cheese shell which again, concept was not great. The cheese shell felt like something I shouldn't be chewing on and kinda turned me off. The chicken on the salad was just a plain piece of grilled chicken, nothing to write home about.. I also ordered mashed potatoes for the table which were, just mashed potatoes. Nothing fancy. The Lava cake... the menu says to order 30 minutes ahead of time and it's a popular item. Was the lava supposed to be there? We got the cake maybe 5 minutes after ordering and it tasted like it was frozen and then quickly heated up. No chocolate inside, very dry. I love lava cakes and usually order it when I see it on a menu but this was disappointing and should really be called chocolate cake instead.... Everything was something I could have made at home, nothing blew me away to warrant a premium price point. I get it's right by the water, but it lacked a wow factor.

Yelp
Located on top of the hill I have to admit the view is stunning. The food was on point and they have a great selection of drinks as well. If you are looking for a relaxing time by yourself or even for a romantic date then this is the place to be. I recommend checking it out if you're in the area.

Yelp
An absolute mess. I should have listened to the bad reviews. Made reservations for Mother's day and called in advance to ask about the pre fix menu, they told us a large amount of options for appetizers, few entrees and three desserts for ~$80 pp. Seeing how the options were a lot we decided to reserve. We get there and we notice the appetizers they read to us are all +$20 in addition to the pre fix cost we were lead to, so that was very misleading and false advertisement. The items that were included were a basic salad and soups. We finally decide on the salad as the soups sounded lackluster and we are told they are out of lettuce! (7:30 pm on mother's day.. they obviously mis-planned) after 45 mins they take our drink orders. After another 40 mins we received said drinks. 30 mins later they take our food orders ( 2 hr seating limit) Our filet mignon was good but the Halibut fish was more dry than a chicken breast cooked for 2 days, we could hardly swallow without a drink. The mango rice bread it was served on top of was stale and bland.. I hate wasting food but that was the first inedible item I received at a restaurant. We get to dessert and the key lime pie was undoubtedly straight out of a frozen super market box, and a chunk was missing.. I planned this dinner to treat my mom and it was a disaster and embarrassing. Good thing the view was nice or I doubt this place would stay open with this kind of food and service. TLDR: waste of money, false advertising of menu options, bad management and ridiculously slow service

Yelp
Went to chart house for dinner again. Always a great place to eat as far as the view. The food is good. Seems like they rush you thru your dinner. Regardless it was good. $9 parking fee.

Yelp
We recently hosted a large private event at Chart House Dana Point. In the months leading up to it, we visited twice for dinner to get a feel for the space and the food. Both of those visits were positive, and they gave us confidence that the location would be a good fit. When the day of our event arrived, everything came together exactly as planned. The room was set the way we had requested, the tables were ready for our guests, and the view of the harbor and ocean created the kind of setting we were hoping for. Melissa, the Sales and Events Coordinator, deserves specific recognition. She was involved from start to finish and her attention to detail showed at every stage. She explained the menu options thoroughly and worked with us on adjustments for guests with special dietary needs. She handled contracts and payments in a straightforward way using secure electronic signatures, and she provided clear confirmations each time so we never had to wonder where things stood. She also asked questions we had not thought about ourselves, which gave us confidence that nothing would be overlooked. On the day of the event, Melissa seemed to be everywhere at once, though never in a way that drew attention. One moment she was checking that the décor and signage looked exactly right, the next she was coordinating with the kitchen, and later she was quietly smoothing out small details before anyone noticed them. What really stood out was how she didn't stay on the sidelines as a coordinator. Instead, she blended in with the serving staff, carrying trays and delivering plates herself. By putting herself right in the middle of the action, she saw the event exactly as our guests were experiencing it and could make adjustments in real time. It was a smart move that gave her a complete view of the room and allowed her to keep everything running flawlessly. To our guests, the entire event appeared effortless, but we knew it was her presence and attention that made it that way. The staff who supported the event were equally professional. Servers were attentive and consistent, clearing plates and refilling drinks without interrupting conversations. Bartenders were efficient and friendly, and everything about the service felt well coordinated. Several guests commented to us afterward about how well cared for they felt, which reflects directly on the staff who worked that day. The food was very good. Portions were generous, dishes were prepared as expected, and everything was delivered consistently. Guests with dietary needs had their meals handled carefully, and they specifically mentioned how much they appreciated that their food was given the same thought and quality as everyone else's. I know this location has some mixed reviews online, with comments about service or food inconsistency. That was not our experience. What we saw was careful planning, clear communication, and a team that delivered exactly what was promised. Our event ran smoothly from beginning to end, and our guests left with positive impressions of both the food and the service. If the level of attention and professionalism we experienced is carried through consistently, it shows that Chart House Dana Point has all the pieces in place to deliver excellent events and meals. What we saw was the restaurant operating at its best, and it left us with a very positive impression of what this location can achieve.

Yelp
Have not been to the Chart House in a long time, but was not disappointed when we went last night! Had a nice server, Jose. He was new and I think still learning the ropes, but a very nice guy. We really enjoyed everything! I feel like within the local community, this place has a bad rap when it comes to the food. Everyone in our party thought the food was absolutely delicious! Everything came out in a timely manner. The "chart your course" is a great way to go. Includes a soup or salad, entrée, and dessert. My husband got this and I thought the soup was very good. I had his dessert and that was amazing!! The views always made this place very special. Overall, five star experience. I would recommend it and we will be back.

Yelp
Stopped by here and got myself the calamari to start and ended with some of their glazed black cod. The calamari was decent, decent flavor but too many veggies if ima be honest, breading was solid on it. The Cod had a dark soy type of flavor and was real light, pretty decent as well. Overall for the price I'm sure there are a lot cheaper option's elsewhere but the food wasn't bad. Calamari: 6.9 Cod: 7.2

Yelp
We've looked at trying Chart House a few times but in reality every time I looked at the reviews it changed our minds. Finally made it there last night and were pleasantly surprised by the food quality. Service was excellent and the atmosphere is beautiful. We ordered the three course meal with prime rib entree, my meat was a bit hard and chewy but my husband's was melt in your mouth tender. For appetizer My husband got the lobster bisque soup and loved it. I got the chopped salad and the dressing was more on the sweet side which I didn't love but still OK. The dessert is the chocolate lava cake and it was delicious. If my prime rib was like my husband's it would have been a 5 star rating. Overall a very pleasant experience and we look forward to going back.

Yelp
Update on our July 4th experience at the Chart House The waiter was DEFINITELY sick and we both woke up this morning with very sore throats. Note to Chart House management...do NOT make your employees work when they are clearly symptomatic of any type of contagious illness. This could easily have been avoided if the waiter stayed home instead of infecting others including patrons of the restaurant!! We are both feeling cruddy

Yelp
I was really excited to bring my partner here for his birthday this past Sunday and everything was going great until our waiter kept forgetting the things we would ask for . It didn't really bother us until our appetizer came and it was cold ,when we let our waiter know about it being cold. He asked us if we were okay with him sticking it in the microwave to warm it up instead of it being remade . For the amount of money being paid for dinner I would expect the service of the food to be better . The waiter had also recommended to add on vegetables with our meals , which he then forgot to bring out and still added it to the bill . The food overall was pretty average and not worth the price , it just a shame because I was excited to visit this restaurant. Lastly I made reservations stating I was celebrating a birthday and never once was it offered to order a dessert or asked if we were celebrating anything that night . The views were nice but just overall wouldn't want to come back sadly .

Yelp
What went well? Everything! The food is amazing The service and the view! . We've gone a few times now & always delicious. I wish I could remember something my son had, he said it was the best he's ever had, not sure if it was the clams or the salmon ‍, I can definitely 2nd the salmon! I've had it & it was perfection. Ribeye as well was fantastic . Portions are small but you still leave full. We have left with a doggy bag, if you are above a doggy bag you might get your excuse ready in advance....like dog sitting if you have something left, it's so yummy, you will want to at least share with the dog ;) .

Yelp
Had reservation at 8pm, sat over 1.5hrs late because they said they were a bit behind. Labor Day weekend but not a great excuse. Could have been rectified by them... but then came the dinner. Wife had the worst $50 steak, dry and flavorless. It was 10:30pm so too late to ask for it redone, or to go somewhere else. I had shrimp pasta, got sick later that night. All the management would have had to do was apologize for the poor service or offer a complementary drink/food, but instead we had to comment when they gave us the bill, and the manager made us feel unwelcome. Server and hostess were good, not their fault, but management needs a refresh if company cares about customer service

Yelp
Thoroughly Disappointed - Chart House Dana Point We have been coming to the Chart House for a couple of years, and while the food and location are still incredible, the service has completely fallen apart. Our last two visits were beyond frustrating, and frankly, unacceptable for a restaurant of this caliber and price point. During our recent dinner on Thursday, August 28, we were seated at a dirty table -- old check still sitting there, no clean plates, no silverware. Our server (a sweet, attentive young man who told us he'd only been serving for a month after starting as a busser) was clearly overwhelmed. He was doing his best but had absolutely no support. We waited endlessly for basics like plates and silverware, even having to ask a food runner and eventually for my husband to physically get up and go to the bar to grab them himself. That should never happen at any restaurant, let alone here. When our entrée arrived -- a $60+ steak -- it was cold, flavorless, and disappointing. We sent it back, and instead of acknowledging the mistake, the manager came over 10 minutes later and literally dropped another steak on the table without a single apology, explanation, or attempt to make things right. It felt like they were just brushing us off and hoping we'd accept it. Completely unprofessional and insulting. Still, we decided to give the Chart House another shot for takeout on Sunday, September 1. We ordered two swordfish entrées and two lava cakes, told 30 minutes. When we arrived, the host was rude, dismissive, and told us to "go check with the kitchen" ourselves. At the kitchen counter, no one greeted us. Staff walked right by as if we didn't exist. When someone finally checked, they told us "10 more minutes." Ten minutes came and went -- still nothing. When we asked the girl helping with the takeout who the head manager was, she shrugged and said, "I don't know, I just work in the kitchen." Then, when it came time to pay, my husband tried to use a gift card, and she said she didn't know how to process it. We waited several more minutes while she went to get someone else to figure it out. To make matters worse, when we finally got our food, there were no utensils or napkins in the bag. Even if we weren't planning on using them, that's basic restaurant takeout 101 -- you always include them. The fact that this was overlooked just summed up the lack of care and standards across the board. And here's the part that makes it even more disappointing: last month, in July, we went to Water Grill in Costa Mesa and had exceptional service. The staff there were overly attentive in the best way -- making sure we had everything we needed, tables wiped immediately after every dish, silverware replaced without us having to ask, drinks always refreshed. Our server was excited to be there, knowledgeable, and genuinely made us feel like royalty. At a restaurant of that caliber, service must be flawless, and Water Grill delivered. We were so impressed we even asked for the manager to personally thank her and the team, because we know great service starts with leadership. That's the difference. The service issues at Chart House are not about the servers -- they're set up to fail. This is management's fault. There's no leadership, no accountability, and no standard being upheld. For the amount of money people spend here, service should be exceptional every single time. Instead, it's careless, dismissive, and disrespectful to paying customers. My advice: don't waste your money here until management gets completely overhauled. This restaurant has the food and the view, but without real leadership, it's just an overpriced disappointment.

Yelp
Any review of this restaurant has to start with the view which is by far one of the nicest I've experienced. The Chart House is situated on a cliff several hundred feet above sea level. We were there for dinner August 20,2025. The visibility was unlimited and was alone worth the visit. We sat outside on a beautiful summer evening. Our waiter was a pleasant, professional. The food was pretty good. We started with shrimp avocado and mango stack. It was fine. My wife had sole on fire. Very fresh, crab stuffed sole filets. Yum. I had the spiced ahi tuna which was cooked just right. Very good. Desert was a disappointment. Three little crème brûlée cups. One of the three had a very strong bitter taste. The windshields are a welcome comfort measure but in need of a good cleaning.

Yelp
My wife and I decided to take my 91 year old mom and her friend to Happy Hour at the Chart House. We always enjoy happy hours at Chart House but had never been to this one.The views are incredible! It overlooks the marina. It pays to come early as it gets crowded quick. Our waiter Tony was exceptional and humorous. We had lettuce wraps, lobster tartar, sliders and coconut shrimp. All were good with the shrimp being the biggest hit.Drinks were good and always refreshed.Tony then offered to a take a picture with the view ending a great evening.Parking can be an issue but valet is available.

Yelp
Chart House has a great Happy Hour that starts at 4pm and lasts until 6pm M-F. Thankfully, on my latest visit my boyfriend and I showed up right on time and were able to grab one of the few available outdoor tables. The view of the harbor cannot be beat. The server was very attentive and didn't seem disappointed that we only wanted to order a drink. We left after an hour as we weren't ready for dinner or happy hour food and the sun was beating down on us. We were surprised to not see any umbrellas outside given how hot it was. Overall, the happy hour drink selection is good and this is a great place to come for happy hour or a fancy dinner.

Yelp
One of the most poorly run Restauraunts I've been to in my life. Our reservation was irrelevant, happy hour prices only applied to a small subset of tables - which we could have sat at if we knew - but instead we were waiting as directed by the hostess until the bar seating booths and tables were all full. Only then were we told the happy hour prices didn't apply to our seat because it was several feet away. We will never go back.
