The smallest of the three Mughal gardens of Srinagar, the Chasme Shahi is nestled in the Northern slopes of the Zabarwan range, up from the right bank of the Dal.
The garden was constructed around an ancient spring with supposed medicinal properties, by Shah Jahan for his eldest son Dara Shikoh.
The garden is laid in the 'chahar bagh' layout, beautifully terraced across the hills. The spring housed within a beautiful Mughal pavilion is the center piece, from where channels symmetrically divide the garden into parts. Pathways on either side of the channel lead one from the entrance gateway up to the pavilion.
Trees of various species abound, with flowering plants arranged in beds.
Tickets can be bought from near the entrance. Parking space outside the garden, is limited.
*Tips: There are 3-4 stores near the entrance of the garden, selling local souvenirs, collectibles, etc. Although they are fixed price shops, their prices are very reasonable and fair (compared to similar shops lining the Dal Boulevard).
