While planning our trip to Scandinavia, my BF and I knew that we had to stop by Tromso to view the Northern Lights. Knowing that seeing the lights would be a gamble, I booked 2 nights with Chasing Lights to increase our chances of viewing them and hoped for the best. Trisha was very prompt in her replies.
On the morning of, Trisha e-mailed us the time at which we should wait outside our hotel. They picked us up in a bus and we were off! On the first night, we stopped after about 30 minutes of driving. On the second night, it was about an hour and a half. We were fortunate to have 2 nights of spectacular shows that lasted hours.
Our guide, Julian, was friendly and upbeat. His enthusiasm was very contagious. Being a photographer himself, he was able to take really nice photos of everyone with the lights as backdrop and also helped us with our camera settings. Our drive, Pavvo (spelling?), was also very friendly and helpful. He went out of his way to make sure everyone was comfortable.
We were served hot chocolate, tea, and cookies as we enjoyed the long light show. Later in the evening, a campfire was lit and reindeer pelts were set up around it to sit on. For dinner we were served dehydrated backpacking food. This was the best backpacking food my BF and I ever had. We liked it so much that we bought a bunch before heading back to the States.
This is a very well organized company who knows what they are doing. If seeing the Northern Lights is something on your bucket list, I highly recommend going with Chasing Lights. They've definitely provided us with an experience we will never forget.
Things that were provided:
Gear: Tripod, suit, snow boots, hand and feet warmers, furry hat.
Food: hot chocolate, cookies, tea, and a hot meal made from dehydrated camp food.
The bus had wi-fi.
Tip 1: The lights aren't as green as in photos. It looks more like light gray with a tinge of green. The reason they are super green in the photos is because the camera picks up more light.
Tip 2: It had seemed that my camera battery quickly ran out of juice. Our guide informed me that my batteries might just be cold. After 15 minutes of warming up in my pocket, I popped my battery back in to find that I had way more juice than I thought.
Tip 3: Our guide happily helped everyone with their camera settings. ISO ~800, aperture wide open, shutter speed 8-20 seconds depending on the brightness of the lights.
