Yelp
When travelling, I often engage locals in conversation about their favorite whatever: where would you take a best friend from out of town to dinner in your hometown? Where would you recommend your friends to stay? (If not at your house?)
That's how I "discovered" Chateau Apres. Chatting with a man at a luggage carousel in Salt Lake who had regularly taken groups to the Chateau.
So I tried it in the 80s, and since the mid-90s, haven't missed a year during ski season. The draw...price (of course), but also location and hospitality.
Leslie's description is the most similar to my experience and the most up-to-date of the yelps. It has always been squeaky clean everywhere. There is daily bathroom and trash service, but you keep your sheets for the duration or if you ask for a change. They are plain but lovely soft sheets. Each year there are new upgrades to this family owned facility. So Patrick won't rip his head on the TV, there are now flatscreens throughout. A new iMac computer was delivered while I was there last month replacing the community PC in the lobby. Carpet on stairs and in the lobby was replaced a few years ago. New beds appeared one year, this year there are some new fluffy pillows and new bedspreads.
The fire in the lobby is a gathering place at night. For many years raconteurs would practice tall tale telling. This year, however, more people socialized at the fire via their various cell phones and computers....and there was little live conversation.
Breakfast is basic, but really, it's what most of us would make many days at home. There are many options in town and on the various hills for a more hearty breakfast, but at the Chateau breakfast the coffee pot is always fresh, orange juice and they provide a great assortment of the most popular cereals. Definitely gets you started well. The local grocers cater to visitors and you can purchase fruit and salads, soups and pastries to bring back to the community fridge for dinner or breakfast augmentation. Many guests will bring home leftovers from Chinese or other generous portioned restaurants, and save it for tomorrow in that fridge.
There are two floors of rooms that can accommodate 1 to 4 guests. The towels are basic also. They are adequate if Spartan. Sometimes I have brought an old big towel and then trash it rather than bring it home. Thereare also dorms that are classic hostel. I've also done that many years...the price is amazing. Check to see if the dorms are open. Can be chilly, but there are ways to keep warm!
More on location: Chateau Apres is one block from the free bus which takes you to all three ski areas, the new more distant Redstone Center with a new Cinema, Whole Foods and other restaurants and the Outlet Shops across the highway. The Chateau is also three properties away from the Park City Library, where visitors may use the computers or check out books with a special guest card. On weekends, the Park City Film Series screens mostly indies in the auditorium above the library. This is a community evening out and mostly attended by residents. I love being close enough to walk home in two or three minutes after an evening in the library or at the film series. You don't really need a car in PC, and certainly not if you stay at the Chateau!
It is my ideal vacation to ski, read, catch up on interesting films, eat out, browse galleries (Coda and many others), the Kimball Art Center (Ansel Adams just closed), all either walking distance or that free bus ride away! The reported walking distance to Park City Resort is only two blocks from the back door out the second floor. I prefer to leave my gear at Deer Valley in the free overnight check, and hop the bus in the morning. DV doesn't need my Yelp as they are celebrating the fourth consecutive annual #1 resort rating in Ski Magazine.
Guests at the Chateau include regulars from all over the world who are serious about skiing and care about their finances. I enjoy meeting these folks, something that probably wouldn't happen if I rented a condo or stayed in an upscale hotel.
