New Zealand Road Trip Itinerary: 2-4 Weeks (Updated 2025)

"I stayed about ten minutes from the glacier at Chateau Backpacker & Motels and enjoyed free homemade soup every night, free breakfast with homemade waffles and pancakes, two communal kitchens, and a hot tub, which made for a cozy stay after glacier excursions." - Matthew Kepnes

The 7 Best Hostels in New Zealand (2025 Edition)

"More like a lodge than a hostel, this is my favorite place to stay when visiting the glaciers: it’s right next to the forest and about a ten-minute drive from the glacier, and it’s within walking distance of town. There’s free homemade soup every night, free breakfast with homemade waffles and pancakes and coffee/tea, two communal kitchens, a hot tub, a gym and coworking area, and dorm and private rooms with pod-style beds that have privacy curtains, individual reading lights, and two outlets — just be aware the Wi‑Fi isn’t the strongest when many people are online." - Matthew Kepnes

You can't find a better spot in Franz Josef! The bedroom was big, with own table, couch, fridge and bathroom! Unexpected and really amazing! They offer a lot of free things like coffe, tea, pasta or oats, and they offer amazing free services like pool table, fitness room or... Hot tube! The staff was also really nice and helpful, we loved them! And the best... Was the price! It was the cheapest accommodation of Franz Josef, but also a really unexpected and awesome one! I can say that it was the best deal quality-price that we have in the whole year travelling around New Zealand. Highly recomended!

The room was surprisingly comfortable for an old run down accommodation. As another review noted, the sheets are a bit grey, but clean. Overall good though the walls are thin. Wifi didn’t work and there isn’t a lot of parking but it is at the end of a quiet cul de sac so there is street parking.

I really enjoyed the stay here. The rooms are spacious and clean. The hot tub after a long hike is incredible and the pastries that they have are better than in a bakery. Very delicious. Highly recommend

We booked a double, ensuite room for three nights but only stayed for one night. The bathroom smelt of urine so used shaving foam to wipe around the base of the toilet. The room was very dark and dated and was in need of a really deep clean. Everywhere we looked was grubby and neglected.

The rooms are disgusting, we have moths, spiders, and caterpillars in our room everywhere and the windows look like they have not been cleaned in years. In our friends room there is water dripping from the ceiling. Wouldn't recommend staying here if you don't absolutly love bugs and don't mind a dirty room.

We were really surprised with our “deluxe” motel room - good size, microwave, coffee machine, kitchenette. Bed was comfortable & clean - altho I think the grey sheets used to be white. Laundry was rundown but washing machine & dryer still worked well. Kitchen was usable but seriously needs new tea towels 🤮 Property manager does an incredible job, but buildings are tired, needs bathroom refresh & rotten timbers replaced.
