Chateau Capitoul, near Narbonne, Languedoc, France - Explore & Book

"Perched on a breezy hillock, Chateau Capitoul is all wow-factor. Its sunset-facing terrace overlooks pure Languedoc pastoral, with pinstriped vines sloping down to the flamingo-dotted Bages Lagoon. Only a 15-minute bucolic waterside cycle from the small town of Guissan and the coast, and 7 miles from the historic city of Narbonne, the original chateau has eight rooms. Nearby, 44 self-catering villas, perfect for families with older children, are discreetly set into the hillside. These echo traditional local style; chateau and villas all have big views. Behind the chateau rises the escarpment of the Massif de la Clape. The Languedoc has long been thought of as the less chic cousin of the Cote d’Azur, but a hotel like this looks to change that, with rooms that purr with dove-grey elegance, fluffy-cloud towels, a snazzy infinity pool, and restored vintage chandeliers. Chateau Capitoul is a collaboration between Irish hoteliers Karl and Anita O'Hanlon, of Domaine Demeure, and the Vignoble Bonfils family. Wine has been made here since the 12th century, with the Bonfils running the 62-hectare estate since 2011. The chateau gardens are likewise an eco-feat: hardy, locally grown florals that require no irrigation were planted by designer James Basson, four times Gold winner at the Chelsea Flower Show. Add a brace of gastronomic restaurants, a Cinq Mondes Spa, and the large sheltered terrace with long views, and you've hit the sweet spot. Highs A choice of gastronomic dining or a less-formal bar-restaurant. As befits the wine estate setting there are wine-related activities year round too Beautifully decorated rooms with beautiful blue-marbleized bathrooms (in the chateau) Great spa and indoor and outdoor heated pools Biking and walking routes from the chateau into the surrounding countryside and lots of places to visit We loved the extraordinary ecologically friendly gardens in the villas and the main estate Lows It’s usually breezy here, but if in warm weather there’s a spell of rain and the air is still, there will likely be mosquitos It seems churlish to mention, but if you’re staying in the chateau, it’s a short walk across the courtyard and terrace to the main pool Not as toddler-friendly as sister properties Chateau Les Carrasses and Villas St Pierre de Serjac due to the sloping hillsides" - Abigail Blasi

"A vineyard-fringed hilltop in the Languedoc countryside is the setting for Château Capitoul, a fairy-tale castle containing eight ultra-chic rooms and suites, each one a luxurious mix of classical, contemporary, Art Deco, and Art Nouveau elements. And Château Capitoul offers many luxuries outside of the lodgings, from tennis and pétanque to a stunning infinity pool and a Cinq Mondes spa, as well as a pair of highly regarded restaurants, the gastronomic Méditerannéo and the more casual wood-fired Asado. Of particular note is the estate’s dedication to its environment; the gardens are not just beautiful but a marvel of sustainability as well." - Tablet Hotels

What a stunning hotel! The location and view make this chateau a must visit! The pool has wonderful views, a pool bar, comfy chairs and peace and quiet! We visited in July and it was very peaceful and it didn't feel busy at all! The rooms are comfortable and the staff are wonderful! We can't wait to return!

I stayed 3 nights in one of the villas with my mother, sister and sister in laws and we had such an amazing experience. The site itself is stunning, the decor of all of the villas and restaurants is so tasteful and the landscaping on the grounds is so sympathetic to the surroundings. The infinity pool overlooking the vineyards is magnificent. The food was outstanding, local produce expertly handled and the staff were really accommodating and knowledgeable. We were given excellent recommendations for local restaurants in the area. I would highly recommend Chateau Capitoul for anyone looking for a luxury relaxing retreat.

We stayed in the Villas for a few days. Every single thing--from the accommodations, to the staff, to the amenities, was completely top notch! The spa and the restaurant were both excellent as well. I cannot tell you what a pleasure it was to look out from our beautifully furnished villa to the most expansive view of the vineyard and lake beyond it. I would love to live here! We had a three-week trip throughout Europe, and the Chateau Capitoul was a perfectly restful retreat that allowed us a perfect pause from our busy trip.

The entire experience was truly exceptional. The villa was absolutely stunning, and any minor issues were dealt with promptly and professionally. The restaurant and bar were beautifully designed and offered a lovely atmosphere. The spa was pure perfection, and having the bike available made exploring nearby town and restaurants incredibly easy.||||We also drove to the beach and enjoyed a delicious meal by the sea.||||If there’s one suggestion for improvement, it would be to open the poolside snack bar and offer light lunch options perhaps pizza or sandwich. After all, who doesn’t enjoy a good a light lunch, perhaps a portion of fries while on holiday?

We couldn't have been happier throughout our week at Chateau Capitoul. The level of thought, care and attention applied to everything was second to none, with the most stunning surroundings and villa views to die for! It almost feels like a hidden gem, with us only finding out about this company through a friend's recommendation, and we have already told many others about it too. Well suited for couples, friends, families and business.

Loved our very spacious, comfortable villa with beautiful views and pool. Walked, cycled and explored the beautiful surrounds and towns. Relaxed and took in the lake and vineyard views. The perfect family break

This was our second stay and it was exactly as we remembered - utterly peaceful and removed from the rest of the world. The pool is just heaven, with incredible views, particularly at sunset, supported by Charlotte’s rather excellent way with a vodka, soda and lime (also known as a skinny b*tch but not well understood in these parts so Charlotte’s know how was a winner) and her wingmen Lea and Olivia who deliver snack food to keep the kids fed and me away from the kitchen at lunch. We didn’t do Asado this trip since it’s a victim of its own success in popularity terms and with 11 of us it was easier to BBQ. The houses are interior decorated to a jealousy-inducing degree (they’re so lovely and I want to steal the writing desk), and are thoughtfully equipped with a BBQ / hot plate, full kitchen and washing machine and dryer, they are perfect if you don’t fancy the hassle of going to a restaurant. Although if you fancy a treat, we ate in Mediterraneo last year and found it sophisticated with lovely service. Maintenance and housekeeping have been very responsive and a shout out to Max at reception who called every dentist in Narbonne on our behalf for a minor dental emergency. Gorgeous place and highly recommend it. The most relaxed I’ve felt all summer.

8/3|We went there to have a drink. |Not a windy day today. All the umbrellas were closed Their terrasse is in full sun.we were told they were worried about rafales. |The two young waitresses present obviously seemed to need some training and learn how to smile and talk to the customer.|This was not my first visit, the fist time was a total different experience
