We stayed at this beautiful property for five nights. It is stunning, visually, inside and out. Put quite simply, this is the most luxurious Chambre d'hote we have stayed in: the rooms were enormous, beautifully furnished, seemingly with no-expense spared. The beds were super-king size and super-comfortable. The bathrooms matched the bedroom with an enormous his-and-hers walk-in shower and his-and-her sinks. Again, the fitments were top quality. There were also five or so huge "salons" for guests to use. Each was furnished to the highest standard. COMFORT is certainly the watchword in this establishment.
Our hosts, Jennifer and Don, were welcoming and friendly (glass of champagne on arrival; pot of home made fig jam on departure!). Jennifer arranged for us to have a three course dinner made for us on the premises by an established French chef to eat in - superb food, unlimited wine with each course (inc. dessert wine with pudding!) and great value at 75 Euros pp. The breakfast buffet was extensive: boiled eggs, fruit, granola, yogurt, croissants, bread etc etc.
The grounds are extensive and the pool lovely, but sadly, the weather was a little cool, so we could not take advantage of it.
Restaurants were an easy 10 minute drive to the nearest village (we would recommend Les Singuliers (French, gastronomic) and - yes! - the Taj Mahal. The pizzeria was pretty good too. Belet is a 30 minute drive to Perigueux, a wonderful town packed with restaurants, patisseries, and all things French (including a fabulous Saturday market). Other markets are available on other days in small nearby towns like Riberac (15 mins drive).
We would make one observation: our hosts have a four month old setter puppy which is, naturally, full of life. She is good natured and lovely, but boisterous. She is mainly kept out of sight in the owners' apartment, but is sometimes allowed to roam through the building. Whilst this was fine for us, we do think that this might make others who aren't comfortable with dogs less comfortable.
So to end, we'd like to say a HUGE thank you to Jennifer and Don for a truly memorable stay. As Arnie would say: we'll be back!
