35 Most Haunted Places in the World

"This 17th-century Loire Valley castle incorporates two towers from the medieval castle — once occupied by Jacques de Brézé, the Duke of Bressac — that it replaced. According to legend, after de Brézé caught his wife, Charlotte, and one of his huntsmen en flagrant délit in the south tower, he killed them both on the spot. Some visitors have claimed to have seen Charlotte’s ghost, nicknamed The Green Lady for the color of her dress, roaming the halls. Visit the château and try to spot her yourself. Honestly, though, the stunning architecture alone is worth the trip." - Travel + Leisure Editors

The 10 Most Haunted Places in Europe

"Legend has it the Château de Brissac saw a double murder during the 15th century — an unfaithful wife by the name of Charlotte de Breze and her romantic partner killed by her husband. The woman still wanders the castle today, forever stuck there after her untimely death. She is known as la Dame Verte, the Green Lady, because she wears a green gown, and is often spotted in the tower room of the chapel." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Well worth the visit; chateau and the area to walk around. Beautiful interior and the history was well presented. I wouldn't get overly excited about the wine it's pretty average, considering there's some really excellent producers/vineyards in the near by area.

Stunning castle set in well kept grounds. Sun shining today which made the walks even more enjoyable. The interior was well worth seeing. Not too busy which allowed time to take in everything on display. Certainly would recommend a stop here, parking just across the street. Staff really helpful too 😊

Very nice place. For young parents: you can walk around the castle with baby in baby carrier, stroller cant come. The castle is beautiful and the story is great to, good tour.

As part of our recent western Val de Loire tour (south of Angers) we revisited the Château de Brissac, this time to experience the landscaped park as we had previously toured the château interior in May 2024. Tip - there's a special rate for a park only tour and a map available on the château website. Our walk took us round past the stables then up the hill to the Mausoleum. afterwards the  walk to the pont rouge then back along the river to the château. All in about 1h15. Absolutely beautiful and well worth a visit I recommend.

Lovely place to visit with a little wine tasting in the cellar, well with a visit! It is worth noting that while there is a lift inside the castle there is still about 20 steps to reach the castle at the start. Also the cellar is not accessible by lift so you would need to leave the castle (20 steps again) then walk around the side to enter. However despite this, the accessibility was better than expected for such an old building.

Really excellent place, and worth a visit. History is very well done. Great cafe on site with very friendly staff. Grounds are great for a visit and the donkeys are freindly to pet!

It was great. They had a costume party on the day we went, but the castle and translations of information for different languages is great!

The guided tour (in French) was really worth it, lasts just 45 mins and covers the outside of the castle and the first floor (you can do the rest by yourself). The guide was a good speaker and had a lot of interesting anecdotes. There is a wine tasting in the cave. The park is beautiful and has several long trails.

Yelp
By guided tour only. Château de Brissac is a current residence for the Brissac family that counts Veuve Clicquot among their ancestors. The château has seven stories altogether, making it the tallest château in the Loire Valley. The front of the house is an interesting combination of medieval castle and 17th century's Baroque architecture The house is lovely and still holds gorgeous artwork of the family, furniture and tapestries from the centuries and we got to see their own theatre where they would put on plays and recitals. Large kitchen underground where I understand they offer cooking classes Their grounds have several paths to tour us around the expansive property. We saw their stables and vineyards. We also went into their underground tunnel. Very cool We walked right up & got into their next tour - it was french but english translations were handed out & since the majority of the group were english-speakers, the guide offered commentary in both languages. Very nice of him!
