Chateau de Codignat (Bort-l'Étang, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"There are chateaux, and then there are chateaux. This one, near the village of Bort l’Etang in the lush Auvergne countryside, is the real deal, a relic of the 14th century. Fully rebuilt after falling on hard times in the 18th, it nevertheless comes complete with turrets, towers, and crenellations, like something straight out of a fairy tale or a period drama. But since the Seventies, the Château de Codignat has been not a fortress but a luxury hotel — and after some more recent expansions and renovations it features 19 rooms and suites, divided between the original castle, a separate chalet on the estate’s grounds, and a pair of poolside cottages." - Tablet Hotels

This place is absolutely stunning. It was by far the most unique stay we’ve had! The castle is gorgeous and the staff are so kind and welcoming! They were very attentive and considerate. The decorations are very classy and it was so neat to have dinner there, felt like royalty. It was the perfect way to spend our new year eve and definitely the most memorable. A romantic getaway and perfect for couples. Would recommend this to everyone! ☺️

A magical place, knowledgeable staff under fantastic sleep. New owners since May 2024 and it’s a work in progress but it’s an absolutely beautiful place. We were hosted by Layla a delightful front of house and she made our visit incredibly special.

Absolutely fantastic place! We were pinching ourselves when we arrived. The chateau was beautiful, full of history and the most charming quirks. Very well maintained, luxurious and every little thing thought through. Benjamin and Leila were so friendly, thoughtful and kind — their hospitality was unmatched. Leila took the time to tell us all about the chateau and its history in seriously fluent English. Both of them really took the time to be fantastic hosts. The area was quiet, peaceful and restorative. It’s a shame we only had one night because it was too short a stay. I believe in French, you could say “sans fautes”! We hope to be back, thanks so much for having us.

We stayed for one night on our drive from the west coast of France to the Alps. The hotel is beautiful and in a very quiet/secluded spot outside Clermont-Ferrand. Beautiful grounds & a lovely swimming pool area. The staff were all fantastic from arrival to departure. The decor is heavy and ornate but largely in keeping with the medieval nature of the Chateau. We ate dinner outside on the terrace which was first class - highly recommended and again, the staff were very attentive. All in all a beautiful setting. Our only negatives would be that, in this day and age, given that it is advertised as a 5 star hotel and is not cheap, a more modern bathroom setup would be more appropriate - by all means keep the traditional nature but add proper showers (ours was a hand shower in a bath). My wife noted that the hairdryer (wall mounted) was cheap & would be more at home in an Ibis hotel. Finally, again for the level of hotel/price, a couple of complimentary bottles of water would be welcome - €12 for a mid-sized bottle!||Otherwise, a beautiful country hotel with great food and wonderful service.

We wanted a quiet week end in a special place and got just that.|Our room was small but it is a 10th century castle not a NYC condo! The bathroom was a bit awkward I have to say but the rest was great authentic and thoughtful.|We enjoyed the garden, the swimming pool and tea time outside.||The dinner experience was very good although the quality of the service varies greatly from one person to another. Food was excellent.||The equivalent 5 stars is for me overrated but it is definitely worth 4+.||Charming week end ! Thank you !

It really looks and feels exactly like an ancient castle. Spiral stone staircases, weapons as decorations, antique portraits abound. The rooms are furnished with old authentic furniture. All the interior decor is charming. The grounds exude charm as well. The food is outstanding, so go for dinner, breakfast, room package. The only drawback is the plumbing. It’s noisy, slow and no showers, only baths.

Enjoyed our stay here. Beautiful hospitality, meals are the best I've eaten in rural France. Room cosy and had all VIP amenities. Was expensive for the food, room was reasonably priced but a nice treat if your looking to spoil that someone special. Grounds and chateau stunningly gorgeous during the night. Daytime they are very beautiful. Staff friendly and professional.
