Chateau de Saint Paterne, Near Alençon, Normandy-Loire borders, France - Explore & Book

"This beautifully restored Renaissance chateau, in the Alençon satellite village of Saint Paterne, was once home to a mistress of the French King Henry IV. Since today's owner Charles-Henry de Valbray inherited it in 1989, as a long-abandoned shell, he and his wife Ségolène have spent 3 decades restoring it with many an authentic period flourish and lashings of eclectic charm. Both speak excellent English and live in the 18th-century-added wing, so they may join you in the Dangerous-Liaisons-style Grand Salon or out on the terrace for pre-dinner aperitifs and ensure you feel right at home. Each of the chateau bedrooms has been elegantly and distinctly designed (many furnished with swagged 4-posters and free-standing tubs), and couples will love the romantic L’Orangerie in the garden and Datcha larch chalet hidden in the woods. The 25-acre garden has vast sweeping lawns, lots of outdoor games, play areas and a swimming pool so it's also a great place for families, especially in summer. Food served up in-chateau is thoroughly delicious - and good value, too. Highs Its location - 70 miles south of the port of Caen, 100 miles west of Paris - is great for stopovers, or longer stays to explore the Loire Valley, Chartres, Le Mans and the Perche region All the beautiful boho-chic bedroom choices, design touches and historical features The warm intelligence and enthusiasm of Charles-Henry and Ségolène, and the feel of staying in a historic family home The delicious homely food - and the trouble taken to record menus by date to make sure you won't have the same one when you come back! The romantic bathrooms, some with tub-mounted candles and champagne flutes; help yourself to fizz from the honesty bar Lows Lunch is not served at the chateau but poolside you'll find a fridge filled with cool drinks and ice creams and there is a boulangerie nearby Dinners are a set menu, though this changes daily and dietary requirements can be catered for There's no room service as such, but private breakfasts can be organised by special request There's no supervision at the pool so you'll need to keep an eye on any swimming children yourself, and it's worth climbing the Datcha's and Chambre du Parc's fun loft ladders with care" - Cathy Teesdale

Château de Saint Paterne (Saint Paterne - Le Chevain, Pays de la Loire) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Appearances are not always deceiving. Château de Saint Paterne is exactly what it looks like: a Renaissance-era château in Saint-Paterne, on the outskirts of Alençon, close to the border between Normandy and the Pays de la Loire and characteristic of neither, or both. The house and its 18th-century addition contain a mere five rooms and six suites, each of them unique, from the Chambre d’Henri IV, named for its most famous overnight guest, to the Datcha, a freestanding larch wood cottage with a private sauna and jacuzzi. Dinner is served in the candlelit dining room after an apéritif in the drawing room or out in the gardens." - Tablet Hotels

We have spent one night in this beautiful establishment. No stone is left unturned. Attention to detail is top of their list. The chateau is beautiful and so was the food. Great value for what you are given. The setting is magnificent and so relaxing. Highly recommend for a short break or an overnight stay.

A really lovely hotel. It’s a beautiful building set in gorgeous surroundings, with amazing food, friendly staff and a ln easy atmosphere. It’s also very dog-friendly and big enough to walk them in the grounds!

We loved our three night stay at this small family run chateau. Blessed with sunny weather we lay on loungers by the pool and dined outside in the gardens at night. ||It has a relaxed family run vibe with honesty bars in various places. ||Breakfast is a buffet in the beautiful historic dining room. Dinner is all inclusive starting with an aperitif and then a fixed menu three course meal. We had many lovely conversations with other guests.||We stayed in the Orangerie. It is huge , atmospheric and delightful . And memorable . And peaceful , set slightly away from the main hotel .||The place is very dog friendly .

This was our second visit and again we had a wonderful stay. The Chateau is just gorgeous the attention to detail and the decor is perfect you really feel like you are getting to experience a real French Chateau. We travelled with 2 children 9 and 11 who enjoyed the pool, badminton, table tennis and the lawn. They ate early made a couple of friends the same age who went off to play together whilst we could enjoy the evening meal outside it was such a perfect end to our road trip summer holiday. We wished we could have stayed for the second night but we will certainly be back again. Thank you so much

The Chateau and grounds were beautiful. The staff were friendly and accommodating. Our room was large and luxurious. The 3 course set dinner was tasty and the breakfast was excellent. The location is good for onward travel further south in France but the venue would also be good for a short break. No complaints. I'm sure we will be back.

We really liked this place. Nice rooms, nice grounds, sweet mint pool. It’s very relaxed. We took our dog, other people had babies and children. The format is everyone goes to the common area, a splendid reception room, for an aperitif at 7.30pm. You then all go to the dining room at 8. You get you own table, order your own wine, but everyone gets the same meal. It worked well. Good breakfast also.

Lovely Private house full of charm and personality. Beautiful decorated Communal rooms ( not so sure about bedrooms) There are many things about it that we LOVED 🤍🤍 the food/ and the overall feeling, gardens. It was quirky and more charm than a formal hotel setup .. The grounds are large and green, one feels relaxed and at ease.. however one can feel the lack of attention to detail and cleanliness - that is not done to an immaculate standard ( far from it ) for those that value it .. Bedcovers & pillows don’t match , there are stains in the curtains and bed covers, curtains were dirty and dark from dust…bathrooms looked and felt tired and again not so Clean ( limescale in the shower was Beyhond acceptable..). Not to mention the wardrobes.. I would not consider hanging my clothes in there .. smell and dust was more than we wanted to see. We love old houses as we live in one but windows , bathrooms and linen has to be fresh and clean.. Stunning gardens but when it came to seating and relaxing we had to do the cleaning of the garden furniture ourselves .. (we understand it’s autumn 🍂 but still.. ) Much Room for improvement…

From arrival to leaving for a one night stay the experience was terrible. About the only positive are the lovely gardens surrounding the property. We were kept waiting in the reception area whilst the lady was on the phone - no one else around. We were shown to a room and our hearts sank. It was beyond awful. All of the curtains were stained and dirty, the sofa was ripped, the rugs in the bedroom and bathroom are old and look like they have never been cleaned. The sink and bath are chipped and old and the cabinet was stained and extremely worn. The windows are all peeling and the blinds in the bathroom are stained. The throw on the bed was not clean and the floors were dirty. Then there was dinner. Everyone is given the same meal which is fine but you would expect quality if no choice given. The starter was tomato tart- my pastry was raw and the waitress (who was lovely) asked me if okay and I explained it was uncooked- zero acknowledgment from the kitchen. The main was bearable. The dessert tasted like washing up liquid although other guests cleared their plate. When checking out (after waiting again whilst issues with other guests were being sorted) I politely explained to the lady the problems she shrugged her shoulders and ushered us out of the door! We have travelled all over the world to all types of accommodation and this is the worst experience we have had. This stop was one night of a trip staying in five places over ten nights and all of the others were beautiful. This is not a low cost rate and is severely over priced. We are very aware of the nature of older authentic properties and have stayed in many. This is not even near shabby chic it is dirty and shabby. Having read the proprietors responses to other negative posts I am expecting a very curt reply. This was also part of our honeymoon trip after getting married in France. It will be unforgettable but for all of the wrong reasons
