25 Places Where Planes Are Right at Home on the Ground

"Ah, Château de Savigny-lès-Beaune! It’s everything you’d expect from an idyllic French chateau in Burgundy’s wine country: a 12-hectare property with a tree-lined driveway and manicured lawns, crossed by a river that once fed the moats of this ancient castle, and fighter jets liberally scattered across the grounds. Wait, what? Back in the 1980s, former pilot and racing-driver Michel Pont inherited a centuries-old French chateau. Pont also happened to be an avid collector of vintage planes, among other things, which for years he had rescued from countries across the world, partly to prevent them from being destroyed. Pont’s new property was the perfect place to assemble his burgeoning collection of military hardware, and local villagers strolling home from the boulangerie began to see some incongruous additions to the old chateau. Parked on its lawns were an F-100F Super Sabre, an F-16, a MiG-21, and the French fighter-bomber Dassault Super Mystère. Pont, now 87, is as of October 2019 recognized as the world’s biggest private collector of fighter planes. At the last count, his collection of fighter jets numbered 110, officially listed by Guinness as the largest collection of its type in the world. But the Château de Savigny-lès-Beaune isn’t only home to fighter planes. Nine separate museums are now located in the chateau and on its grounds, each dedicated to a different type of vehicle. As well as a soviet helicopter and a 1970s hovercraft sitting on the back lawn, visitors can explore a warehouse full of vintage fire trucks, a room containing more than 200 antique motorbikes, a collection of more than 30 Abarth racing cars, around 2,500 1:72 scale model aircraft, and about 30 high-clearance tractors built for use in the vineyards. Château de Savigny-lès-Beaune now receives around 40,000 visitors each year, a fact that has made Pont a happy man. Talking to Guinness, he explained the reason behind his collection and his joy at seeing others taking an interest: “I enjoy saving them, these objects that no one else wants anymore. If I had not been crazy enough to buy these planes they would have all been cut into pieces and made into aluminium bars…. My collections make me happy, but I’m glad other people who are passionate about them can enjoy them. It’s comforting to know I’ve not wasted my time.”" - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Wow, wow and a double wow. This place is an absolute goldmine. I could spend hours here! The collection is absolutely incredible! For motorcycle/car/airplane enthusiasts, you NEED to stop here. The entrance ticket was very reasonable (I think you can charge more though, honestly and it would still be worth every penny).

Amazing place to visit, especially for those who like cars, planes, and all things similar! Definitely worth checking out the grounds and walking among the exhibits. They also offer wine tasting on the grounds

It looks like some mad persons collected everything they could find and packed it into an old castle. Cars, fighter planes, fire trucks, bikes..... Sounds crazy but we loved it. You have to see it.

Had an amazing time here, great collection of cars and planes, something you not see very often. Really worth for money.

Excellent. Lots of planes to see and other assorted racing cars, scale models and vintage fire trucks. Worth a stop!

Stopped for a tasting on a personal wine tour so this review is specific to the wine / tasting. Chateau grounds are nice, museum seems nice, wine was “ok”. I wouldn’t go out of my way for a tasting here, but if you are here for the other reasons, a tasting is probably a nice add on. Wine bottles and tastings are less expensive than other places in the area, and good quality. Nothing that we tasted blew us away, but it was an average collection of wines. I did enjoy the Monthelie enough to buy a bottle so that says something.

We’ve been to many many château. Some are wonderful some not so much. Of all of them, this one is the best. Why? This is one of the most authentic château that you will visit in France. There are many rooms to visit, and it has been authentic preserved. It has fighter airplanes, fire trucks, racing cars, and everything else that you’ve ever wanted to see in your life. No other château has these things. This is one of the strangest places you’ll ever visit, making it wonderfully unique. It is a must see.

What an amazing place!! If you like architecture and château's, and automotive stuff, then this place is a dream.... amazing collection of Abarth cars, motorcycles, fire engines, specialist vineyard tractors, and jet fighters. I've visited motorcycle, car, and aviation museums all over the world, and this is one of the best, and so unexpected at a château in the middle of nowhere. Would love to revisit in the future as it looks like this year they've started to renovate areas and spend substantial money on the property. Was amazed to see an Aurenthetic Charger, electric midi-moto bike from USA from the 1960's / 1970's. We renovated 2 of these very rare bikes for clients in the UK and didn't think I'd ever see another, especially not in a château in France.
