Le Château des Forges (Angers, Pays de la Loire) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Le Château des Forges sits just a ten-minute drive from the center of Angers but feels like a secluded country retreat thanks to its vast gardens and views of the surrounding valley. Once a private residence, the grand 19th-century castle has been transformed into an intimate 14-room hotel with facilities that encourage guests to slow down and switch off." - Tablet Hotels

What a wonderful and amazing place to stay, the highlight of our 6 week holiday. You are greeted by a beautiful and incredible chateau nestled amongst trees and the countryside, but still within 15mins of Angers CBD. The staff are incredible and make sure that everything has been looked after, from the check-in, appertif to dinner. The views from the rooms over the valley are incredible (we stayed in the Oscar room) and you have a private balcony to enjoy the views either as the sun sets at the end of the day, or the fog slowly lifting as the sun rises in the mornings, an incredible surprise and one we enjoyed. If you are looking for a beautiful place to stay with wonderful service, views, food and wine around Angers and in the Loire Valley region then this place should be on your list. We will be sure to stay here again, and again.

⸻||We had an excellent and very comfortable stay at Les Châteaux des Forges, a cool and quirky hotel set in beautiful grounds just off the A11, only a short distance from Angers.||We stayed for two nights on our way north and were very impressed. The staff were professional, friendly and welcoming, and the whole atmosphere feels more like staying in a country house than a hotel.||Our room, Joseph, on the top floor with views over the stunning countryside, was large and airy with a very comfortable bed, good shower, double sinks and a separate loo. One practical point to note is that the lift was out of order during our stay, so those with mobility issues should be aware.||The property does not have a traditional restaurant but offers a light snack menu. We chose to eat out in Angers on both evenings. The hotel can arrange a dedicated taxi service into Angers at a fixed €38 return, which is very convenient. We also drove to a nearby tram station and found the tram system into the city excellent.||If you’re looking for a relaxed stay with character, charm and a quirky vibe, this hotel is perfect.

All looks and some substance -- the architecture and decor is very pretty. The place feels sheltered and secluded despite being close to the city and the highway. There is a heated outdoor pool. Some of the rooms have specific decorative themes. The beds and linen are high quality. The bathrooms are large and also very nice. And yet... as soon as you scratch the surface of "luxury", you run into the reality of not a crumble of food during the day unless pre-ordered the day before, all common areas closing as early as 9:30, an extremely limited range of available drinks, because the place didn't spring for a licence, and the list goes on. The buffet breakfast was delicious, but the pre-ordered dinner was mediocre at best. If you like an overpriced pretty facade to take pictures, go for it. If you want the real deal, it's not here.

The hotel is very lovely and set in a lovely location. Easy to park and easy to get into town. The floors are old wooden floorboards that do creak so at night you can hear other guests moving to and from their rooms. This isn’t overly annoying and you still can sleep but if you are a light sleeper it might be more of a concern The evening food ‘snack’ we found was very basic and only comes with a small salad with no real sides. So is definitely more of a snack than diner.

Wonderfully unique establishment. Staff is first rate. Unfortunate mix-up leading to room in annex, not in main castle. Nevertheless, hotel made it up with in-room gifts and utmost cordiality and professionalism. Kudos to Gabriel. Sorry it was only for one night.

Well located just off fast roads, although you would probably want to drive or get a taxi to the nearest restaurants. The rooms are impressive as is the building but the one we had was disappointing being almost a basement on one side and very dark. They were full but it didn't feel like a £120 room with a view. We decided to eat in and sampled the tasting menu which was good and along with a bottle of wine enjoyable. The teas available in the room were only herbal so we requested plain black tea and milk. The milk was fine but the tea was earl grey. Take your own tea bags if you prefer English breakfast/ Yorkshire tea. Service was friendly polite and attentive.

A jewel of a little castle nestled in a wooded area overlooking the Mayenne and Ile Saint Aubin. Extremely charming, authentic, with a warm and friendly yet very discreet staff, which maintains a very relaxing a quiet atmosphere. The swimming pool is very enjoyable and refreshing (just slightly heated which we thought was perfect), the message services (at an extra cost) are excellent and the breakfast buffet is delish. We also appreciated very much the sustainability efforts which we strongly adhere to. The only thing we were disappointed in was the fact eBikes are not made available for quick trips to the city for lunch / dinner ; we had to pay a half day of rental for less than half an hour of actual biking (15 min to the restaurant and back). Also note that this is an older castle and not a a modern building so expect creaking floorboards, limited soundproofing in the hallways and smaller communal spaces. As far as we're concerned we absolutely loved the genuineness of the place and the taste with which it was accommodated but it might not be for everyone. We found it perfect to escape as a couple, to unwind and recharge our batteries! We will come back for sure.
