Château des Milandes

A great place to visit. We left inspired by life of Josephine Baker (audio tour in English and thoughtfully arranged) and the beautiful surroundings. Not just a great visit for adults, but also for youngsters. The falconry display was an unexpected highlight of our visit and was enjoyed by all.

absolutely lovely experience! the tour was great with audio options in several languages. not too crowded and you could spend as much time in each room as you wanted. very detailed history and descriptions of each room. the gardens were beautiful and so lovely to room. even stayed for the bird show which was so cool, they did a great job showing the birds around to every corner where people were sitting. could easily spend the whole day there, so much to see!!

Get a glimpse of what Josephine Baker was as a person and where she lived. Lots of personal letters, clothing to see to get a imagine of life back in the 30,40's and so on. Not only the chateau is worth the visit but also the garden. It's worth the visit on its own. Beautifully landscapes garden, downside is the owls and falcons being in, what looks to me a small cage. Feels like that shouldn't be a thing in 2025. You do get to see them close by. You probably wouldn't see them in the wild

Loved every second.. a fascinating visit. I could hear Josephine Baker’s singing as we wandered .. The interior has been beautifully curated with authentic touches. The family kitchen was very special 🥰.. An amazing story about a fabulous lady! The ‘Birds of Prey’ exhibition is a bonus!

So loved this beautiful home of Josephine Baker. So much to see. Half hour bird of prey show in the grounds, included in the price. The grounds and house were Spectacular. It was one of my favourite things during my 9 day holiday in France.

This Chateau is really worth a visit. It is attractive architecturally. It is made especially attractive by the well currated story of Josephine Bakers' life there, who was quite an amazing woman. It is set in beautifully landscaped grounds and has a great bistro. Basically, it's just a great place to visit.

Great venue for families and couples. The new cinema telling the story of Josephine Baker is a great addition. The lunch in the restaurant was very reasonable

What a beautiful and very interesting place to spend half a day. Josephine Baker's chateau. What a marvellous woman, the grounds and chateau are beautiful.

A pleasant surprise. Josephine Baker's home for 30 years has been brought back to its former glory. The grounds and gardens are immaculate, with a troop of gardeners picking up every leaf and planting new flowers near the chapel. A falconry show begins at 11:15, with another at 4. Audioguides in numerous languages are available at the gift shop and start of the tour. The gorgeous chateau has an interesting history beginning in the 15th century, with gargoyles galore. Josephine, resistance fighter, humanitarian, and world renowned singer and dancer from the 1920s to the 60s, installed some amazing bathrooms into the chateau, which has lots of stairs. Great views over the valley and village. Pieces of her music are available on the audio guide. A woman-owned business about an amazing woman. Cafe and toilets are available. Free parking, but tickets are required to enter grounds.

Chateau Milandes was built in the early 15th Century, but it's most famous inhabitant (in my opinion) was Josephine Baker. She started renting the Château in 1937, then bought it and lived their till the late 1960s. This is where she raised her flock of adopted children (she had 12!). Evicted and swindled in her later years, she spent her final years elsewhere, dying in Paris in 1975. The Château was bought 20 some years ago, and the current owner and her daughter have brought back the Château and gardens in all their glory! The items on display map out Baker's tumultuous life, from her birth in Jim Crow Missouri to her rise to fame on the French entertainment world. Truly fascinating and a must see for any fan of Josephine Baker!

Semi-restored. The place is kind of a mish mash. Except for the castle exterior the inside has barely any traces of original 15th century architecture. Fun visit for 2 hours. Interior is a shrine to Josephine Baker, a stage show actress/singer/dancer/provocateur/social justice heroine from the 1920's - 1960's. If you do not know about her you can learn some biographical history. But if history lessons are not your thing, this place may not be worth your travel effort. My favorite live event on the back lawn was the raptors show. Trained falcons, hawks, eagles, owls fly among the spectators. They get up close. The falconer's educational monologue is in rapid fire French, unless you're fluent the info will be lost. The formal garden is pretty. Admission ticket is € 12.

This is a lovely chateau, worth going out of your way to see. Not only a gorgeous building, but an interesting history of one of its owners: Josephine Baker. There is also a falconry program there, with flight programs where the audience is very close to the birds. Beautiful gardens to enjoy as well. It's also a perfect place for lunch, with good restaurant with a delightful outdoor seating area.

After a thunderstorm last night and the exertions of yesterday, a short trip was called for and, after lunch, we headed for Chateau des Milandes, the former residence of song and dance star Josephine Baker who died suddenly in 1975 during the run of a show celebrating her fifty years in show biz. The American was a huge success sin Paris for much of the first half of the 20th century but never forgot her American roots and the discrimination against her fellow African Americans. She sacrificed contracts in the fight which saw her famously march in Washington in August 1963 with Dr Martin Luther King. Already she had made the Chateau a home for 10 boys and 2 girls of different nationalities. The rooms in the Chateau, including her bedroom and bathroom, are among those on the tour and, in the Grand Salon, you see many of her famous costumes, also many photos and original drawings of her in the Folie Bergere. A popular part of any visit to Milandes is the Birds of Prey Display under the charge of falconers Patrick and Steve. Birds put through their paces include a Kestrel Falcon, a Harris Hawk, a Barn Owl, an eagle owl, a falcons and an American fish eagle. Don't miss the show, usually on twice in the afternoons, not always in the mornings.
