An Autumnal Road Trip Through Alsace Wine Country

"Continue on to Haut-Koenigsbourg. Dating back to the Middle Ages, the castle was renovated in the 1900s at Kaiser Wilhelm II’s command. Today the fortress is surprisingly well-preserved and a popular tourist attraction—tickets run €9 ($10) apiece."

Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg is one of the most complete castle I've ever visited in Germany, not just the 900 years of history it carries, also the fact that it's a German castle in France. You'll learn lots of things, to me, one of the most special thing here is how they demonstrate all those medieval period armour and swords ⚔️, you realize that how the knights fought back to hundreds years ago. Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg is also a perfect spot to enjoy the view of the territory of kingdom used to be.

Great View from the mountain top, also nicely restored castle. Kind of shows the common French-German history quite well. Nice place to visit. Not the cheapest visit, but definitely worth it.

Went on a weekday right after the chateau opened. Not a bad crowd, we waited in line maybe 10 minutes. Would definitely recommend, it's nicely maintained and staged. But of a walk up, from the parking, but not bad at all

Impressive castle with amazing views over Alsace. Very well restored and full of history. It can get quite chilly up there, even in warmer months, so dress properly.

As it seems with all restored castles, this one looks real and authentic with reconstruction finished in 1908. I wish the weather was more accommodating at the time of my visit to check out the views of surroundings from the castle walls, but, alas, fog was just getting denser. That added eerie feeling moving the floors and entryways of the castle. Genuinely liked the visit, kind of scored all the marks visiting European castle. Castle has started as a watchtower for Rhine surveillance in 1147 and expanded in to a fortress at the end of 12th century. Fell into disrepair and neglect in 17th century and had its lucky break in 1899 when Kaiser Wilhelm II decided to restore it.

Google
True travel through time as you enter the castle doors. You can feel the deep connection with the Middle Ages and the ways of life in that castle. There is a rich presentation of the rooms and l their decors based on the era. In addition to the unbelievable gorgeous view of the hills around since you are on top of the mountain. A fantastic must-see, in my opinion

I think it's one of the best preserved castles I have ever seen. Absolutely worth a visit! The mountain ridge is 757m and the castles defense towers are 65m high. Fantastic panoramic views over Alsace.

:) ...it really goes to show that they care about the visitor experience when I get a response even before I get the chance to write a proper review. But they got it right... and the place is fantastic. It has just the right amount of signs and posters to explain the history and the context without overdoing it The exhibits are great and the castle and the view around are just stunning. What really impressed me was the amount of restoration was done within a short amount of time (which shows what can be accomplished when there is real will and sponsorship). Thanks so much from making this visit a success

Yelp
We had a great time touring the castle. Definitely try to head towards the top of hill for parking as it is a fairly steep walk. Although tons of cars, it wasn't really that crowded inside the castle. €12 each. Beautifully restored with interesting features! A nice visit when in Alsace region.

Yelp
While you're in Alsace, in between hopping to Vineyards, make sure to take some time to visit the Chateau du Haut-Koenigsbourg. When I visited, it was a foggy and gloomy day down in the valley. My friend and local tour guide assured me that the castle was not to be missed while in Alsace. Game for anything, I was eager to see the place while I was there. We wound up the hill, climbing higher and higher, until finally the fog broke and the castle was visible, like it was floating in the sky. We parked along the side of the road, bought our tickets, and set off on a self-guided tour. There are guided tours available, but so much is explanatory as you walk through. Haut-Koenigsbourg is a perfect example of Alsace itself. Centuries old and overseeing the production of some of the best white wine in the world (no bias here, I assure you!), it was restored meticulously after Alsace was ceded to Germany in the late 19th Century (hence the mashup name that combines both German and French). When Alsace was returned to France after WW2, it was naturally returned to French hands as well. Walk through history and see the transformation for yourself when you spend an afternoon at Haut-Koenigsbourg!

Yelp
We saw this from the highway and followed the brown "attraction" signs all the way here. Parking is along the road leading up. Drive all the way to the top to look for spaces, there were many we passed on our walk. Parking continues on the road if you pass the castle and head down, if you still haven't found a spot just turn left to go back up and start again. The cost here was minimal. You follow the signs through the building. Many things were in English and there was also a pamphlet that talked about the different rooms/areas. This was our first castle visit since moving to the area so I can't speak to this v. other castles, but overall this was worth the stop. Our kids 4 and 6 did well walking through. There is a small gift shop inside and one outside as well with a small area to purchase food if you wish. Bathrooms are free and clean.

Yelp
A gorgeous castle located uphill in the Alsace. This spot is extremely popular so expect crowds during the busy season. Tons of cars and buses arrive daily and you won't find this place quiet or without people. Having said that it has rich history and is undergoing significant renovations and restoration. The view from up above is spectacular and it well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Yelp
We want to go back to the middle age and see a nice princess castle! You are in the right place. The castle make me think of all the Disney movies with princesses I have seen before... Saying this sound a bit "cliché" but it make you dream and that's what make it even better! Normal price of the visit is 9 euros, which is reasonable for a castle that was re-done from top to bottom. If you want to visit it for free, think about going the week end of the "journees du patrimoine" which is in September. The visit can take around 40 minutes if you do it alone. From the top you will have a nice view of the towns around... Perfect landscape especially if you are lucky to have a nice weather (which was not my case) You can also see nice furnitures, not originally from the same castle but at least it give you a view on how things were before. I really enjoy visiting this castle and would recommend if you are around .

Yelp
Gorgeous Castle. Amazing view. A lot of parking space next to the castle. Most important thing here is the view. It is breathtaking. Just look at the panorama shot up close. Glad we went here.

Yelp
Great historic castle! They do have English tours at 2pm daily but we got there at noon and did not wait for it. Now I wish I did. It was a wonderful castle with interesting rooms and there were so many questions that I had when I left. Visit here and check out the monkeys in the morning before you come. The two places are very close and could easily be seen together. This castle was redone by the Germans during their occupation but it looks like they restored much of the castle well...and it makes me want to see the chambers closed off upstairs.

Yelp
My family went to visit the castle Sept '16. We had to park on the steep, winding road to get to the castle. By the time we made it to the site, 3 out of 4 of us needed a rest. By the time we made it to the castle, 3 out of 4 of us didn't continue through the castle. It is more for the physically heathly. I will try to buy a book about Haut-Koenigsbourg for it's history & history
