Château Haut-Brion

My wife and I ended at the Chateau by mistake as we booked a wine tasting at another nearby Chateau with a similar name but all the while intending to come to this location. Luckily we came on slow day and there wasnt any tasting going on so they were willing to accomodate us. Since it was just us, it was a very personal tasting experience and we ended up coming home with a couple of bottles. We knew that this was one of the most renouned Chateau's based on the fact that it was mentioned a few times in the TV show Frasier. I did also notice that the airport had a couple of bottles from the estate for sale but didnt look to see the price or which vintage. At the chateau they have a few vintages for sale so depending on your price point you could get certain years that were better than others. I guess will see if we ever open it or decide to sell it later if the price skyrockets.

Even though Ive accelerated my education on wine in recent years I can say I know still very little about Bordeaux wines. Luckily while eating at a restaurant for a special dinner, the sommelier informs us that one of the other patrons has left them a bottle of 1986 Chareau Haut Brion and would like to share some with us. Holy moly! I dont know who this patron is but they can just afford to leave Haut Brion laying around? So we split a glass and it's certainly one of the more amazing wines I've ever tried. Earthiness and complexity in both the nose and palate are incredible. Im not sure Im wine educated enough to really describe whats truly going on. What is important is I like it and it's fantastic. I shouldnt get too attached though, it might be cheaper to have a drug habit

Day 2 of the wife and my tour of Bordeaux started off with a visit to Château Haut-Brion, a first growth château in the Graves region and the only first growth wine of the Pessac-Léognan appellation. While there, we were able to see the beginning of the harvest of grapes, all by hand, for their white wine. Thankfully, we weren't put to work in the fields for our end of tour tasting! Tours are by appointment only. Our guide, who spoke excellent English, was extremely knowledgeable of the history of Haut-Brion and its winemaking process. Aside from the château itself, which was beautiful, not surprisingly the rest of the facilities were very comparable to every other château we toured. One major difference from the majority of other Bordeaux wine châteaus, though, was that Haut-Brion employed coopers to make their barrels on site. It was interesting to see the barrel-making process. The culmination of our tour was a tasting of the 2007 Haut-Brion and a 2007 La Mission Haut-Brion, beautifully delicious wines in an elegant setting.

This outstanding chateau is located within the city of Bordeaux. Imagine living in an apartment with an overview of the property! The premier wine is outstanding - always buy the vintages you can't afford! The white is amazing, also. Very dry, well worth the price. I avoid their second wine Clarence. Instead, I opt for Ch. La Tour Haut Brion as a slightly less expensive alternative, yet sometimes superior. Pessac Leognan tends to enjoy less media attention and fame than the Medoc region, yet its remarkable chateaux are equally outstanding (Haut-Brion, la Tour Haut-Brion, Haut-Bailly, Domaine de Chevalier, Smith-Haut Lafite, etc.).

We just came back from a tour to the Chateau Haut Brion in Pessac. Its about 30 min from Bordeaux city center. Amazing educating tour. After similar trips to other chateaus, I now know alot about whole wine making process. Really interesting. See my pics. Wine is nice but somehow doesn't live up to its hype.
