Chateau La Cheneviere, a Design Boutique Hotel Port-en-Bessin-Huppain, France

"At Port-en-Bessin, situated between the D-day landing beaches and the town of Bayeux in the heart of historic Normandy, stands the charming 18th century Chateau La Chenevière. The chateau delivers the cosy charm and mannerisms of an old English manor decorated with genuine period furniture and contemporary accessories and fabrics. It also features a plush dining room, overlooking an English-style park, where you can experience the distinctive flavours of Normandy and select from an extensive wine list." - My Boutique Hotel (en)

Chateau La Cheneviere (Port-en-Bessin-Huppain, Normandy) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"On the road that leads from Bayeux to the beach in Normandy, there's an elegant English-style estate with a colorful history. Once a hub for producing hemp to make fishing ropes, the property was later occupied by German officers during World War II. Today, Château La Chenevière is a luxury hotel that embraces the past — the name means “hemp fields,” and the original rooms and walled gardens have been carefully preserved — while offering a range of clever updates. The old glass-roofed conservatory was transformed into a modern bistro with a vegetable-driven menu and garden seating by the pool, and the stables now house sleek guest quarters." - Tablet Hotels

When you think about Normandy and what you imagine it will be, this hotel captures it perfectly. A beautiful chateau in the countryside, but very close to some lovely restaurants, and just a short drive to the D Day beaches. The grounds are beautiful, and the lobby and bar area are small yet lovely. Our room was on the small side, but clean and well decorated. Breakfast was very good. Highly, highly recommend this establishment if you want the true Normandy countryside experience.

We stayed here with my sister and brother-in-law May 20 to May 23, 2025. It was an awesome experience. The rooms are very comfortable and well appointed, the grounds are absolutely gorgeous, and the location is superb for touring the WW2 historical sites. There are two restaurants, one a more traditional set-up with a formal feel ( although the head waiter Françoise certainly knows how to lighten the mood) and the other informal place out by the pool with a wonderfully friendly staff and great food. The meals were excellent, including the breakfasts. They have a nice bar and the front desk staff is very welcoming. Highly recommended and wouldn't hesitate to return.

During our D-Day excursion, we had the unforgettable pleasure of stopping for lunch at Château La Chenevière — and I can honestly say it felt like stepping into a dream. The 17th-century manor is nestled among perfectly manicured gardens and centuries-old trees, with every corner of the property whispering elegance, history, and peace.||||Lunch was exceptional — refined yet relaxed, showcasing local flavors in the most beautiful setting imaginable. Afterward, we had time to walk the grounds, and I was struck by how serene and timeless everything felt. The chateau blends classic French charm with an inviting warmth that made it hard to leave.||||If you’re ever in Normandy, make this place a priority. It’s not just a stop — it’s an experience. From the peaceful gardens to the stunning architecture and thoughtful hospitality,.

So glad we stopped for a night here. The chateau has a rich history and is set in beautiful grounds. Very much a small boutique 5 star hotel. We had a dog friendly room in the main house and we were all well looked after. The Botanist restaurant had excellent quality 1 star Michelin dishes and friendly service. We did not manage to use the pool but it looked lovely! Highly recommend staying here to visit the local war beaches.

The rooms ate 3 stars at the most. Dirty, old. Paint is coming off, rusted lamps, hair dryer with a push button- like in an 1980 motel ... spiders and bugs. Extra blanket that looks from the last centurt, an old safe. Bathroom is cheap and broken. Bed is old and looks bad. See it all in the pics and enlarge them for a closer look. Also room door has no shade so the light from the outside is not letting u sleep. The restaurant served food with no taste, i couldn't believe it's made in France. DON'T SAY YOU WERE NOT WARNED!!

The hotel has large and beautifully kept grounds. The outdoor pool is large. The room we had was good, but not great. The main restaurant has fabulous breakfasts and dinners.

I was thrilled to return to this beautiful property. Besides its physical appeal, the location of the property is its main asset.||It is the perfect base for visiting all the Normandy landing beaches and other military sites.||They had recommended a marvelous guide named Igor from Gold Beach Company who made our experience memorable. I highly recommend him and his, company.||The bedroom was exquisite, the dinner in the gourmet restaurant excellent, and the gardens, magnificent.||The staff is superb and I especially want to mention Giovanni, who gave me so much personal attention. He was most professional and graciousness.||Thank you to all for another superb experience.

My husband and I had a beautiful lunch... Cocktails, wine, fixed price lunch (with upcharge for a Very delicious Lobster roll- I highly recommend!!!). But surprisingly, we were charged 5 euro for a free carafe of water. I think that it is against the law, especially since we ordered other drinks. It is not normal...

Yelp
Beautiful chateau just west of Tours, France. It's not the largest chateau, though it is very large, but what really sets this place apart from the others is its gardens. The largest and most intricate gardens of any of the chateaus in the valley. Some of them are flowers and shrubs, others are fruit-bearing plants, but they're all beautiful. The interior of the chateau, don't get me wrong, is quite nice as well. Several rooms are intricately detailed, but the gardens are the big draw here. A nice touch, there are a couple boutiques where you can buy souvenirs, of course, but one of the boutiques is geared towards gardening, which is very on brand for this chateau. Also nice, you can buy seeds from the gardens for your home garden, very nice touch! If you're planning to travel here and have a home garden, look into your country's laws regarding bringing home seeds as that could be quite the nice souvenir.

Yelp
Stunning property but the staff didnt do ONE extra thing to make it special- it felt lazy and cheaply run. No Chocolates at turndown, No fruit plate or wine upon arrival, No turndown service- Room was messy and unstocked for coffee when I returned From Our 400$ dinner each night. when i asked for coffee service in the am - the same lady said I had a coffee machine in the room- I explained that I wanted to order coffee on a tray with Hot Milk in my room because I was on VACATION! When we arrived there was a lady at The front desk who sort of pointed to us where to park and didnt have anyone to get our luggage!!! I mean - is this supposed to be a luxury Relais and Chateaux? Because it isn't one- lazy and terrible service- A Hilton would be more special- honestly.

Yelp
My husband stayed here recently on a trip to the Normandy region. We cannot recommend the hotel enough. From the moment we arrived, we were treated with such friendly service and made to feel right at home. Upon our arrival we were upgraded to a junior suite in the main house. The room overlooked the exquisite and manicured gardens with floor to ceiling windows. The room was nicely appointed with a large jet tub and rain shower head in the shower. The king size bed was very comfortable. The hotel is tucked away from town and offers a bar, restaurant, and lounge area. The grounds are beautiful and lush with pea gravel pathways. Everything was in bloom and the location itself felt magical. We ate at the restaurant, The Botanist (reviewed separately) twice and really enjoyed it. The hotel offers a very generous and delicious continental breakfast with a variety of patisseries, fruit, yogurt, egg options made to order, breads, cheese, and meats (cured and cooked). The staff were exceedingly gracious and always greeted us with a smile and a Bon Jour or Bon Soir. We would definitely stay here again.

Yelp
Very very good. Wicked expensive but worth it for a special occasion. They brought us lots of things to try beyond what we ordered and we felt the service and warmth from the staff far exceeded our expectations for a couple of grungy-looking Americans. We especially loved the cheese platter (and the charming young man serving the cheese), with the peppered goat cheese being our favorite but not a single loser on the plate. Multi-grain bread was very delicious and the extra brownie thrown in for free was a pleasant way to end the meal. We ended up back there for breakfast in the morning we were so pleased with the food, service and atmosphere. Breakfast also didn't disappoint. Try the apple juice :-) The grounds are spectacular and you should take some time to wander around the property.

Yelp
We stayed here on our honeymoon in 2008 and dined there on more recent trips. The Chateau is very elegant, the staff is marvelously accommodating and the dining room is to die for! Definitely worth your money, though it is expensive.
