Chateau Les Carrasses, Quarante, Languedoc, France - Explore & Book

"Our jaws dropped as we swept up the tree-lined drive, through vineyards bursting with colour, to Château Les Carrasses – a 19th-century castle straight out of a fairytale. And this hideaway comes with a magical tale, too. It was built in 1886, at the height of Languedoc's wine boom, on the foundations of a pilgrimage rest stop. Over a century later it fell into ruin and lay abandoned for many years, before being rescued and completely transformed by Irish owners Karl and Anita. Now, 30 self-catering suites and villas sit within the chateau’s original structure: bathrooms nestle in turrets, 3-bedroom villas occupy the former wine cellars, and the gardener’s cottage is a romantic retreat. Each has private outdoor space and is tastefully decorated with French antiques. There's also a heated infinity pool, a Mediterranean-style restaurant and wonderfully warm staff full of local knowledge. Spend your days playing pétanque under pine trees and visiting Languedoc’s picturesque villages and markets, or drive 30 minutes to glorious sandy beaches. On top of being beautiful, this is one of the warmest regions in France, with over 300 days of sunshine a year. Highs The idyllic rural setting – 150 acres of vineyards, meadow and woodland, and the Pyrenees mountains as a backdrop A relaxed ambiance but luxurious feel Heaven for families with various sizes of accommodation (some have private pools) plus tennis courts, a mini-farm and a kids club in July and August Bikes to borrow; pack a picnic and cycle along the famous Canal du Midi Mealtime flexibility: you can self cater, eat à la carte in the excellent restaurant, grab takeaway pizzas or get meals delivered Lows Other than for the studio apartments, 7-night minimum stay preferred in peak season (July and August); shorter stays may be considered at the hotel’s discretion Don't expect full hotel facilities such as a spa; this is a self-catering property with perks You'll need a car to get here and explore the region Some private gardens are overlooked Popular in peak times so book ahead; if booked up try their sister properties Villas St Pierre de Serjac and Chateau Capitoul" - Emily McDonnell

Absolutely stunning place to stay and the accommodation felt really luxurious (although some of the furniture choices gave me slight terror with our sticky children - cream dining chairs for example!). Lovely facilities. We enjoyed the wine walk and our kids loved the kids club, although it was a bit smaller than some others we have been to. The mini farm and playground were an added bonus. Restaurant food was excellent although quite expensive, so we didn't use it much. What was great was the fact that you can order individual pastries and bread for delivery to your accommodation every morning, at a reasonable price. This was a real bonus for us as it made self-catering a lot more enjoyable without a massive additional expense. There were some minor niggles with information provision/organisation (for example, beds not set up as agreed and some items we had requested and which the hotel had confirmed as being available were not provided when we arrived) but none of these would deter me from visiting again. We plan to visit one of the sister hotels in the future.||The local area is fairly quiet and there weren't a lot of things which appealed to us as a family with young children, but we enjoyed a visit to Roquebrun where you can swim in the river (which was lovely) and we also drove to Sete (about an hour away) to see the St Louis festival which was excellent. We ate out in Capestang (the local town) but wouldn't bother doing so again.

We have just returned from a glorious stay at Chateau Les Carrasses with our daughters (3 and 7). We loved every minute of our stay from the gorgeous self catered accommodation, the stunning and well maintained surroundings and delicious meals at the hotel. Our daughters thoroughly enjoyed the kids club activities including mini farmers and the mini wine maker activities. They have previously been reluctant at other kids clubs but were asking to go each day! The staff were all professional, warm and welcoming. We couldn’t fault and thing and hope to be back again soon!

This is an amazing place.||So relaxing!||Beds are very, very comfy. The villas are very well equipped with everything you could need. We are at the restaurant quite a few times, beautifully fresh and delicious.||Spa treatment was the BEST ever massage. 100% recommend.||Wine walk and wine tasting were both brilliant and even the kids loved the wine walk and grape juice tasting.

We had a lovely time here but the reviews we read before here didn’t tell us as much as I wish we’d known…||Positives:|- beautiful setting|- friendly staff|- amazing kids club programme including pony rides and working on the farm |- brilliant farm, pool and playground for kids; our eight year old daughter was so happy |- food better than the reviews suggested and the BBQ evening especially impressive |- overall a great week and a lovely property ||However:|- the chateau rooms are so loud; it’s an old creeking building where you hear every footstep or door opening - and the restaurant terrace and/ or front door are underneath you; had we known this we’d definitely have gone for a different accommodation as I don’t think these issues apply in the villas |- the chateau rooms also need some love and care; we had issues with things working and plumbing throughout |- in the end I didn’t get one great night’s sleep from noise/ staff clearing up or setting up breakfast; and that’s not ideal |- it’s quite a hands off property - no towels available by the pool (one day they’d run out, another day the staff member said she could get them in an hour as she was busy, another day the dryer had broken), barely any service by the pool, you can drag around your own heavy umbrellas etc; could easily just be made a little easier for guests at times |- breakfast quite poor and small for a high fee; one apple in a fruit bowl was the only fruit available on our first morning but last making fresh omelettes and crepes worked well ||None of this really detracts from our week which was great and our eight year old daughter had an especially lovely time.

We stayed 4 nights for a friends wedding and everything was perfect! The staff go above and beyond to take care of everyone, which is no small feet for a 65 person wedding. ||The bikes on property were well maintained and the connecting trails were one of the highlights of our stay. We did not have kids but the property appeared great for families. We are already plotting our return! ||While you have everything you need on the property, a rental car would be very useful to be able to explore nearby towns.

Just had 4 days at this gorgeous chateau. Not pretentious in anyway. Friendly staff who speak good English. Grounds and pool to die for . The smell of jasmine is intoxicating . Our apartment was beautifully decorating and had everything you need for self|Catering . The surrounding area has excellent restaurants within a 6 mile radius. The Chateau provides good recommendations and will book for you. Just stunning

My sister had her wedding at Chateau des Carasses and it was picture perfect from beginning to end. The BBQ in the woods the night before, the wedding day and the TexMex meal the next night were all excellent. ||||The accommodation is excellent with each room in the chateau having a fully stocked kitchen. The bed was so comfortable, I slept like a dream. ||||The staff went above and beyond for us and every person that help along the way couldn’t do more for us. No request was too big.||||Thank you for making our family wedding one to remember. Highly recommend to any couples for weddings or a stunningly tranquil holiday
