The 6 Best Hotels in Christchurch (Updated 2025)

"West of Hagley Park on the eastern edge of Riccarton, this four-star hotel is surrounded by beautiful gardens and feels incredibly picturesque with architecture that’s a cross between a rustic lodge and a charming mansion. The interior is modern and simply contemporary; rooms are bright and sizable with flat-screen TVs, desks, coffee/tea makers, large bathrooms, and super comfy beds. If you have a vehicle there’s free parking, and the hotel also has a bar and a restaurant (the latter offering a sprawling buffet breakfast), plus a fitness center and an outdoor pool." - Matthew Kepnes

Google
A very comfortable stay. Easy check in and quick with a complimentary tasty cookie. The room spacious, very clean, beautifully appointed and comfortable. Lovely bar and restaurant with friendly staff. Breakfast buffet plentiful. Check out quick and efficient. The gardens are beautiful and location perfect. Highly recommend.

My employer booked this room for me, and I think it was very last minute so that probably caused some of the issues, but I showed up at 11:30 AM and they said my room wouldn't be available until 5pm (i've never heard of a hotel with a 5pm check in???). I show up again at 4:30 and now they say "around 5." My room wasn't available until 6:30pm. The room looks unfinished. Mostly bare walls. Just two sad pillows on the bed. Super awkward layout. The shower is in a dark scary recess. You can't see the TV from the bed. Low ceilings. Only one outlet by the bed. No closet. No desk, just a beat up old table. There's no lamp or even a bedside light switch for the (awful) overhead lights) so if you're in bed, you just have to sit in the dark and can't even watch TV. 😭 The restaurant was very good, the bar had great vibes and the reception staff are very friendly and try to be helpful but this room is really awful. I've stayed in 1 star motels that were nicer looking and more comfortable than this and that's truly not even an exaggeration. Edit: Okay they just brought me a lamp. They really are trying! But still bad. Edit: Okay another edit. They called and apologized offered a new room and were so nice. Also honestly even tho the room was 1-2 star quality, I liked the grounds and bar and restaurant and staff so much that I would totally stay here again. Even with the weird scary room. Everybody else I talked to said they had normal, nice rooms so I think I just got an overflow room since it was at capacity. Changing my star rating. Even tho it was still ridiculous to check in at 6:30 pm and the room was bad.

Google
A great place to stay and enjoy this lovely city! The welcome by the staff has been fantastic and the food and staff in the restaurant is also fantastic! Many thanks to you all! Our room also is so lovely and homely with the living room enjoying views of the gardens and so very pleasant. The bathroom works really well and the king size bed is just like home! Thanks for everything. From the Bonds.

They served a welcoming cookie and drink upon arrival, which was a lovely touch. The room was very clean and the bed was large and comfortable. There’s a beautiful rose garden near the restaurant a perfect place for a morning walk.

Arrived at 12 noon after a long haul flight and although normal check in time is 3pm, my room wasn’t ready until 4-30pm. Drinks vouchers were offered but what I needed urgently was a shower and rest. I gather the room not being available until some considerable period after normal check in time is a regular ongoing occurrence - see other reviews- despite management suggesting they will put it right. Then we tried to get a drink in the bar at 9-45 pm on a Sunday evening but were told we would not be served as the bar closed at 10pm. There was also a lot of noise from other rooms and the car park outside where a large coach party was departing early one morning. When I stay in Christchurch in future I will probably stay at the George instead again. I am sure the Chateau will survive without me and I will survive without it. Too mass market for my liking

Google
Positive: Next to botanical gardens. Rooms are good. The landscaping in the hotel property looks promising (we stayed in winter, but I imagine it is beautiful in summer). Front desk was good. Check in provided warm cookies. Negative: Breakfast and dinner was mediocre. Much better options available all around outside the hotel. The gym is way too small and has too little equipment. Pool was not heated to the point of being usable in winter. Fire alarm was set off by someone at night.

The hotel was an amazing stay in a prime location for Christchurch. I had travelled 52 hours to the hotel and to be greeted with a warm cookie and a room ready was fantastic. The bed was comfortable, and the room clean and immaculate. The only reason the rating is 4 was due to the air conditioning either being too hot or too cold regardless of mid range settings. I felt a draft during my stay and this was related to the larger gap beneath the door and a window in the room which did not adequately seal. These did not severely impact the stay, which was an overall pleasant experience. I would rather give the room experience a 4.8/5 if I could. My next visit to Christchurch will keep the hotel firmly in my options. But, there's more! Breakfast was delicious each day and the option for various eggs was a nice addition. It would be great to offer vegetarian alternatives to the bacon and sausages, but this may be more reflective of New Zealand because I struggled to find vegetarian alternatives in some supermarkets too.

I stayed at Chateau on the Park by Hilton in Christchurch for three nights and really enjoyed it. The hotel was very clean, the staff were friendly and welcoming, and the location was great – close enough to get around easily but still nice and quiet. A comfortable and pleasant stay overall. Would recommend.

Yelp
Chateau on the Park Hilton is a gem for anyone planning a girls' trip or looking for a multi person stay in a fantastic location. Thank goodness for the rare three-bed configuration in a single room, The property is surrounded by beautiful gardens. The breakfast buffet deserves a special shoutout--fried rice on the buffet instantly elevates any morning!

Yelp
I thoroughly enjoyed this hotel right next to the largest park in Christchurch, Hagley Park. Cindy and Chris checked me in and made me feel welcome. I had a beautiful view of the huge garden area from my window. I ate their breakfast buffet both mornings and ate in the Little Red Fox Lounge for dinner on my second night. I walked to everything that I wanted to see and do from this location. I was very comfortable here.

Yelp
The hotel would benefit from renovations - a bit outdated. Good breakfast. The service was fine. Got 1:30pm late check-out. The location is far from the city center.

Yelp
Pros 1. Quiet - got a great night sleep and a comfortable bed. I think this was a lot better than staying downtown in terms of noise. 2. Gardens - Beautiful gardens on the grounds and a beautiful view out of our 1st floor room. 3. Atmosphere - similar to a European cottage, looked like a fairy tale sometimes walking around. 4. Service - Very helpful! Cons 1. Location - it was only a 16 minute walk to the botanical gardens which was not bad but it was a 35 minute walk downtown. So we decided to take an uber back home after it got dark instead of walking back to the hotel. I would recommend staying here for at least one night and maybe another night somewhere downtown if you have 2 nights in Christchurch

Yelp
We stayed here 1 night in December. First, location: the hotel is located a little outside of city centre but near the botanicals gardens. Second, atmosphere: I think the hotel design is supposed to reference a European chateau? The grounds are beautiful with the many plants in bloom in December so the gardens were lush with flowers. We had a king room on the first floor that overlooked gardens and pool. At check-in we were told this was a 'deluxe' upgrade but that only made me wonder what a 'regular' room is like because the king room did not seem to have any special features. There wasn't a bidet in the en-suite bathroom. It would be nice if Hilton would add bidets to guest rooms even if just the handheld feature. Third, service: The front desk personnel acknowledged Hilton Honors elite program status and explained all the benefits that applied. I mentioned ahead of time that we were celebrating our anniversary on this trip and the staff did not acknowledge this or do anything special. The internet was disappointing. It was difficult or impossible to connect at times. We had breakfast at the hotel and the spread was expansive with alot of different options to choose from. Overall, it's a nice hotel and I would likely stay again.

Yelp
Great place to lodge. It's on the park, he he, as the name implies which gives the hotel a nice location for people who like to stroll. The gardens in the park are matchless and with a few km are plenty of restaurants and pubs. The hotel itself is quaint with old fashioned keys and a rustic feel. The food in the restaurant is fine if you don't have the legs or cab money. You can eat well enough.

Yelp
We thought it was great! Although they are still repairing some sections after the earthquake, our room on the third floor was clean, comfortable and spacious with a balcony with a view of the gardens. Would have been nice to have a small bistro table outside though, to enjoy the balcony and views. (Inner courtyard rooms did have tables though.) Short walk to the city centre thru the Botanic Garden. Good location, quiet, easy parking. Nice wines at the bar, but we didn't try the restaurant as we prefer to explore. They have a black&white resident cat, Gary, but we didn't see him the two nights we were there.

Yelp
OMG a disaster! What a disaster this hotel was! They offer a booking service to choose the rooms beforehand! So we used this service booked our rooms! Only to find when we arrived at 3pm (check-in was 2pm) we could not access our rooms because Emirates had booked these rooms for their staff, were checking out at 4pm and then they had to be cleaned!!! Earliest check-in was 5pm!REALLY!! It took 1/2 hour to book phoning from Australia, when they knew they could not accommodate us, this probably happens everyday of the week. A la carte breakfast an absolute disaster as well!

Yelp
Wow! The experience could not have been better. Our family of 7, including 2 kids under 4, checked in about 2 am after a night flight / getting rental car. They greeted us with a smile and cookies. They have a "Make it Right" promise and helped us through some issues (two king singles instead of king, no rollaway) quickly and without any contradictions. They provided some spare toothbrushes when we discovered we left our overnight bag. They had a porter bring over a trolley to help us with our bags on arrival and departure. USB ports in the alarm clock. Windows that open for fresh air. Late checkouts. Friendly staff. Quick check-in and check-out. Lovely rose garden. Lots of thing just made this the best experience. We would stay here again in a heartbeat... until next time!

Yelp
I remember a small room with 2 double beds and dark heavy furniture. The website shows the rooms have been updated since our visit and they don't look so claustrophobic in the photos. Reputedly gorgeous gardens but never saw them. An arrival after dark and rain the day after prevented us from exploring.
