The 6 Best Hotels in Christchurch (Updated 2025)

"West of Hagley Park on the eastern edge of Riccarton, this four-star hotel is surrounded by beautiful gardens and feels incredibly picturesque with architecture that’s a cross between a rustic lodge and a charming mansion. The interior is modern and simply contemporary; rooms are bright and sizable with flat-screen TVs, desks, coffee/tea makers, large bathrooms, and super comfy beds. If you have a vehicle there’s free parking, and the hotel also has a bar and a restaurant (the latter offering a sprawling buffet breakfast), plus a fitness center and an outdoor pool." - Matthew Kepnes

I recently stayed at Chateau on the Park - Christchurch, a DoubleTree by Hilton, for a short trip, and overall, my experience was a mix of positives and negatives. The room was quite nice and comfortable, though it did feel a little dated and could use some refreshing. On the other hand, the lobby and garden areas were beautiful — they really gave the property a charming, relaxing atmosphere. I appreciated the thoughtful gesture of a birthday cake and macarons during my stay, which was a lovely surprise — the macarons were delicious, though the cake itself wasn’t to my taste. The location, however, was a bit inconvenient, with limited access to nearby restaurants or shops. While the hotel is right across from Hagley Park and close to Christchurch Botanic Gardens — a big plus for nature lovers — getting to other parts of the city took some extra effort. As a Gold member, I was disappointed that the complimentary bottled water wasn’t provided in the room. When I asked about it, the staff response made me feel slightly uncomfortable, as if my question wasn’t justified. Another small issue was the breakfast — there were two different types available, which made the process a bit confusing at first. All in all, it’s a property with both strengths and weaknesses: lovely aesthetics and thoughtful gestures, but also a few service and convenience gaps that could be improved.

I just want to say, what a wonderful wonderful stay at the Chateau on the Park I had last night. Was there for work. The service, from arrival to goodbye 👋 and the room, room service and the glorious bath!! I love ❤️ having a bath, was so lovely. 5am walk around Hagley Park at sunrise was amazing 👏 and OMG the food at breakfast 😬😬🤩😋🥰 wow. Best buffet ever INCLUDING veges!! Coffee ☕️ amazing and enjoyed outside in the garden amongst the roses 🌹 😍. And, was a trip down memory lane as in 1982 it was known as the Chateau Regency where I had my first job in the five-star restaurant where I was a waiter and learnt how to delicately pour and twist red wine 🍷. I'll be back, thank you. 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 Mikey

Honestly, after amazing day on the Pacific Coast train from Picton this was shocking. I have booked nice balcony GARDEN view room and i was given an entry car park view. I wanted to cry, i was so misarable and angry at the same time , you have destroyed the New Years Ever for me. The worst day to finish 2025. I had to downgrade my roon to get some kind of garden view. J.hun, the Dm was a very nice lady and very kind and its not her fault and dont dare blaming her but the morning manager who had 0 regards for morality, or most likely like the GM who force the team to false advertise just to make money and sell room that have nothing to do with the pictures advertised is at fault here. Im here for 2 days so will see but so far this is complete disaster. Im to change rooms tomorrow to what i have actually booked so lets see, just dont understand why i have to compromise today and suffer. Shame on you. Dont recommend for someone who wants to relax. Maybe bussiness hotel but nothing to do with laisure. Just having shitty day instead of sipping nice wine on the balcony with view i had paid for....

We are frequent travelers and have stayed at numerous Hilton properties worldwide. As Hilton Honors Diamond Members, we are accustomed to receiving consistent and meaningful recognition of our status. At this property, Diamond benefits were limited. The room upgrade was minimal, and recognition consisted of two chocolates and two complimentary drinks. These drinks were restricted to house beer, house wine, or soft drinks. In addition, the complimentary drinks are served in glass bottles and are not permitted in the pool area, which further limits their practical value. That said, the hotel itself is very good. The location is excellent, the grounds are attractive, and the overall atmosphere of the property is pleasant and well maintained. Diamond Members should be aware that they should not expect substantial elite benefits at this hotel. Compared to other Hilton properties, Diamond recognition here is modest, and we have experienced significantly better status-related treatment elsewhere within the Hilton portfolio.

A great place to stay and enjoy this lovely city! The welcome by the staff has been fantastic and the food and staff in the restaurant is also fantastic! Many thanks to you all! Our room also is so lovely and homely with the living room enjoying views of the gardens and so very pleasant. The bathroom works really well and the king size bed is just like home! Thanks for everything. From the Bonds.

Very nice centrally located hotel. Just next to Hagley park. I was in a suite room and all necessary amenities were provided. Facilities clean and well kept. Gardens and hotel grounds lovely. Hotel is convenient to nearby attractions. There is a shuttle bus to Riccarton mall as well. Front deck staff especially Vicky very friendly and helpful. The warm cookies at checkin was a nice touch. Pity it wasn’t give out daily!

The Chateau has clean rooms a solid breakfast restaurant and a friendly and cozy pub style bar. They also have a pool but i’ve never been as it’s never warm enough when i come to Christchurch. The pillows are good, the shower has great water pressure and the bed is comfortable so it ticks all the major boxes. We had a brief disagreement with one of the managers about charges and the accounts but after a bit of back and forth they did the right thing. To get into town its a easy and nice walk through Hagley Park but there are hotels closer to the main attractions in the CBD. Parking is easy which is a big advantage. Overall I would stay here again when coming to CHC for work.

A very comfortable stay. Easy check in and quick with a complimentary tasty cookie. The room spacious, very clean, beautifully appointed and comfortable. Lovely bar and restaurant with friendly staff. Breakfast buffet plentiful. Check out quick and efficient. The gardens are beautiful and location perfect. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Chateau on the Park Hilton is a gem for anyone planning a girls' trip or looking for a multi person stay in a fantastic location. Thank goodness for the rare three-bed configuration in a single room, The property is surrounded by beautiful gardens. The breakfast buffet deserves a special shoutout--fried rice on the buffet instantly elevates any morning!

Yelp
I thoroughly enjoyed this hotel right next to the largest park in Christchurch, Hagley Park. Cindy and Chris checked me in and made me feel welcome. I had a beautiful view of the huge garden area from my window. I ate their breakfast buffet both mornings and ate in the Little Red Fox Lounge for dinner on my second night. I walked to everything that I wanted to see and do from this location. I was very comfortable here.

Yelp
The hotel would benefit from renovations - a bit outdated. Good breakfast. The service was fine. Got 1:30pm late check-out. The location is far from the city center.

Yelp
Pros 1. Quiet - got a great night sleep and a comfortable bed. I think this was a lot better than staying downtown in terms of noise. 2. Gardens - Beautiful gardens on the grounds and a beautiful view out of our 1st floor room. 3. Atmosphere - similar to a European cottage, looked like a fairy tale sometimes walking around. 4. Service - Very helpful! Cons 1. Location - it was only a 16 minute walk to the botanical gardens which was not bad but it was a 35 minute walk downtown. So we decided to take an uber back home after it got dark instead of walking back to the hotel. I would recommend staying here for at least one night and maybe another night somewhere downtown if you have 2 nights in Christchurch

Yelp
We stayed here 1 night in December. First, location: the hotel is located a little outside of city centre but near the botanicals gardens. Second, atmosphere: I think the hotel design is supposed to reference a European chateau? The grounds are beautiful with the many plants in bloom in December so the gardens were lush with flowers. We had a king room on the first floor that overlooked gardens and pool. At check-in we were told this was a 'deluxe' upgrade but that only made me wonder what a 'regular' room is like because the king room did not seem to have any special features. There wasn't a bidet in the en-suite bathroom. It would be nice if Hilton would add bidets to guest rooms even if just the handheld feature. Third, service: The front desk personnel acknowledged Hilton Honors elite program status and explained all the benefits that applied. I mentioned ahead of time that we were celebrating our anniversary on this trip and the staff did not acknowledge this or do anything special. The internet was disappointing. It was difficult or impossible to connect at times. We had breakfast at the hotel and the spread was expansive with alot of different options to choose from. Overall, it's a nice hotel and I would likely stay again.

Yelp
Great place to lodge. It's on the park, he he, as the name implies which gives the hotel a nice location for people who like to stroll. The gardens in the park are matchless and with a few km are plenty of restaurants and pubs. The hotel itself is quaint with old fashioned keys and a rustic feel. The food in the restaurant is fine if you don't have the legs or cab money. You can eat well enough.

Yelp
We thought it was great! Although they are still repairing some sections after the earthquake, our room on the third floor was clean, comfortable and spacious with a balcony with a view of the gardens. Would have been nice to have a small bistro table outside though, to enjoy the balcony and views. (Inner courtyard rooms did have tables though.) Short walk to the city centre thru the Botanic Garden. Good location, quiet, easy parking. Nice wines at the bar, but we didn't try the restaurant as we prefer to explore. They have a black&white resident cat, Gary, but we didn't see him the two nights we were there.

Yelp
OMG a disaster! What a disaster this hotel was! They offer a booking service to choose the rooms beforehand! So we used this service booked our rooms! Only to find when we arrived at 3pm (check-in was 2pm) we could not access our rooms because Emirates had booked these rooms for their staff, were checking out at 4pm and then they had to be cleaned!!! Earliest check-in was 5pm!REALLY!! It took 1/2 hour to book phoning from Australia, when they knew they could not accommodate us, this probably happens everyday of the week. A la carte breakfast an absolute disaster as well!

Yelp
Wow! The experience could not have been better. Our family of 7, including 2 kids under 4, checked in about 2 am after a night flight / getting rental car. They greeted us with a smile and cookies. They have a "Make it Right" promise and helped us through some issues (two king singles instead of king, no rollaway) quickly and without any contradictions. They provided some spare toothbrushes when we discovered we left our overnight bag. They had a porter bring over a trolley to help us with our bags on arrival and departure. USB ports in the alarm clock. Windows that open for fresh air. Late checkouts. Friendly staff. Quick check-in and check-out. Lovely rose garden. Lots of thing just made this the best experience. We would stay here again in a heartbeat... until next time!

Yelp
I remember a small room with 2 double beds and dark heavy furniture. The website shows the rooms have been updated since our visit and they don't look so claustrophobic in the photos. Reputedly gorgeous gardens but never saw them. An arrival after dark and rain the day after prevented us from exploring.
