Newly Engaged? These Hotels Come With Centuries-Old Churches | Vogue

"As far as wedding destinations go, it doesn’t get much more idyllic than the French Riviera. At Château Saint-Martin & Spa in Vence, an air of history hangs over the property’s 32 acres. The château was originally a fortified structure during Roman times, and later a stronghold for the Knights Templar in the 12th century. Also on property is a restored chapel that dates to the 1100s, but features a contemporary mural by artist Erick Lfergan called the “Tree of Life.”" - Nicole Kliest

7 Destinations in Europe You Wouldn't Think to Visit (but Really Should)

"But if you want to go off the grid? Head 45 minutes east of Cannes to find Vence, a small commune in the hills of the Alpes Maritimes. You might want to speak French, or at least attempt, when you pull into to this town, which is known for its landscape and the luxury destination spa at the Chateau Saint-Martin & Spa." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Château Saint-Martin (Vence, French Riviera / Provence) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"It takes something special for a hotel to stand out in so storied a destination as the south of France, but the Château Saint-Martin & Spa is nothing if not unique. Here, on a hilltop overlooking Vence, is a site that was once a Roman fortification, later a Knights Templar commandery, and now — after substantial improvements by its new owners, the Oetker Collection — one of very few château-style hotels in Provence, offering a degree of luxe seclusion that the grand hotels in the seaside towns can’t hope to match." - Tablet Hotels

We visited the hotel to celebrate a birthday and were delighted with every aspect of our stay. From the moment we arrived at this beautiful property (in a tiny rental car) we were made to feel entirely special. Staff were welcoming, efficient and charming. We had been upgraded to a room with superb views over the hills. We enjoyed the beautiful pool area, the spa and enjoyed the chef’s tasting menu for dinner. The breakfast buffet was excellent. Staff were extremely obliging - helping us with walking routes and providing details and samples of the jam we had enjoyed at breakfast. |We have stayed at many good hotels all over the world, but what impressed us particularly about Chateau Saint Martin was the service. We would 100% recommend the hotel to friends looking for an indulgent break in a beautiful setting. Thank you for a superb stay.

Google
Beautiful property and great service. We had a very roomy suite which offered panoramic views of Vence. The reason I took out one star from its location is that it is somewhat isolated being on the hilltop (but it is not a negative) and commuting to other towns took a little more time. The dinner was a tad disappointing as the dishes were ordinary and the tables are crammed to each other. The food at the bar was better.

It is the most lovely location and the place could not be more welcoming. The staff go out of their way to make your stay memorable. In particular, Diego, who was looking after us on our last dinner on the terrace. He was amazingly attentive and listened to what we wanted. He got the kitchen to prepare a wonderful sharing dinner. Diego helped to make it a memorable family evening.

This place is a Dream! This property, the service, the food...everything about this resort is amazing. We only wished we were able to end our trip here - it would have been the perfect spot to end our trip to France with a little R&R. We were able to stay only 2 nights due to our schedule and privatization of the hotel, but I could have easily stayed longer!! We often don't eat at on-site hotel restaurants for dinner so we can explore the surrounding towns. The restaurant at this hotel is an Exception! It was THE BEST DINNER during our 2 week trip to France. Some of our favorites were soaking in the magnificent view from our balconies, the amazing breakfast on the outdoor terrace, and the dreamy jacuzzi by the spa. Thank you, Chateau Saint-Martin, for your wonderful hospitality during our stay.

This was our third (or fourth) stay at the beautiful Château Saint-Martin & Spa. In fact, we’ve been coming here for years — initially to dine at their wonderful restaurant while renting a nearby house when our children were younger.||Now that the kids are grown and out of the house, we can finally treat ourselves to staying at the hotel, not just dining there.||The property is truly stunning. The service is excellent — professional but not overly formal — and the view over Vence and the coastline is simply breathtaking.||This year, we arrived at the end of July and noticed it was slightly busier than usual. We had just come from a quiet retreat in the Tuscan hills, a place with only 15 rooms and no children allowed, so arriving to a livelier atmosphere — with more families and little ones around — was a bit of a shift. The pool area was a bit noisier and more active, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It just took a moment to adjust after 10 days of near silence.||Let’s be honest: people-watching and a bit of gossip are all part of the fun when staying somewhere like this.||We’ll definitely be back — again, and again, and again…

Upon arriving high up in the hills to this beautiful Chateau, we could see the beauty and perfectly manicured grounds. It's spectacular. The concierge came to us and chatted. He was quite lovely, and he told us that housekeeping was already in our room, and the room should be ready before normal check-in at 3. We arrived at 11 AM. They showed us around a bit and then showed us to the pool to hang out while we waited for our room. The pool was fairly empty and would have been relaxing if it wasn't for this young woman who was speaking very loudly on the phone, very rude. ||I did hear one of the young male employees at the pool bar laughing with a colleague, saying, "Stupid American". I don't know who he was speaking about (maybe us?), but it was clear as day and quite shocking to say the least. ||There is a Spanish-speaking woman at the pool who was lovely, and the next day, some of the different young men were kind. ||The pool was just ok, a lot of kids (not an adult-only hotel, so not anyone's fault), but I do think they should keep young children out of the hot tub. We rather relax in our own pool.||We had lunch in the garden; it looked beautiful, but there were so many bugs, and the wait staff at the Garden are all quite young and seem to have no idea what they are doing. No one comes to check on you, absolutely not 5 star service, not even 3-star. I understand the season just started but they need a lot of work!||By this point, it was 2:00, so we assumed, since housekeeping was in there at 11 (as the man who checked us in said), our room should be ready. He told us it wasn't, just sit somewhere. We sat outside for a bit, then went back at 3:00. The room is still not ready. I had asked if it takes 4 hours to clean our room. (he was lying about that when we checked in) He said he would send us a bottle of wine to our room, so we waited and then finally at 3:15, we were led to our room. It was beautiful with a beautiful view and a small balcony for 2 chairs and a table. ||The spa was nice, everyone was lovely there, we had foot reflexology, and massages. My husband loved his massage so much, he wanted to take the massage therapist home. HA!||We decided to have a casual dinner at the bar. We sat outside of the restaurant on the side and ordered drinks and some little bites. The waitress out there has NO personality and is not very pleasant. There was no music, and it was a bit boring. We should have gone to town. ||The breakfast was great! They had a lot to offer, the pastries and croissants were decadent. Great service for the first morning. The second morning, we had to leave early, so we went for breakfast at 7:15 (they open at 7). No one is there but 2 chefs preparing to make eggs. We walk in, nothing, (they saw us come in), we sit and wait, nothing. Finally, my husband goes inside to tell the chefs who were ignoring us to please get someone to serve us; they looked very bothered. My husband ordered eggs, and they didn't see me behind him about to order (we had to order right from the chefs) because no one was checking on us. The chef was clearly laughing at my husband, and then saw me there, and looked guilty. Second time this happened at this supposedly 5-star chateau, unacceptable!!! ||As beautiful as the grounds are, we wouldn't go back there. Most of the staff are rude, unqualified and rarely smile. The man who was so kind to us, checking us in and showing us around, walked passed us and didn't even smile when we passed him in the hall.||We did love housekeeping, both women we saw were very kind and lovely, maybe they can teach the staff a few things!

We stayed here as a couple for 4 nights and absolutely loved everything. The service was outstanding, the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, and the room was spotless and very comfortable. The food was delicious — beautifully presented and full of flavor, with very attentive service. The entire hotel is well-maintained, peaceful, and has all the amenities you need for a relaxing stay. We didn’t try the spa or massage services, and honestly regret not doing so — they looked amazing. Excellent value for money. One of the best hotel experiences we've had in years. Huge thanks to the entire hotel team for their amazing work — we truly appreciated it. Highly recommended!

Yelp
It is a pitiful culinary experience in a gorgeous location! We tried their "gourmet" restaurant Le St Martin as well as L'oliveraie. Not only once but twice each just because we wanted to give it a second chance. Both have a very good service. Le St Martin is a classy restaurant with a gorgeous view. L'oliveraie is just a lovely outdoor brunch/lunch restaurant. The only problem is that the food is just terrible! At the gastro, nothing original in the menu to begin with. Nice wine selection though! Totally NOT impressed with their "mise en bouche" (veggie soup) and their beef fillet was everything but a fillet. Hard and barely edible. So let's not call this a gastro anymore please or less they change the chef! As per L'oliveraie, every dish was a disaster. I thought it would be hard to mess up a club sandwich but yes, they managed to ruin this as well! I would advise the group to really think about hiring a good chef that knows what he's doing because even in a such gorgeous place, people would easily run away or simply never go back. This is in France, one of the best cuisine in the world. C'mon!

Yelp
Absolutely opulent! That chateau is so beautiful and peaceful. Jaw dropping views. The staff is so very helpful. They spoil you! Nothing is too much to ask for. Would come back here again and again. Our suite was beautiful and very luxurious.

Yelp
A mind-numbingly expensive place with a commanding view over the town. Quite magnificent though! We were lucky enough to be ungraded to a suite and were treated, and felt, like royalty! The main restaurant is a gourmet's paradise, and the staff almost too attentive even a little table for my wife's handbag!

Yelp
How about a 6 star category for outstanding accommodations, location, service and food. I'm not sure it gets any better than this.

Yelp
The main feature of the property is its spectacular view and I booked my stay through the Fine Hotels and Resorts Program offered by Amex for Platinum cardholders as one of the benefits was a room upgrade. When we arrived, the receptionist took us unnecessarily to the second floor before making us go back down to the first floor and taking us to a room that had a view of plants hiding the rest of the terrace. We had been "upgraded" into what she later described as an handicapped room. What a disappointment! I talked to Anais, the manager on duty and although they had rooms with views available, she would not bulge and required us to pay extra. We had just spent a couple days at the Carlton in Cannes where we experienced spectacular service from the heart. What a night and day with our experience at CSM. After my stay, I contacted the General Manager as I always make the effort to find a solution with management. I just experienced the same cold, arrogant and disingenuous attitude, only taken to the next level. BTW, there was another guest that was experiencing an issue that same night and ended up leaving the property. Two parties at a small supposedly high-end property experiencing major issues on a single night, that speaks volume. Boy, did I regret leaving the Coast to come up there. I will not be making that mistake again.
