The Best Places to Eat in 2026 | Condé Nast Traveler

"In Harris Park’s Little India, this alcohol-free, no-reservations diner dazzles with Bombay street food so vibrant some diners don’t even notice it’s entirely meat-free." - Megan Spurrell, Arati Menon

I ordered the dabeli pav at ChatKatz for $8+tax. The pav they used was very good and not the typical hard grocery store and was closer to the Hot Breads feel. While my dish had the standard base flavor of a dabeli pav, the filling was drippy instead of being more firm. It was basically falling out the back as you bit into it. It also had way too much garam masala and garlic. Even hours after eating the dabeli pav, I had a lingering garlic-y aftertaste in my mouth. I also looked at other tables that had ordered the kathiyawadi thali and it looked quite disappointing - including the phulka which did not resemble the typical Gujarati style in terms of thinness. For dabeli pav, my favorite continues to be Hot Breads in Edison (other locations are franchisees and terrible) and for Gujarati thali in the same Edison area, I would rather go to Khushboo (call ahead as they are closed sometimes) which is across from Hot Breads. If you want the absolute Gujarati and Kathiyawadi thalis - then Kathiyawadi Kitchen in Sayerville is the top place in Jersey. Be prepared to wait as there are no reservation and the restaurant is packed with 1-1.5 hours wait at certain times.

Google
Snacks are the best here… specially people from Mumbai… we took Vadapao & Samosas… they’re awesome… common sitting area sometimes makes it’s difficult hear the call when you’re food is ready … parking available… no free water… better to carry some

We drove long way to this place. And when we found this type of food court. it was quiet shocking. They have done a great effort to make such a theme. Since it is over crowded probably they have to look for a bigger place. Coming to the chatkaz, we had dal bati, which was awesome unfortunately the guju thali had some issues, one of the subzi was spoiled they immediately replaced the second one, but then i cancelled the order.... thanks guys! But need to improve in hygiene factor alone.

Google
Go with no expectations. Below average food quality. Staff and owner are even worse. Food is definitely not worth the price.

Google
We have been their regular customer for about more than 8 years. Last weekend I recommended my friends to order from them for our Diwali party. There was a mis-match in one item in order, and the person who took order was adamant that they sent the right item. So it was a classic example of he said she said. I was expecting a higher level of customer service because we order from them regularly. But given that the party had already started we just ordered a new item again. I had to send someone to pick the item and the item (kadi pakora) that was sent wasn’t good quality. No one ended up eating it. The whole experience was very upsetting. I tried to go talk to him today but he wasn’t in the restaurant. At this point, just going to leave it that they lost me as a customer. My recommendation to all is be sure before paying to pickup what u order. The sad part is such people get away with it even though they are in the service industry. I have recommended them to so many people and now they lost those customers too.

Yelp
It was perhaps not the best dal baati churma I had ever tasted, but it's also the only place anywhere in the NY region I can find serving the dish, so they get extra points from me for that. I felt they could have been a bit more generous with portioning ghee over the baatis, but the Rajasthani style dal was nice. It seems they instead put all of the ghee on the churma, which was very heavy. I also wish they also had more Kathiawadi/Rajasthani style dishes to go with the dish like gatte ki sabji. Actually the best item we tried was the pav bhaji. The pav was perfectly soft and buttered, and I would venture to guess that the misal pav here is excellent too.

Yelp
Was surprised to come across this .. had gone looking for indo Chinese when we got tempted to try out some chat We just had a couple of items Mirchi bajji.. worth every cent .. they diced it up nicely into bite sized pieces and gave it some twist with chaat masala as well .. papri chaat was fresh and tasty .. The lady at the counter was extremely sweet as well .. we had by mistake ordered a papri khichadi kind of thing .. and she was helpful in offering to replace it with the chaat .. which is what we really wanted ...

Yelp
Reasonable and fast. Choice of two vegetable plus roti daal, one sweet gulab jamun papadam rice and snack Worth it for hungry persons. Gujarati taste

Yelp
Man burning hot, my nose and eyes starting flowing like Atlantic ocean. Damn spicy please make sure when you order you mention medium spicy. I felt like ordered from South Indian restaurant not Gujarati restaurant I tried dabeli (extremely spicy) , misal pav lilva kachodi and tiffin box. Everything was as per price. Would not prefer to order another time Please consider your spicy level

Yelp
Ordered "Dakor naa Gotaa", the counter person must have heard "Dabeli". When given the Dabeli, mentioned that we order the Gotaa. The person insisted that we ordered Dabeli, and said we will have to pay for the Gotaa if we wanted it. Needless to say, we will not be visiting the place again.

Yelp
This food stall is part of Flavors Junction. This one specifically serves Gujarati food. I wanted comfort food and opted for the khichu which is made of rice flour. It was good but not like what I am used too at home. The samosa chaat was ok. While I am not a fan of vada pavs this place is known to make a good one. The methi gotas I heard were good too and freshly made.

Yelp
This place is a hit or miss. Most of the times, it is good. The food is fresh and it is on the spicier end. The pav bhaji, dabeli, vagharelo rotlo and Daal Baati Churma are all time favorites. The food comes out sizzling hot. Once we had the microwaved food, the watery part hot and the solid part cold.

Yelp
Barely acceptable food quality. Food's cheap but you get what you pay for. Don't recommend to anyone.

Yelp
The food here is awesome if you are craving for authentic Gujarati dishes or road side snacks. I do agree that sometimes very rarely Food doesn't turn out to be as good as before but most of the times it's always fresh and tastes awesome. Kathiyawadi thali, undhiyu, vada pav, bajri no rotlo, papdi no lot, thepla are few of my fav dishes here. The only downside to this place is the location. If you are too particular about hygiene and cleanliness then I wouldn't recommend this place for dine in but take out for sure. Lets see when my cravings call me for this awesomeness!

Yelp
Being Gujarat always craved for "Dal Baati churma" looked up many places and finally found this authentic Gujarati place meeting my expectations. Do try other veg, Jain and non-veg dishes

Yelp
Lots of variety to choose from and when you are starved for Indian food then it really confuses you! We ordered Usal Pav and Vada Pav. It was tasty and spicy & I needed some sweet to calm down my taste buds. Ordered Basundi and it is YUM! The portion size is big so order fewer items and share!

Yelp
Absolutely horrible service ! The lady who picks up and takes orders should be thrown out . Extremely rude and arrogant . Businesses like these should shut down . They seriously need a lesson or two in customer service .

Yelp
Very bad food and bad service. Ordered Dahiwada which took 20 mins and it was hard and uncooked.

Aditya D.

Yelp
I am surprised this place only has 12 reviews. This place and rajdhani on oak tree are the most authentic gujrati and rajasthani food restaurants in the area. Chatkaz also has vegetables to go. This is more like home made vegetables and are not oily (basically something u can pickup if ur bored of cooking) I pickup rotis from here almost every week. They people who work here are also very friendly.

Yelp
The food is OK the fraud is not. I'm on vacation and used my credit card for payment. In a few hours I had notifications from my bank on fraud and that my card was being used to by stuff online. I use this card when traveling and have a travel alert so they caught it fast. Absolutely not cool to scam credit cards. I am reporting them to the better business bureau but recommend you don't patronize this place till he apologies for the scam and sees that it doesn't happen again. If I have an update on apology/corrective measures taken, I will post it here.

Yelp
So my work orders from here 2-3 times a week. I personally am appalled by the low quality of the food, as well as the bad customer service. We order at a minimum $60 of food during each transaction, and yet it seems that the owner of this stall does not appreciate the business received. For example, whenever we ask for food to be not spicy, it is somehow always provided at the highest spice level. The food is also incredibly oily, and I would say that the conditions of this stall at unsanitary (i.e. I have food hair in my naan and other dishes). Also, the owners seem to arbitrarily decide what they can and cannot make. Their menus say one thing, but when you request the item, they refuse to make it or say that portion is closed. In addition, items are often forgotten when delivered. They have frequently forgotten items, and have never offered to either come back with the item or provide compensation towards our next transaction. I've definitely stopped eating food from here, and I will not be surprised if this place closes down really soon.

Yelp
Awesome Kathiyawadi Thali! I liked the food court in general. The north Indian Thali was also good

Bhumit P.

Yelp
We were waiting for 35+ minutes for 2 dishes wondering what was going on so we had to get up and confront them about it. The guy running the counter looked around confused and then noticed he didn't put the ticket up and they didn't start cooking it. All we got was a half-hearted sorry and had to wait for more than 25 more minutes. Ridiculous.

Yelp
I've been here enough times to right this review. Their food has more of home cooked taste which is good when it comes to Gujarati food. I used to pick up tiffins (pre portion meals to go) from here. First tiffin, eggplant and potatoes tasted spoiled. I didnt say anything and gave them benefit of doubt. When I went for second one I mentioned it to them and told them to make sure everything i was ordering was freshly made so no issues at that time. Third tiffin, cauliflower and potatoes tasted spoiled. I called right away since 2 other family members couldn't eat it either. They said sorry and offered 2 free tiffin next day, which had no issues and were good. Then fifth and last time, daal was spoiled. I called them and they refused to acknowledge it was going bad. Why would a customer call if everything was ok? After all these chances. Its best to stay away from that place. I haven't gone there and wont ever go there. From what I found out, they boil a large batch of potatoes and use them for different shaak (curries) for next few days so anything with potatoes I would definitely stay away. If you order Gujarati thaali, you will be gambling with your health.

Yelp
So many options!!!! I'm a total noob so I peered over the counter and saw some delicious looking sandwiches sizzling on the cooktop. I needed one. The wonderous creation was a dabeli - a sandwich with potatoes, masala spice, peanuts, pomegranate seeds, and all other sorts of crunchy and tasty bits. Sweet. Spicy. Salty.... Can't wait to go back to try more and more.

Prachi P.

Yelp
Horrible customer service. Horrible food. Never had such awful food in my life. The food is hot, served well, but usually under/overcooked, very oily, the dal dhokli is ATROCIOUS, dal bati churma was very dry, puri bhaji puri is very oily and its basically boiled potatoes. I'd avoid this place at all costs. IT SUCKS

Yelp
Best gujju food in town. The undhiyu is super delicious... Vaghareli khichadi and kadhi was good.. Kathiyawadi thali is a bit expensive but was good. They also sell theplas which are good. Though havent tried personally .. Have heard the dabeli is good too.

Domino R.

Yelp
Was at Kumar Soni Plaza - looks like this restaurant is gone!!! No one thereafter counter. Chinese restaurant next to it is there and exceptional Food had detonated in quality and price at Charles and the two other places they own here and prices kept getting higher. Tried Talk of the town and egg o mania instead if this place and both were superb and better quality. No wonder this place is out of business.

VK I.

Yelp
I regularly order the undhiyu, spinach daal, rotis, and methi tepla for take-out from here. Never have been disappointed with the quality.

Purvesh D.

Yelp
Great food authentic Gujarati Indian dishes. Decent pricing. They also offer home delivery of order above 25$. Was certainly not disappointed. The location of the eatery is not very convenient but the food and the variety trumps it all.

Nandhini B.

Yelp
Not going there anymore. Ordered food 2hrs before pickup time and had to wait there for more than an hour both times. Completely chaotic and not organized. Not worth the effort.
