10 restaurants to celebrate the festive season in Singapore - SilverKris

"Showcasing iconic local flavours in a celebratory set menu, this hotel restaurant’s New Year offering begins with appetisers like sweet-and-sour cherry tomatoes with pickled cucumbers, a mini set of chicken satay, kueh pie tee and lemon-butter prawns accompanied by a bowl of bak kut teh. Mains highlight the famed Mandarin chicken rice or a seafood Hokkien mee, both paired with a sharing portion of stir-fried garoupa fillet, and the meal concludes with a decadent pandan cake served with gelato." - Dinesh Ajith

We had a family gathering and birthday celebration at Chatterbox, and the experience was excellent from start to finish. The food was consistently very good — we especially enjoyed the rojak, satay, laksa, chilli prawns, and beef hor fun. Everything was flavourful and well executed, and the dishes were perfect for sharing. Service was also a standout. One of the waiters, Leslie, was particularly impressive — he gave thoughtful food recommendations, was very attentive to details throughout the meal, and maintained a warm, positive attitude that really enhanced the experience. He made our celebration feel special without being intrusive. Overall, a wonderful dining experience with great food and genuinely good service.

It was a great experience! We went for the chicken rice for a good cause - part of the proceeds goes to selected charity beneficiaries. We left with a full tummy and warm hearts. Food was great! Chicken was tender, soft and juicy! Hokkien mee was superb with wok hei and lots of fresh seafood! Service was great too! Crew was attentive and kind! Din manage to catch the names but kudos to them! Thanks!

Finally tried this “atas-looking” chicken rice place that’s been reviewed all over, and I can see why it gets so much attention. The presentation is really on point — everything is nicely displayed and very presentable. It definitely feels more premium compared to your usual chicken rice stall, and all the sauces you’d expect for chicken rice are provided, which is a nice touch. The chicken itself was very tender and nicely done. The cucumbers were also different from the usual — not those thin, watery slices you normally get, but chunkier pieces that actually had a good bite. Small detail, but appreciated. The rice was okay for me. It was nicely cooked, fluffy, and not oily, but I was expecting it to be more fragrant. Not bad at all, just didn’t quite hit that super aromatic chicken-rice level. The soup was a bit unusual though — it had some vegetable shreds in it, which made it feel more like a light vegetable soup rather than the traditional clear chicken rice soup. Personally found that a little odd. Overall, still a solid chicken rice experience. The taste is good, and the presentation and environment really elevate the whole meal. Definitely a nice place to bring overseas guests if you want to impress them with a more polished, comfortable setting while introducing them to local food. 🍗🍚

Google
One of the most must-try restaurants in Singapore for local and tourists. Chicken rice down here is just famous that everybody would like to taste at least once. It’s juicy and crispy melting in your mouth. The rice is just as good. One more interesting dish is the Lobster Laksa!! This is an unbelievable tasty Laksa I’ve ever eaten. Bukkute is just nice. Their signature dessert which is singapore sweet is so rich and thick in taste. The last order will normally end at 9.45pm. I recommend you to make a prior reservation thru website or else you need to come early for walking queue.

Google
Great food, service and atmosphere! Good for business meetings or just family dinner. Shout out to mikk for the awesome food, dessert and cocktail recommendations. Chicken rice was delicious as we had 3 dips to enjoy our tender chicken in. Sambal squid was surprisingly good too. Ended our dinner with a refreshing coconut ice cream - will recommend. Overall a great experience will come back👍🏼

Google
Holy Moly what a great dinner! There’s no way it’s only rated 4.1!!! All the dishes are delish. All the dishes are delish. I repeat. Chicken rice is as good as it should be. Bah Ku Teh tastes wayyy less oily than Song Fa’s or any popular stalls out there. The laksa is so so so creamy and flavorful, i think it’d be my fancy favorite besides an everyday one at Katong laksa. Even the rojak here had me getting my chopsticks back to the plate all the time though i thought I never liked the dish. And the chendol??? Best chendol ever with zero doubt!! The guala malacca they use is really yumm, I devoured the whole bowl within like 2min. It may not be the most authentic or nostalgic Singaporean restaurant. But to a foreigner like me who’d like to think she’s visited a good number of local stalls, I’d still really recommend both local ppl and visiting ppl to come, for a feast of Singaporean food that’s pure delight. (Yes that’s how good this place is 😋)

This is definitely the place to bring someone who can’t handle the grungy-ness of hawker centers but is keen on trying Malaysian/singaporean food. Every dish were well cooked with balanced flavours. The chicken rice was ok as it wasn’t one of the best I’ve had. All dishes were presented cleanly and service was very attentive. Very comfortable setting and environment wasnt loud so you can converse with ease.

Google
5/5 stars for Chatterbox at Hilton Orchard Singapore! My dining experience was truly exceptional. I opted for the premium set meal and it was the perfect way to enjoy their elevated local cuisine. Every course, particularly the local dishes, was magnificent. I was so impressed not only with the authentic flavour but also the impeccable presentation, each plate was a work of art. The cooking execution was flawless; everything was perfectly tender and seasoned. The accompanying red wine pairing was thoughtfully selected and complemented the rich flavors of the food beautifully. Chatterbox successfully elevates Singaporean favorites into a luxurious culinary journey. Highly recommended for a special occasion!

Yelp
Today was my 2nd visit this year. Okay, but it was not my 2nd time dining here. I first came here when I was a wee child. Exactly how old, I really could not remember. Just know that Chatterbox was used to be on the first floor and the hotel was still Mandarin Singapore. After Hilton took over the hotel last year and after an extensive renovation, the Chatterbox today was modern and beautiful. Today I came with a friend whom I knew lately through Yelp! It started off with Deb reaching out to me since she would be coming to Singapore with her mom and her sister. I guess she was so surprised I replied her message and said I would be more than happy to make some suggestions on places to eat. Honestly I did not think it was a big deal. We both met up the day before and she actually said I looked so much older in my pics on Yelp. Sob!! :~( But she went on and said I was the best looking person on this island since they arrived last week. Hahaha!! I told her she needed to see an eye doctor. Deb, I hope you would read this review :D I had made reservation weeks ago which I would suggest when one has a group. I would not mind sitting on the high table if it is just me or with one more person. Since Deb has her elderly mother on this trip, we definitely need a standard table. It was fun eating with Deb and her family. I would usually order just one main but Deb would order a few items to share. Because of that, I got the opportunity to try a few different mains which I normally would not order. Unfortunately I concluded the local food in Singapore did not align with Deb and her family flavor profile. They felt the lobster laksa (sorry no pic), seafood hokkien noodles and chicken rice were not flavorful. As a local, I thought they were all really good. The chicken rice was obviously the selling point of Chatterbox and my favorite here. The lobster laksa was an elevated laksa. I thought the laksa gravy was definitely legit but felt the lobster version was a bit much and such a waste to cook in laksa. The seafood hokkien noodles was definitely flavorful but I felt it was a bit heavy for me. I tried a piece of chicken satay. That would be a 5/5 satay. The chicken meat was tender and the peanut sauce was so good. Yes, I tried to be very careful as I suspected I may have some nut allergy going on. FOOD 4/5 So here's my take on the food: Mandarin Chicken Rice - 5/5 (comes with a bowl of rice, 1/4 chicken and soup plus condiments) Satay - 5/5 Lobster Laksa - 4/5 Seafood Hokkien Noodles - 4/5 We had the home made Osmanthus Oolong tea which was a little sparkling and pretty nice. AMBIENCE 5/5 It was modern and love the green menu. The green accent throughout the restaurant was pretty. The restaurant was always packed when I was there. SERVICE 5/5 Service was always good. The staffs made good recommendation too. I never get to eat the dessert here but hope one day I would get to try it. I may need to find someone to eat with and the person can help me eat a bit of my food so I have room for dessert. I hardly eat dinner with anyone anymore, though I do enjoying dining alone. I really had a great time today dining with fellow yelper aka my new friend & her family. Thanks Debbie and I will see you in SF this summer! :)

Yelp
Make a reservation on Chope at least two weeks in advance if you want to dine at a reasonable hour on the weekends. *Tip: Chope is offering a 10% off voucher if you would like to buy a gift certificate ahead of time. I believe Hilton members also get a discount (as it is located inside Hilton Orchard). I love the beautiful interior of Chatterbox. The remodeled restaurant is very elegant and classy. The seats are well spaced-out and I always feel comfortable when dining here. There are bar seats, sofa couches, private dining rooms, etc. We started with the Grilled Satay appetizer ($16). There were 6 skewers of smoky-flavored, charcoal-grilled chicken and beef. The peanut sauce dip was sweet and savory! Chatterbox has been serving their signature Mandarin Chicken Rice set ($25) since 1971. The boneless chicken is incredibly tender, juicy, and flavorful. The set comes with a warm aromatic soup and broth-cooked jasmine rice. I enjoyed dipping my chicken in the homemade signature chili sauce and ginger puree. The service was fantastic. I had mentioned in my reservation notes that we were celebrating an anniversary and Chatterbox surprised us with a delicious and soft pandan chiffon cake for dessert. I would highly recommend trying out Chatterbox for a weekday/weekend lunch.

Yelp
i was in the area so i stopped in without a reservation around 6pm both nights. i ate here two nights in a row. the restaurant sits you at a high table for people without reservations. the place is modern, comfortable, and elegant. the first night i ordered the hainanese chicken rice dish, followed by the stingray, and finished with the dessert. a nice ice cream and cake in the local flavor. the first bit of the chicken was dry and i was severely disappointed. i moved on to the next piece, then realized i had the best bite of chicken in my life. the dry piece was the end piece; ok fine, not ideal but i get it. stingray came next and it was the first time i had this fish. light fluffy tender and moist. the meat was delicious. the flavor was spicy, tangy, filled with herbs. i was more interested in the fish as i never had it before so i pushed most of the flavor toppings to the side. the dessert was pendan cake and pandan gelato. the cake was moist. the ice cream was smooth and silky. however, i think a lot of additives were mixed in. the ice cream didn't melt, it wasn't very cold at room temp. the second night i ordered the kampong nasi goreng because i saw it nearby the night before. the food was good. everything was cooked right. but it wasn't my flavor profile. i did like the variety on the plate. i paired it with a cocktail. i didn't want the level of sugar so i asked for carbonated water instead of tonic. i finished the meal with a chendol. it was very light, not super sweet which is the way i like it, and the shaved ice was nice as it was a hot muggy day. i would definitely stop in again next time i'm in the area.

Yelp
Food is far from satisfactory but with this environment and location I guess it's ok to charge such price

Yelp
The foods tasted great I gave 4.5. The staff provide excellent service to the customer and even very busy. There a waitress named Miss New very patient and gave a very sweet smile to the customer. I was very impressed with her way serving to customers. This was my 2nd time this restaurant the food served a small portion. I will recommend to my friend come to this place for dinner.

Yelp
The first time I stepped in here in the 2000's, it was a low key affair with the shop window facing Orchard Road. Yes, it was inside a swanky hotel, but the experience was akin to visiting an air-conditioned stall...nothing fancy, just great food back then. I became enamored with Chicken Rice after watching a Singaporean Comedy, " Chicken Rice Wars," watch it. It's a fun PG romance story bridging the class divide in Singaporean society. ... But I diverge.... Clearly, there are less expensive options and more savory versions of Singaporean Chicken Rice at local stalls. Arguing about the "best" chicken rice in SG can lead to arguments, family estrangements, and worse. I won't go there. I have My favorite SG stall which I won't share publicly less it gets overwhelmed with "newbies." Chatterbox has withstood the test of time, surviving recessions, remodelings, relocations, and COVID. The experience and ambiance has also changed dramatically. Prices are sky-high and it's now it's more of a luxury experience. The interior is exquisite, staff impeccably attentive, and the ambiance is more of a white-table cloth, fine dining experience. Unfortunately, something got lost along the way. The food is still good, not great...just good. Come here for chicken rice, swanky cocktails, 75 SGD sparkling tea, after some shopping at Ngee Ann City or Takashimaya. Unfortunately, other dishes we tried at this visit didn't pass the beginner cook level....and neither did some basic service fundamentals. As soon as we were seated, the server tried to up-sell us on a 75 SGD bottle of tea. We politely declined her repeated, severe insistence , which frankly had us a bit uncomfortable. We settled on a bottle of Italian, still water at a more reasonable price. We started with chicken satay...a generous portion of six large, chicken skewers in one order. These were very good and presented nicely. Taste, texture, all was great. We also tried an order of chicken wings. These were regrettable. These really were chicken wings...no chicken drumettes here! The taste had a mealy texture of grainy, uncooked flour with curry. Some of the inside of what little meat was there was undercooked and red. Something tells me the oil wasn't hot enough to crisp the flour coating and cook the meat. In addition, we had two orders of chicken rice and one of beef hor-fun. The chicken rice was nicely presented, and very good. For those not familiar, this version is served slightly cool...so don't expect steaming pieces of breast meat. However this is perfect for the weather and succulent, perfectly poached meat is accompanied by steaming chicken rice and boiling hot, clear chicken broth, with dipping sauces and cucumbers. Perfect!! The hor-fun was a regrettable disaster: an almost undescribable, brown mound of a floating mass swimming in a soup bowl of reddish sauce. The taste was ok, but this abomination demands intervention less the reputation of Singapore be stained by such a disaster. It really was that bad. We poured out some of the liquid to be able to see the noodles. For those not familiar, hor-fun is an almost-dry dish. It is a stir fry, and the noodles can sit on a slight bed of "gravy." But it is Not a wet noodle dish like ramen or won-ton noodle soup. Then the service....after the first course, the server comes fully loaded to place the main dishes in the table....yet the table hadn't been cleared!!! We are forced to scramble and hold up or shuffle dishes in the air while the server puts down the trays on the table. So there we are, doing gymnastics holding several dirty dishes while we wait for another server to rescue us. This is simply intolerable and embarrassment to the training at this establishment. I'll consider this an isolated incident during this visit. Overall, the visit was great for the chicken rice and the ambiance. Come here for the chicken rice if you are in the area. Hint: enter via the exterior escalators on Orchard Road near the Victoria's Secret store. CB is on the 5th floor. Then walk over to the same tower as the Hilton Hotel.

Yelp
There are some good restaurants in Mandarin Hotel, but the chicken rice here is delicious. You can also choose the type of meat. Breast or thigh? The product name is "Mandarin Chicken Rice". The moist, non-dry chicken is of the quality of the stone.

Yelp
I just got into town and it was late, so chose to stay in hotel for dinner. I had no reservation, and looking for a table,e for 1. The queue was over 1 hour, but they squeezed me into a small table which was very nice of them. Had the chicken rice and a plate of veggies. Food was ok, I have had better chicken rice. The restaurant was very loud as this was towards end of Chinese new year. Lots of small children running around. Servers seemed to be a bit in disarray. Took a while for me to flag down a server to tally up my bill and the. I just walked up to them to pay. Probably won't go back. Better options out there at the orchard road.

Yelp
We came here to eat dinner with my family after they picked us up from the airport Monday night. We had to wait a little bit for a table but it gave us a chance to check in to the hotel. We ordered several different dishes, including the lobster laksa, chicken rice, and chicken satay. All of the dishes were tasty, though pretty expensive as compared to other food court places. All in all, it was a convenient place to have dinner and had a wide selection of local dishes to try. My husband, who has never been to Singapore, enjoyed it a lot.

Yelp
Hidden in the Mandarin Orchard Hotel, this restaurant establishment looks like it's a hotel restaurant but the food is far from it! My meal started out with beef, pork and chicken satay with a sweet peanut sauce. Perfectly cooked, the meat dipped in this delicious peanut concoction was addictive. I would have eaten it alone! For my meal I had their version of the chicken rice. Again perfectly cooked, the rice had a slight chicken taste, clearly cooked in chicken broth. The miso soup too was quite tasty and refreshing, washing down my meal and filling me up. For dessert I had the homemade coconut ice cream. Served in a coconut shell it was savory. Great meal. Good location. I love this place. 5 stars.

Yelp
Make a reservation in advance. Get the hainanese chicken rice. They're famous for it here, and I can see why. It's delicious. I usually get it with dark meat only (the better version), but you can also get only breast meat or a mix. The chicken is tender and the sauce is flavorful. You don't even need the seasonings on the side. And the sauce is plentiful. The rice is soft, bouncy, and fragrant. The portion size was perfect for me, but might be a bit small for others. Service is friendly and fast. Place is clean. Can get a bit loud and crowded. Good central location.

Yelp
Fantastic Hainanese chicken with rice. A multi-cultural experience in the Mandarin Oriental. Service was polite and attentive.

Yelp
Firstly, if you are like me who tends to overlook some fine details, the restaurant is located on the 5th floor of Mandarin Orchard, not the Mandarin Oriental near the MBS. :) There are in total three Mandarin in Singapore. My friend's parents raved about the chicken rice here, saying it's a legend. But I learned later that the main chef had left and therefore the downturn of the quality. I think the chicken was solid, soft and juicy, but nothing fancy. The rice was flavorful, but not out of the world. You got the idea. We ordered a lot. Satay's peanut sauce was delicious. I didn't get to try the beef. The chicken was good. Bah-kut-te was fragrant but the meat seemed to need a bit more stew time. It's hard to get meat off the bones. The house made barley tea can be ordered as hot, warm or cold. The barley taste was strong but it's pre-sweetened. I found it a bit too sweet.

Yelp
This probably was the most disappointed and over-priced meal we had in Singapore . When Chatterbox made it to a few Honourable-Mention lists, we perhaps should have looked into the price. SGD27++ for a set of chicken rice? Pure daylight robbery . It wasn't even good, chicken was tough and stringy, rice was dry and boring. Cherry tomatoes, lettuce and carrot 100% did not belong on the plate. The saving grace of our meal was probably the salted egg chicken wings , they were crispy and evenly coated in crumbly salted egg yolk. But still, SGD20++ for 5 wings? I'm still baffled at how some people claim this "the best chicken rice in Singapore". Is this the only chicken rice they've ever eaten in their lives?

Yelp
I'm pretty sure I've dined here about 12 years ago and didn't think it was as good as Savoy back home. Fast forward to 2015 when my wife said that we had to stop by to see whether or not Chatterbox was as good as she remembered it being (she lived in Sing for 5 years). Since we were jet lagged and since they were open late, we came here for dinner on our first night in Sing. Had already set low expectations for their Hainan rice but wanted to give it a second chance so ordered that for dinner. To my surprise it was pretty tasty! Not sure what it was about my first visit but this time around the chicken was moist and tasty and the rice was fragrant and tasty! Wife commented that it was as good as she remembered it being and was a happy camper. One order would've normally been enough for the two of us to share but we were both starving and ended up finishing most of it. Only drawback was how pricey it was but what do you expect for a large portion of food and at a hotel right on Orchard Road.

Yelp
When visiting Singapore, everyone tells you to try the hawker centres. They have the best street food, the best chicken and rice....so who would expect a hotel restaurant to have such good chicken and rice? But this was one of our favourite meals in Singapore. While (very) expensive, both the Hainanese chicken and rice and the lobster laksa was top-notch. The chicken was tender, moist and fleshy and the rice, oh man, I wish I could have extra. The chicken-oil-soaked rice was just SO GOOD. The laksa was also amazing. I have never heard of lobster being in laksa before but it added an additional layer of flavour to the curry broth and was a game-changer. My standard of laksa definitely became way higher after my lunch here...and it was a pretty big lobster. I also found the service to be quite good, albeit slow; I had to suddenly leave partway through lunch for 30 minutes right after the first dish was served. Thus, my friend asked that they waited until I came back before serving the second dish. When I returned and we told them that we were ready to be served for the second dish, they told us that they were already preparing as they saw me return. Very observant and attentive to their customers. This restaurant is not cheap. In fact, it's a bit overpriced because there are definitely way cheaper options for equally good Chicken and Rice (ahem Tiantian) and more authentic laksa (let's be honest, no one else puts lobsters in their laksa). However, the outstanding service, the fact that there is AC (which you will not find in hawker centres - eating in 30C heat is not for everyone) and seating (which is also difficult at times in hawker centres), still makes this a good place for lunch - if you're willing to pay the price tag.

Yelp
This place wasn't bad but also not very good. It is in the Mandarin Orchard hotel and I stopped in for lunch one day. I waited a really long time for service, a long time for food, a long time for my check, and an epically long time for my change. When I asked my server what I could have that was gluten free, he pointed to one dish and said 'that one' off the whole menu. I was disappointed I could only have one thing or that something couldn't be altered but he was persistent that this was it. So I ordered it and the chicken was unexciting, the rice plain white, and the broth was actually the only thing I liked. The cost of the food was pricey for the quality but otherwise standard for a place like this. Service was friendly, just slow. The atmosphere was bland and uninteresting. I would avoid going back.

Yelp
One place that I have been patronising since my younger days, from the time they were located on the ground floor, this place never fails to draw me. The service is impeccable, though the feeling is not that of an atas or high-class restaurant, it's the very family feel and treatment. I was there with my in-laws, 6 plus a 3mth old baby, and while we were registering our request for a table for 6, the lady that received us (with smile and enthusiasm) noted the baby, and asked if we needed a baby chair, but laughed at herself that the baby was too small. She asked us to wait while she clears the table, and later sat us near a corner where we can comfortably push the pram to. Though some waiting staff were foreigners (noted one from China), she was extremely polite and patiently took and repeated the order. Finally, as I have vouchers the waiting staff asked if j wanted to use the all as there is still further room for discount. I will always come back!

Yelp
One of my favorite dishes in Singapore is laksa. I must say that Chatterbox has one of the best ones I've tried. Yes, it's probably due to the huge lobster that's in there! But it's SO worth it! The chicken rice is also good, but not worth it so much. You can get just as good or even better elsewhere for cheaper. It's great that Chatterbox is open late night because you can go after a night of cocktails on Orchard Ln.

Yelp
This is the restaurant where I had my first Hainanese Chicken Rice on my first visit to Singapore in 1990. And still my favorite spot until today (Dec 31st 2018) :)

Yelp
A place to go to when it is late at night or when you want a respite from shopping and do not want to jostle with the crowd in the food courts or similarly priced restaurants. Chatterbox is largely known for its Chicken Rice. I have been to Chatterbox when it was still on the ground level (before the renovation and new location) many years ago and have seen the price increased to its current exorbitant level. Then again, it is in a hotel and other hotels' restaurants also charge similar price for local food. I do like the chicken rice as it is quite good. It comes with a huge portion of meat (2 layers of lean and tender moist chicken meat; I read somewhere it is about 1/2 a chicken), a bowl of fragrant rice, a bowl of soup and condiments (chili, ginger and dark soya sauce). Besides chicken rice, Chatterbox also serves other local delights such as beef hor fun, char kway teow, lobster laksa, fried hokkien prawn noodles, bak kut teh, nasi lemak, nasi goreng, etc. If you prefer non-Asian food, there are always salads, sandwiches and burgers. The hokkien prawn noodles is also pretty good with a wok hei flavor, like wise for the beef hor fun. The bak kut teh is quite dismal to average. Nasi goreng is not bad. Another reason to dine at Chatterbox is the coconut ice cream which is served inside a coconut. It is surprisingly good, with creamy coconut flavor and tiny shreds of dried coconut flesh. Note: Sometimes I wonder if hotel restaurants (or any restaurants under any Food Card discount membership) purposely jack up their prices so that when card members dine there and utilize the card privilege (10%-50% discount based on number of diners), the prices are actually not so painful to the pocket.

Yelp
I was starving in Singapore and was looking to be Wow'ed. Came to Chatterbox to try their Famous Chicken Rice. Ive read about it in magazines, heard about it from friends, and read about it online. So I decided to give it a try. Arrived a little after 5pm and it was pretty empty and there were a lot of workers just standing around. I was their 4th table and I was expecting great service since they were overstaffed. While looking at the extremely over priced menu, I over heard the people behind me asking whats taking so long for their food as they had a flight to catch, they seemed very aggravated. Anyhow I already knew i wanted to try the dark meat chicken rice, but i also wanted to get an appetizer, however nothing seemed to catch my eye. I went ahead and just ordered their signature dish as I thought for $27 its probably going to be an enormous portion. Food came extremely fast, only within minutes of ordering. First thing that came to mind was, its just a regular portion that you can get almost anywhere else. However I started to dig in since I was starving. The chicken wasn't flavorful and was not tender as dark meat should be. I waved down a waitress and asked her about it, but she assured me that it was dark meat. I took her word for it, but for this to be their signature dish, I'm not sure why everyone raves about this place. It was not special at all. The soup was good, but probably because of all the fried scallions they add into it. It would have been a lot better if it was hot instead of luke warm. The rice was probably the best part of the meal. It was just perfectly cooked to the way i like. Flavor was okay, but texture was exactly what i wanted. The service was pretty lousy actually. It took forever to get a server to place the order, my water glass was empty half way thru my meal, and it took forever to get my bill. I don't understand how or why the service was so bad, there are so many waiters just standing around and not doing anything. Chicken rice was $27, after service and tax the total came out to $31.80. Don't make the same mistake as I did and try it out. Its a waste of time and money, go down one floor and try one of the other many restaurants.

Yelp
This place is known for its overpriced chicken rice ($27) and despite reviews telling people it's not worth it, I felt like I had to try it. So when a friend came into town for work and wanted Asian food, I decided it would be a good opportunity to try it, since it's sit-down place with service, AC, and local food. This restaurant sits openly within the Meritus hotel...a bit of a trek down hallways of the hotel to get to the restaurant. The dull lighting at night made the place a bit drab. I was hoping portions were family style to make it worth it, since it's about 6x the price of hawker center chicken rice. The entrees on the menu were individual portions, but you do get about double the amount of the hawker center chicken rice. I shared a lobster laksa for about $37...at least the price tag came with a decent individual sized lobster. Both were quite good...I wouldn't say too much better than the hawker center though. Service wasn't spectacular considering the price tag plus tax & service charge. There were a fair amount of Asians in the restaurant...so some locals must also be keeping this place in business. It's exactly what was expected...food is satisfactory but the price is not. I wouldn't go back. If you want chicken rice with AC maybe just buy back from a hawker center or eat in a food court. You're not missing too much service.

Yelp
Tender yummy chicken rice accompanied by fragrant soup and delicious chili. Drawback with the high price at $27 which probably makes it the most expensive chicken rice around. Nonetheless a fair value considering the quality and generous portion, easily 3 times the portion of meat compared to the average, and also well suited for late night dinners and supper operating up till 1am, at a comfortable enjoyable hotel ambience.

Yelp
Is it overpriced for hawker food? Yes it is! But it does not mean its not worth it. This is a must go and eat every time I'm in singapore. The chicken rice is da bomb- rice is perfect chicken is perfect. it!

Yelp
I took a chicken soup in there and it was quite delicious. By the way, finding the shop is a little bit hard; it's not on the first floor!

Yelp
Solid hainan chicken. I want to gush about it, but honestly, it's a tad short of that... and nevermind the price tag. Plus there's no wait compared to some other places, and for hainan chicken that's this good, that + A/C means there's a charm all on its own. 3.5 stars.

Yelp
I invited my guest and drove all the way to Chatterbox. Knowing that it will be a busy time we arrive early at 11:20am as they were just opened . We have been trying to book the restaurant through apps for several days but it is always full. We tried calling from the hotel but nobody ever answer the call. We waited in line for 10 minutes and was greeted by the receptionist. She said the tables were full and nothing is available until after 2:30pm. We explained that we drove all the way to eat there and asked if she can let us have a table as soon as it is available as we are willing to wait. She replied only after 2:30pm. We saw that there still many tables empty So we asked why we could not get a seat for two persons and have to wait 3 hours and she answer in an arrogant way that it is full. I am disappointed at the way she handled our request and obviously Hilton did not train her well. She made no effort at all to seat us and is very arrogant with her response. We will not go back there and we do not recommend anybody to go there unless you have a reservation and willing to experience arrogant service .

Yelp
I have been coming to this restaurant every time i visited Singapore since I was young. What amaze me is that the quality and the taste remain the same of not better. Must have for me is the Hainan chicken, bahkut teh and the roujak. The service is excellent, even though we came 15 minutes before they closing.

Yelp
Came here because I remember coming as a little kid. Had to see if it was as good as I remembered. It is but Hainan Chicken rice plate for $27?! But it only cost $8 in 1985. Oh how times have changed. Still as tasty as I remembered it to be but at hawker stand you can get an entire meal for two people for less than $20. Hence the 4 stars. Staff and service was very good. Presentation is a lot better here than at the hawker stand but you do pay a premium to be seated inside an ac area. This place is located in a mall but connects to Mandarin Orchard hotel. Rent must not be cheap so of course food prices reflect that. You definitely pay for the ac and nicer table and chairs than hawker stand areas. Although the flavor was spot on, not sure I would go back. Turns out locals laugh because this place is so expensive and quality of the chicken is not the best. I had to go back to reminisce my childhood bowl of rice but for anyone looking to get yummy Hainan Chicken rice, better to go to hawker stand. If you want ac, buy to go at hawker stand and eat in ac area. Not worth the $$.

Yelp
I totally regretted coming here to try their hainan chicken. I found a good thing at Tian Tian that was delicious and cheap. But people raved that this was just as good, if not better. At $27 a plate, I expect it to be out of this world delicious. Unfortunately, it was quite terrible. The rice lacked the chicken flavor and fragrance that is the number one key to good chicken rice. But even as white rice goes, this was cooked poorly. The rice was undercooked and unevenly cooked (or just sat out for too long), as some parts of it were harder and drier than others. Rice is suppose to be light and fluffy. The chicken was bland and DRY. Even with the sauce, it was not that good. It tasted even worse than some of the mediocre hainan chicken places in LA (and LA does not have good hainan chicken). While the portions were bigger than Tian Tian's $4 plate, the quality and taste of this was dramatically worse. I could have had almost 7 plates of amazingly delicious chicken rice at Tian Tian for the price of one pretty bad chicken rice here. I'm sticking with the cheap and delicious next time! If you are going to eat here, try something else. I have a feeling their lobster laksa would be a disappointment as well.

Yelp
I heard so much about Chatterbox serving the most expensive chicken rice served in Singapore. I refer to it as "Posh" Hainanese chicken rice. The meal comes served on the table on a tray. There is a plate of the chicken, a bowl of rice, a bowl of soup and a dish with the three different sauce. It was beautifully presented which I suppose what you pay as part of the price. The soup was slightly different to the typical one I have had as Chatterbox included egg tofu. It was an upmarket soup! Overall the chicken rice was okay but nothing special. Although I did like the clean and contemporary presentation. Chatterbox is located in Mandarin Oriental hotel which is big and easily get lost finding the restaurant. But it does also have any entrance from the shopping centre it is connected. Also, although it didn't look very busy when I visited for lunch, I suggest to reservd a table.

Yelp
This is my favorite chicken rice restaurant in Singapore. Bit expensive but worth it. One can order breast or leg with or without skin. Also take out packaging is great although they charge 2.50 packaging fee.

Yelp
My cousin who lives in Singapore took me to Chatterbox and told me about their famous Hainese chicken. Having not had it before I did not have high expectations. The Chatterbox is located inside the Mandarin Orchard Hotel. I enjoyed the dinner and the presentation and especially liked the different dipping sauces that accompanied the chicken. Great place to try out at least once for a first time experience.

Yelp
Overview: Visited October 2014. Chain eatery found on the 5th floor of the Mandarin Orchard Hotel shopping complex. Pros: 1) The chicken rice was excellent and service was good and quick. Cons: 1) Quite pricey for a Singapore staple meal (ex. chicken rice was 27 SGD). You could find this same meal elsewhere for 10 SGD. Tips: 1) If you are into trying new things, you still may want to confirm what you are ordering. (Ex. I though I was ordering fried pieces of fish, but what I got was whole fishes -bone, head, tail- battered and fried like a chicken tender). 2) To beat the lunch crowd, try to get there before noon and avoid a wait.

Yelp
Chatterbox is well known for their chicken rice. However their standard has gone down over the years and there are much better selection of chicken rice stores else where. On top of that, the price for a set ($25+) is enough to suggest going somewhere else.

Yelp
I don't see how this place is so famous?? The service quality is awful and food is average. Was surprised when they brought a cold spring roll. Do not expect this restaurant to be part of Mandarin.

Yelp
If u are looking for somewhere posh for hainanese chicken rice, this is somewhere in Singapore that you must try! No long queues under the hot sun. Great food and definitely worth a try

Yelp
A must for any newcomer to Singapore who wants to experience the humble chicken rice in air conditioned comfort. It is not for the budget traveller. A more comforting chicken rice can be obtained at many food courts or hawker centers in Singapore. However, as the maitre d explained to us the chicken rice is well known in Singapore at the Chatterbox. Whether it is the best or most comforting is for the individual diner to experience and decide. Although the chicken rice was $ 27 withut tax other items on the mene we tried were chicken porridge for $22 nad sea food hor fun for $27 without tax.

Yelp
This is the traditional go to place for Hainanese or simply Singapore Chicken Rice. One of the first perveyors of a good authentic Singapore Food staple, the place has move up (literary). 6 and so many years ago, this was still a homely cafe at the ground floor of the Meritus Mandarin. The chicken was pretty much as good as it is made out to be! Some refinements later, the hotel has moved upscale and is now the Mandarin Orchard moving the cafe upstairs as the much improved and modern Chatterbox. What's the best part? The Hainanese Chicken Rice has not changed and is still very good (and highly recommended)!

Yelp
Came here for a quick lunch as it was close to my hotel in Singapore. The specialty chicken rice was very good. A large bowl of chicken, rice, soup and 3 dipping sauces. The chicken was very fresh and cooked perfectly. A it pricey at 27 dollars but for a once in a while meal was very good. The ambiance is more in line with a lunch vs a nice dinner location.

Yelp
lobster laksa is one of my favourite. very delicious. don't forget to add some more laksa chilies!!!

Yelp
Not good :-( tried the hainanese chicken rice.. Doesn't even measure up to most food courts. Over priced. Ac and ambience earns it 2 stars

Sly S.

Yelp
The expectation comes from a correlation between price and location. However this concept is in a bit of predicament because the quality and taste of chicken rice suggest a hawker center in Singapore that only costs a few dollars is much more deserving!
