3 Best Day Trips From Cape Town

"You're at a wine farm in beautiful Franschhoek, so at least you know you're in for a visual treat—but Chefs Warehouse doesn't just delight the eyes. Setting aside, Chef Liam Tomlin is a culinary wizard of note in the South African dining scene, with his dazzlingly inventive set tapas menu recasting him as something of a Picasso on the plate, creative with flavor as much as with presentation. To wit: There's steamed hake with Cape Malay dressing; springbok with beetroot lacquer and marinated daikon radish; and outlandish takes on the humble risotto, like a tandoori cauliflower and yogurt version with candied spiced cashews and deep-fried onions. All to say: If you don't think this is one of the best meals you've had in South Africa, someone will happily finish your leftovers. And, because you're on a wine farm—and a very popular one at that—expect plenty of great options, like one of Maison's reasonably priced wines by the glass." - Sarah Khan

We visited Chefs Warehouse at Maison for the Restaurant Week special with wine pairing and had a lovely overall experience. The setting is beautiful and the service was absolutely stellar — special mention to Rowina, who took great care of us throughout the meal. The food was good, though not quite as spectacular as we’d expected given the restaurant’s reputation. The Game Fish Sashimi was the clear standout — fresh, vibrant, and full of flavor. The Lesotho King Trout was also excellent, perfectly cooked and beautifully balanced. The Braised Fennel Risotto was a bit uninspiring, and the Springbok Loin, though flavorful, was slightly tough. Dessert was a highlight — the Caramelised Ivoire Mousse was rich, elegant, and a wonderful way to end the meal. All in all, a well-executed menu with great wines in a wonderful setting, and a truly memorable service. Great food — not spectacular, but definitely enjoyable.

We had a great date dinner night. The place is so elegant and cosy, with warm wood design and furniture. Complements to the chef for their menu creativity - the tasting menu was elegant, fresh and well paired with Maison Estate wines. We’ll be back!

This is a beautiful setting to share a meal with a loved one or friend. Service is really good and the staff is friendly. The food was beautiful but some of the dishes did not hit the mark for me on taste combinations. Two dishes were also heavily seasoned with salt which made it too savoury for me. Also strange that dessert is not included, I would happily have swopped a course for it.

Maybe set expectations were too high. The food was good, but not spectacular. Everything tasted like peppers. Food was well cooked and nicely presented, but didn’t love the flavors. Heavy spicing that all kind of tasted the same. The corn on the cob was the savory, crispy, and tender. The other things were just not appealing to me. It was raining and the dining room was filled with flies too. Might have just been a weather thing, but it was distracting and disappointing.

If you’re looking for an intimate experience, I would highly recommend Chefs Warehouse at Maison. The staff were warm and inviting, setting the tone for an evening of fine dining. I had the vegetarian set menu which I would definitely recommend to my fellow vegetarians. The intricate plating to the delicate flavours of the dishes takes your palate on a journey through the courses.

As always, a delicious lunch. The service was friendly, though a bit disorganized. The atmosphere was delightful, with a pleasantly diverse mix of guests.

Chefs Warehouse at Maison is a wonderful lunch experience. The 5 course tapas menu is beautifully put together and delicious. The location is gorgeous, with the mountains around Franschoek in the background and beautiful Oak trees, vines and a green lawn in the foreground. Gorgeous fluffy chickens run around the area, amusing with their antics. The staff are attentive and friendly. The Caramelised Ivoire Mousse with Hazelnut, Cocoa Nib and Bains whisky which is a dessert on the current menu is the best dessert I have eaten in a long time. It was sublime.

The setting and atmosphere of Chef Warehouse at Maison is thought through, the restaurant is overlooking the mountain and vineyard. Very kind and professional staff. We had the Tapas for 2 that contains a set menu 4 different meals (starter and deserts are extra options and not included in the set menu). We were slightly disappointed that the desert is not included in the R850/person price. I have some dietary restrictions that I confirmed with them before arriving. The reason I gave 4 stars only as they promised they were able to accommodate my needs and leave out some spice of my meal that I am allergic to, but in reality I just did not get the dish my husband had and they did not offer an alternative dish for me. 😢This is a fine dining experience and you would expect them to come up with something especially that I informed them 4 days before and was assured they can accommodate me. The starter was my favourite very light dish 3 different plates, flavours balanced nicely with the fish, some Japanese influence I enjoyed very much, especially the game fish sashimi. All the other courses were eye pleasing and tasty. The pork meal, we felt there were too many flavours happening and just did not come together. Finishing with duck breast that was a bit heavy and not as sophisticated as the previous meals. We had a good time, but not sure if we will be back.
