Chen Clan Ancestral Hall

One of the most fantastic museums I've visited, and cheap to enter only ¥10 per person (half that if you book online), containing some of the most amazing artifacts of the Guangdong Province, including heaps from my ancestral region Chaozhou, made me real proud of my heritage to be going through centuries of history wirh a two hour stroll through the various rooms here. Also, the gift shops were unobtrusive, and not pushy either. There were of course too many things to buy and not enough room in the bag. Highly recommended!

The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is a beautiful and well-preserved heritage site with stunning architecture and detailed carvings that really show traditional Chinese craftsmanship. It’s informative and worth visiting if you’re interested in history and culture. That said, it gets very crowded, especially during peak hours, and the waiting time to enter can be quite long. That takes away a bit from the experience, so I’m knocking off one star for the crowd and wait. Overall, still a great place to visit—just come early if you want to enjoy it properly.

It is a very large clan property that once fell into disrepair and was later restored by the government to its former grandeur. You’ll probably need a guide to explain the history, architectural features, and finer details to fully understand and appreciate the place. Good for a 1–2 hour tour.

Very historical place. There was a long queue when we were there. Seniors aged 60 and above free entry for all nationalities. Can see all the beautiful intricate roof carvings here.

The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, also known as the Chen Family Academy, is located on Zhongshan Seventh Road, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. Construction of the Chen Family Academy began in 1888 (the 14th year of the Guangxu Emperor's reign) and was completed in 1893 (the 19th year of the Guangxu Emperor's reign). It is one of the largest existing traditional Cantonese buildings and one of the largest, best-preserved, and most exquisitely decorated ancestral halls in China, hailed as a "pearl of Lingnan architectural art." The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall's architectural structure can be divided into three axes and three courtyards, comprising nine halls and six courtyards. The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall embodies the pinnacle of Lingnan architectural craftsmanship and decoration. Almost every hall, courtyard, corridor, pavilion, door, window, railing, wall, roof ridge, and beam showcases the superb skills of Lingnan architecture's "three carvings, two sculptures, one casting, and one painting," namely wood carving, brick carving, stone carving, pottery sculpture, plaster sculpture, bronze and iron casting, and painted murals. The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is a representative of traditional Lingnan architecture and a concrete manifestation of ancestral hall culture within the Cantonese culture.

If you're in Guangzhou, the Chen Clan Academy is definitely worth a visit. It's a beautifully preserved ancestral hall from the Qing Dynasty, and now it's home to the Guangdong Museum of Folk Arts. Built back in the late 1800s with donations from Chen family members all over Guangdong, the place is packed with history and culture. What really stands out is the classic Lingnan style architecture with super detailed carvings in wood and stone, plus pottery and traditional paintings everywhere you look. It’s honestly one of the most impressive traditional buildings in the area, and you can easily spend hours just admiring the craftsmanship and exploring all the unique artifacts. A must-see if you're into history, art, or just cool old buildings.

A splendid witness to the glory days of the Chen clan in Chaozhou, this ancestral hall (陳家祠） is a labour of love that glows with pride in housing candidates preparing for the Imperial Examinations. Being a Chen of Teochew descent myself, despite being generations and thousands of miles removed, I simply had to take a peek. What started as mere curiosity grew into a historical and cultural adventure. From its intricate carving and moulding works, attention to detail and taste are on full display, complete with copious notes and context so that visitors are left without doubt about the achievements and contributions of this long line of Chens. Artistry, civility, discipline and ethics are demonstrated across a mind-boggling range of materials like porcelain, metals, brick, stone, wood, paints and lacquer work are fashioned into furniture, fittings, walls, gates, arches, roofs, stuccos abd and a variety of ornamental sculptures. Put aside 2-3 hours for this manmade wonder. While rather inconvenient for people with mobility issues, this hall is accessible by public transport and otherwise extremely walkable; walking shoes work best. It gets crowded, even on weekdays, and can be slightly uncomfortable on warmer, more humid days; so dress light.

A beautiful place to see many old artifacts and architectural designs unique to the Lingnan region. They did a wonderful job retaining and restoring old designs. Book online and bring your passport along with you. Coming at around golden hour is also a beautiful time to view the place.
