This restaurant has been here for decades. I would come here when I want some comfort food, just like today, in a typical Portland gloomy day, I want a hot bowl of wonton noodle soup. I think this bowl is their specialty as well as the roast duck and pork.
Like most Chinese restaurants, the interior and environment aren't the most pleasant, but the food is solid. You don't need to be pretentious but being yourself in such an environment. That's why you can see everyone is so casual and relax here. Most importantly, the bowl is decent with a fair price.
The roast duck wonton noodle soup is my favorite and the roast pork I had today is second. Back then, I hate their noodle with too much the taste of alkali water, today, I discovered the noodle was different. I was able to confirm with one of their waitresses and the lady told me they reduced the amount of alkali water in the noodle, which is a good news. The noodle tastes much better now. As a Cantonese, I have special emotion towards wonton noodle soup. Though this is not the best bowl I had, in Portland, it's considered one of the best.
For people who really love wonton noodle soup, I recommend that when you get a chance to visit Hong Kong, look for the traditionally made jook-sing wonton noodles (竹昇雲吞麵) if you are lucky enough to find one as there are only a very few restaurants left that still make the noodles in the traditional manner. It's a simple bowl but usually the simplest is the hardest to make it good.
A good bowl of wonton noodle soup not only the noodles are full of chewiness but soft and slippery that you can't taste of alkali water. The soup base should follow the traditional method using roasted flatfish, shrimp shell, pork bone, monk fruit and licorice with a fresh and sweet flavor. Yes, this is the bowl in memory... ... I haven't find the same yet in the states. This place only satisfied half of my craving of wonton noodle soup and roast duck / pork.
