Like any frequent flier, short of racking up segments, I cringe a bit when I have to fly into rural airports.
Even though it only has a couple of gates, one sorta cafe and one TSA line, this is somehow one of my favorite airports in the country.
Maybe it's just the pure-Michigan air permeating the usually stagnant airport ventilation. But when you're inside, you feel more like you're in a lodge, or your parents' vacation house, not an airport.
You walk in and see beautiful wood beams, hand-made rustic furniture, a stone fireplace and large pained windows taking in Northern Michigan's beauty.
The counter help is always great, lines are never more than a couple people and TSA is a breeze. Well sorta, they are a bit... less used to traveler complexities that say a DTW would be able to handle quickly.
But the quaintness of it aside, my favorite part has to be the outdoor patio. I have been to very few airports that have outdoor lounge space post-security. But Traverse City does! It's a small little lounge, but has tables and chairs to sun yourself on. My last flight out was running a little late, so I took the time to catch a few rays before heading back home.
Food wise, there isn't much. There is a small coffee shop that has beer and wine, and some sandwiches, but don't come here looking for some greasy-hangover-curing airport food, you'll surely be disappointed.
TVC is not big, it doesn't have many of the things I normally applaud in other airports, but to me it's perfect. Coming up or down, be sure to look out your windows as the sites of Grand Traverse Bay and the Lake Michigan coast are breathtaking on a clear day.
