I stayed here in 2004 as a college student, and decided to spend two nights recently. I even ended up in the same room - a single on the top floor. Not much has changed here, which is both good and bad. They've clearly painted the room, and moved the bed around, but otherwise it all seemed pretty much the same. But, the price also hasn't changed much, which is amazing.
The location is great - a few minutes walk from Victoria, on a quiet street, but near restaurants and bars. You can walk to the main tourist sites in 20-45 minutes, or obviously take the many buses and trains that are at Victoria.
Check in on a Friday evening was quick and friendly. I got up to my room immediately (still no elevator, so beware if you're on an upper floor, and the hallways are narrow with steep stairs).
The room was tiny, as I expected and remembered, but did have the basics - a bed which was small but comfortable, a small TV with plenty of channels, and a private bathroom. All of this for 65 GBP/night for the single room, with a breakfast basket (banana, apple, orange, and some other items).
The negatives: WiFi was atrociously bad. When I could connect, which was almost never, it was slow and constantly dropped. Certainly don't expect to remain connected with the outside world from within the hotel. Plus, the shower - even at 4am, when I was seemingly the first person to take a shower, it would take 5 minutes for the water to heat up. And the shower had terrible pressure.
As a base for London, it's again a perfect location. But, use it only to sleep - it's not a great place to come back to and relax after a long day. Plus, you'll need to go elsewhere to do any e-mails or research any tourist plans. And don't even think about staying here on a business trip.
