Pros:
1) Cheap, paid RM60 a night for a double bed that came with air-cond, two chairs, a TV, soap, a roll of toilet paper and towels. Shared bathroom, but there are other rooms with en-suites.
2) Clean
3) Rustic, old-school look with antique-looking furniture that doesn’t look out of place. The Chairman Mao statue and Chinese deities around the place gives it a bit of character.
4) Friendly manager, can speak in English.
5) Bicycle parking space. The ground floor has a fruit loading business, and the guys manning the shop will watch your bike (parked behind a wall) for you in the day. A security guard on site will also be there to watch your bike when the shutters go down.
Cons:
1) Next to a main road, can get noisy during the day.
2) If you don’t like basic, this place isn’t for you.
3) No ground floor rooms, so you’ll have to bring your baggage up with you.
Neutral:
1) You have to leave your shoes at the ground floor and walk up the stairs on feet/socks. I quite like this as I don’t have to wear sandals while walking from my room to the bathroom, but not everyone will.
Conclusion: No-frills, cheap basic and clean hotel near the heart of Taiping town, suitable for backpackers, bicycle tourers and budget-conscious tourists. Well worth the money paid for.
