The best place we've visited in our visit in Fredericton. The girl in the cash greeted us the moment we got in, and when we weren't sure what to get, she gave us the rundown on what pastry is always available and what seasonal what's always bought, etc. She saw me glancing at the booth table, and she cleaned it even before I could even ask. The pastry may be a bit pricy, but it's worth the money. The coffee is good too. It's just perfect and enjoyed our visit. Would visit again if we ever come back to Fredericton.

I visited twice during recent trip to Fredericton. I was so impressed with the level of service! The staff were very helpful and truly care about the business and customers. My tomato sandwich was delicious as we're the cakes I bought.

We visited Fredericton and came here for breakfast. We had chicken sandwich and an Almond croissant, a cup of americano and a cup of house blend coffee. The pastries are tasty, coffee smells great and has enough caffeine that makes me more energetic. The city view from the shop’s window was beautiful. The service was great and friendly. I would recommend this place.

We decided to have lunch at the airport location after seeing on the website that it was a French Pâtisserie. We went to the one on the Departure side, and were very disappointed. The display were not labelled well, and the server was not very helpful. We asked if she could make an iced coffee with caramel, and she proceeded to put the caramel on the bottom of the cup, add the ice, and then the coffee, so the caramel was solidified at the bottom of the cup, and the coffee tasted like it had been sitting all day. There was no tomato soup, so we got veggies, but they were dry and tasteless, and dated for 3 days before. If you are thinking of eating at the Fredericton Airport location, think again.

The coffee is worth the trip, and the service is decent. The patisserie were definitely not worth 12$, and they tasted alright, but nothing exceptional. We had the choco tart and the carrot cake. Our drinks were toffee late and a brown sugar late.

Very nice cafe with warm and welcoming vibe. Staff here is very helpful and nice. They literally care about their customer and try to participate in a conversation if you want or start one. The lady in the front also helped me choose for what i want with my drink as it was my first time here. Definitely recommend it to everyone and will come back for sure again

All of the staff are accomodating. They make the atmosphere so comfortable. The front staff was truly amazing, and their barista is well experienced. The desserts and the drinks were exemplary and the nice ambiance too!

The hot chocolate is a little pricey for the flavour. The brownie Cruffin is a fun experimental recipe with lovely croissant flavour that doesn't quite go with the chocolate icing etc. They have a lot of other treats we didn't try and are willing to taste in future.

Yelp
A little pricey, but worth it. It was also a recommendation! I ordered 6 macarons and a cafe latte, it was about $20 ish (give or take) with tip. I tried the London Fog and Strawberry Champagne macarons. Oh they were good! The London Fog were my favorite! The latte was delicious, it was creamy and strong, I enjoyed it! When I'm back in Fredericton I'll stop in again, they had so many lovely dessert in the showcase!

Yelp
This review is for the location in the Fredericton airport. There are two locations in the airport. the first one was closed so the only place to get a coffee is after you went through security. They only staffed one poor teenage girl to run this location. Even for a Tim Hortons, this wouldn't be acceptable but to be expected to make various hot drinks, etc is impossibe. there has been a huge line for an hour with customers trickling through very slowly. one guy she said that his croissant would be ready in 20 secs and he was left waiting for 10 minutes. everything looks delicious but there is no way everyone will be served before loading. Get your shit together Chesspiece owners, hire more people... I'm surprised she is keeping her composure and doesn't walk out.

Yelp
Had a really mixed experience at chess Piece Patisserie and Cafe during my stay in fredericton. I read the name of chess piece almost in every list mentioning best places for dessert in fredericton. During our first visit, we ordered a 24 karat cake which was really fresh and tasty. Second time, we visited this cafe to have a good coffee and dessert. When we entered the place, it was smelly may be because of small area. We ordered choco nutter mousse and cappuccino. Honestly, i had cappuccino at so many good places and it was not even close to that. Choco nutter mousse had a perfect balancing sugary content which made our coffee bearable. Overall, our visit totally resulted into a huge disappointment.

Yelp
Just want you guys know that we picked up a strawberry cheesecake last saturday,12th of june, for my birthday but my partner and WERE NOT happy with the cake. We paid to have it decorated with french macarons but what we got on the cake was some white merengue cookies. i was really looking forward for those macarons like how they decorate other people's cakes. Cheesecake has a burnt side, cracked and overcooked so its has a dry and crumbly texture. The strawberry compote topping was good and just kinda helped balance everything. My partner did complained about it on the day he picked up the cake at the store right when he saw it was crumbling on the side and the macarons were missing. He wanted to return the cake but he was convinced to buy it with discount. Still costs over $100 for an overcooked cheesecake with no french macarons that we paid for. We emailed the manager/owner about it but never got a response back so im posting this review on yelp.

Yelp
Just awsome! I took the three chocolates cake and it was a really good experience! Very tasty, good quality... Try it!

Yelp
Very pour customer service. Would not serve my husband takeout coffee because he did not have proof of vaccines....For take out coffee.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem in a city far far away. I have yet to find a better mille feuille anywhere in Toronto, New York, Ottawa or Quebec. The quality is outstanding, the consistency is great! People in Fredericton don't realize the gem they have got themselves there. Many don't even know it exists!

Yelp
Chess Piece is a great spot to stop by for a light lunch. Desserts are a must, especially the macaroons! It's clean, quiet, and a great spot to hang out with friends for some coffee. I, myself, like to sit by the large windows in the front and people watch and watch cars drive by. If you're looking for good quality, authentic Parisien cafés, this is the place to go!

Yelp
My only complaint about Chess Piece is that they tempt me with over a dozen varieties of fresh pastries with no way for me to try them all! Chess Piece is a small coffee shop off Queen St in downtown Fredericton. The menu features a variety of coffee and tea drinks as well as an assortment of mostly sweet pastries. On this visit, I tried the cold brew coffee and a spinach and feta croissant. The coffee was smooth and without need of any additions. The pastry was flaky and stuffed full of spinach. At 9:30 on a weekday morning, the place was busy with both eat in and take out customers, so it was a bit tricky to get a table.

Yelp
I always try to pop in to Chess Piece when I'm in Fredericton to treat myself to one of the many delicious treats that they have available. Everything I've ever eaten or had to drink here has been wonderful, whether it was savoury or sweet. While I personally dislike macarons, they have a great selection of them here if that's your thing. I also remember them saying that they make their own syrups, which I think is really special. The only downside to this spot is that it is a little small. While this makes it cozy, it also means that if it's busy that you're going to wait or have to get takeout. I've been lucky enough that I've only had to wait once and for a short time. This is not a spot that I would feel comfortable going to work in because of that. Your best bet for parking is probably in the metered lot across from TD on Queen St. If you love a fancy dessert or want to treat yourself to something special, definitely stop by!

Yelp
Their gluten free macarons are my favourite (but I'm also pretty sure that's all they have that I can eat!). I'll drive to the café just for and order of 6 for $12. Handmade, delicious and appear to be naturally flavoured. Even if you go there all the time, you'll notice that they always have several flavours of macarons, and they often bring in new flavours, like Japanese yuzu -- yum! I recommend salted caramel, though!

Yelp
The good-a wonderful eclair with a hazelnut filling. This was a "real" eclair not a donut stuffed with pudding. Absolutely delightful! The not-so-good...iced coffee. It was a very hot day and we both were looking forward to a cold drink. The menu says "ask about iced" so we did! Anticipating a cold brew, we watched in abject horror as the counter person took two large mugs and filled them to the brim with ice cubes AND then draw very hot coffee over the ice. Needless to say it was a good thing we asked for dark roast. The "iced" coffee was so watered down and barely cool. We drank it anyway, being hot and needing hydration. In hindsight I'd go for hot coffee instead and enjoy the air conditioning!

Yelp
Really cute cakes and savory options! The pastries are instagram-worthy and quite indulgent. Conveniently located downtown on Queen St, so a great spot for breakfast, coffee breaks, or lunch (they have sandwiches, soups, etc) on a weekday. They are open in the evenings (until 9pm?) too, so can be a great spot for after work meetups. There's plenty of seating inside and is generally pretty quiet, so can be an alternative study spot vs. Second Cup, generic coffee shops, etc down the street. They also have yummy caffeinated drinks and nice latte art :D Prices are pretty typical for independent pastry cafes, i.e. $10-20 per visit if you get a drink + 1 food item

Yelp
Absolutely amazing and beautiful desserts. The staff is super friendly. The coffee and Late's are the best. And make sure to pick up some macaroons on your way out!

Yelp
This place is amazing. So many yummy baked goods and incredible cozy atmosphere. The baked goods are second to none. I do wish it was bigger to accommodate more people who want to hang around and drink coffee and read but without losing its cute atmosphere. Parking is also annoying unless you park in the public parking lot. Service is very friendly. Favorite Dishes: Salted Caramel Latte, Salted Caramel Macarons

Yelp
Fredericton is hardly a destination for foodies and the downtown area can be disappointing. But the Chess Piece is a delicious surprise for those seeking a light lunch or snack not far from the tourist zone. Their prices might be a tad high but the quality is there. I stopped for lunch and had a delicious small, individual quiche ($4.40) and an interesting tourtière ($6) along with an espresso. These made a very good, quite filling lunch. I couldn't resist taking home a couple of tarts: one lemon (delicious) and one chocolate (very good) and both were prepared à la française with a shortbread crust. Service was friendly. Total with tax came to $27. Worth a stop for a light meal in a bright, pleasant café atmosphere.

Yelp
Nice little patisserie. It has a lot of food choices: macarons, muffins, croissants, mini cakes, etc. It all looked delicious but I went for an almond croissant and a blueberry muffin. They were both very good. I had a cup of black coffee which was also very good. The only reason I didn't give it five star is the lady serving me could have been a little friendlier. She wasn't rude, but smiling a little doesn't hurt, even in morning rush. Maybe she was just having a bad day. Don't let that stop you from trying this place. It is delicious!

Yelp
Over rated and over priced in my opinion. 3 coffees and four fancy pastries for near $40. And we had to clear a table just to sitt down. Not again!!!

Yelp
Incredible atmosphere. Such an inviting and kind staff, always willing to assist and make suggestions if you're stuck on something. Good place to sit down and enjoy a coffee or a baked good. Definitely recommend the NB Fog!
google avatar

Yelp
Best London Fog latte downtown. Sweet atmosphere. Awesome, decadent treats that almost look out of place in a city like Fredericton. A wonderful place to hang out with your friends. Vegetarian friendly.

Yelp
This is a must if you are visiting Fredericton. There are lots of sweet and savoury options- something for everyone. A small cafe that is often busy, but is totally worth the wait!

Yelp
Please check the acidity of your espresso machine. Something tastes off, this should be done daily before the store opens just a heads up! Have had great coffee here , tonight's wasn't the best. Better luck next time :O

J J.

Yelp
Try the macaroons, try the macaroons, try the macaroons! If you're looking for a delicious dessert and don't mind treating yourself to something a tad more pricey than the Chess Piece will hook you up. The prices are reasonable but I still struggle spending money on dessert :P The coffee is good too. Definitely a spot to check out. Or some evening take your significant other for a treat! The atmosphere is pretty awesome.

Yelp
Chess Piece is my go-to every time I am in Fredericton for work. This cafe has super friendly staff and potentially the best sandwiches I've ever had. The coffee and pastries are delicious as well! I highly recommend checking it out.

Yelp
Cozy, friendly atmosphere. Special place to meet for a coffee and a treat - nice soups and sandwiches too! Love it!

Yelp
wow, friend and I, both former Montrealers loved the coffee and selection of french gateaux, pasteries." Ambiance " with lots of eye candy, cool clients, sweet helpful waitstaff and the owner was happy that we loved the place, its genuine

Yelp
Our first attempt at Chess Piece for lunch was quashed by sellouts of all of their sandwiches due to the overwhelming popularity of the café but today we finally managed to stop in for dessert. She got a 'gingerbread people' and I got a chocolate dipped peanut butter cookie. Both were glorious. Will be back for more.

Yelp
My family have come here several times as there aren't that many cafe's in town. The espresso-based drinks are usually good and they have a wide tea selection. The cakes we've tried are delicious, although the portions are quite big - good for sharing though. The pastries are a bit hit and miss - the croissants/puff-pastries can be a bit dry, as can the scones. The macaron's are excellent, and they're always trying new ideas, but at $2 a pop, a bit overpriced. We've had one bad service experience - arriving just before noon, we asked for vegetarian options - there were none, so my partner just got a scone. Not 5 minutes after we sat down though, they brought some beautiful looking vegetarian quiches out of the oven. If we had known, we would have waited. This review probably sounds a bit more negative than it should. I still like Chess Piece, and I will return again!

Yelp
Went there with my roommate to see what it was like. Very nice. The treats and coffee smelled great. Little more expensive than the usual Cafe in town, but nothing outrageous

Yelp
Not much by way of vegan options, but they have a great tea selection! A cosy atmosphere, too. Great for getting together with friends.
