A fantastic hostel! I stayed for just over two weeks and I always felt safe and comfortable. The owners are absolutely lovely, friendly, and welcoming, and their kid is adorable. Despite the age of the building, everything was in good shape and it was always clean and well-presented. I believe it was freshly refurbished when the new management took over. It's in a great location, right next to a big Waitrose so shopping couldn't be easier, and less than a ten minute walk to the train station or the shops and restaurants of the town center. They have everything you could need, including laundry facilities. Chris even offered to rearrange or add more furniture for me as I was staying for a while and might have needed more drawers. There is a very well-stocked, shared kitchen that nobody ever seemed to be occupying when I wanted to cook. Coffee, tea, and such basics were complimentary. In addition to the eat-in kitchen, there are more communal spaces on the outdoor patio and balcony, and in the front sitting room which is stocked with toys, games, and a TV. I booked several months in advance and was able to get a private en-suite room at a discounted rate, not that the normal rate was by any means high. My room was very nice. The windows are double glazed, the curtains block light, the bed, pillows, and sheets were comfy, the shower was hot and had better water pressure than mine does at home, and everything matched and was painted a lovely dark blue, which did a lot to make it feel homey. I didn't have a single problem or complaint, and I know where I'll be staying next time I'm in Chester.

We wanted to stay in Chester for the night and needed somewhere cheap and close to the town centre. This hostel suited us well and was as expected for a two star. It was homely, clean and friendly. The man that greeted us was welcoming, relaxed and approachable. Overall, we were pleasantly surprised by our visit and would definitely stay again.

My husband and I booked last minute with Chester Backpackers, but Chris was able to accommodate us. Chris has been an amazing host! He was very friendly and helpful upon arrival. Also, he gave us a great cheap pub to check out that was excellent! Ask him, and he'll let you in on the secret spot! The building is 200 years old, so it has a personality. The rooms were clean and the beds were made with clean linen after each tenant left (we saw him changing and doing the laundry often ourselves)! He has lots of travel guides for the region and a map of the city you can take a picture of to help guide you around. Just ask and he will give you a suggested route to take, which we did and really enjoyed! My husband and I had a wonderful visit, and you will too if you are looking for a great budget hostel that has a friendly employee and a great location to the downtown area!

Building is about 200 years old, and it has been maintained well respecting how much it costs for travelers to stay in this neighborhood. Private rooms may not be spacious for every customer. Manager is beyond awesome. He will make you feel at home immediately. *** When you book, you should call the hostel to make direct arrangement instead of thru search engine site ***

While the people that worked there were helpful and real nice, the rom I stayed in was downright dangerous. The room had no windows so I couldn't air out, and no way to vent the air. There was also a leak form the lamp in the ceiling. This is like I said downright dangerous and I dont recommend anyone stay at this hostel.

I came with a group of students from Germany to Chester and we moved in this hostel. It's absolutely disgusting there. I totally agree with the two others complaining about it... The showers dirty, the ceiling leaks in one of the room and the walls are mould-infested... The only thing left to say: Do not go there! It might seem cheap but it's way to expensive when considering the quality there!

No one there to let us in even though we had prearranged a booking in time. Waited half hour then had to leave as was in Chester for someone's birthday. No one answered phones. We ended up sleeping in the car. Still get charged I'm sure.

Bit weird sleeping in a room full of strangers, but clean and cheap. Under new management since terrible reviews
