10 Places That Are Always on Fire

"All you need is a pair of hiking boots and a lighter to find out how the Eternal Flame Falls got its name. At the heart of this waterfall is a small flickering flame that is caused by a natural gas pocket and hikers who pass by the falls and relight the gas pocket whenever it sputters out, keeping the flame in an eternal cycle. The eternal flames caused by natural gas pockets are common, but the imagery of a lone flame under torrents of water make Eternal Flame Falls unique. The imagery has inspired some active imaginations resulting in legends and sightings of elves in the area, and while those legends have obviously been disproved, the falls remains a mystery from a scientific perspective. The natural gas that eternal flame sites give off comes from a reaction caused by old and very hot shale rocks. The falls, made out of relatively young shale, and as hot as a cup of tea, should be the last place you would expect an eternal flame. Yet, defying all scientific explanation, and the massive amounts of water around it, the flame burns on." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Beautiful, serene, lots of free parking. Downsides - a lot of the trails are *wide* paved roads with limited shade and the parts that are not are fairly difficult, like the journey to the eternal flame where you have to partially hike in the creek or on rugged hill sides. The topography here is also not the most interesting I've ever seen.

This Park has so many treasures! But today we visit the top of the sledding hill near the casino and commissioner's pond. Such a beautiful clear perfect day. A very well kept park with lots sof trails too.

Beautiful park. Fantastic playgrounds for kids and a great disc golf course. Bathrooms are kept clean and the water fountains at the casino area are great. There are lots of walking trails and the whole park is usually very clean. Warning to EV users, the plugs are usually broken or glitchy. Really wish they would fix this. Only other complaint would be the old trash cans that have been left of the disc golf course that are overflowing. The responsibility belongs to the disc golf community for making the mess but I wish they would just gey rid of the cans that the park does not intend to empty themselves.

We love taking our dogs here to hike. There are some great trails although some can get a bit steep so they are not all senior dog friendly but most are. There are bathrooms all over, they are clean and accessible. There are numerous pavilions and places to pull off and park once inside. There is a casino you can rent for parties and in the winter there is an amazing hill for sledding.

I was last here 30 years ago for tobogganing but we decided to have a family picnic which turned out really nice for not having a reservation. The park is huge... I felt like we were in a state park with the amount of driving between pavilions. We went to visit the old toboggan area (great views), then did the Eternal Flame Falls trail. 🔥 beautiful place!
