It's a decent, clean, well maintained, newly built property nestled amidst swaying coconut palms on a quiet street. It's run by the promoters of the more luxurious heritage property down the road called Chettinad Mansion, and checkin formalities & meals are done there.
A few points:
- I had initially booked my stay through a third party (Goibibo in my case), and upon reaching the property, found it deserted. None of the given phone numbers worked, and I was forced to reach out to Goibibo who after struggling for a while to reach them refunded me my money. I should mention though that the manager Mr Gopakumar reached out to me later in the day and it turns out the numbers listed were due for updation. He more than made it up to me by offering me to come back for the following night (which I did) at a discounted rate. I'd like to believe this was a rare problem and a one-off.
- Free Wifi / internet is mentioned but was not available. I asked for it and was told they have a dongle which they had given to somebody else and I would get it later - nobody came back to me on that. So basically, no free internet from their side, which in today's times is a basic expectation.
- Swimming pool was mentioned in the amenities, but upon asking I was told it is reserved for guests of Chettinad Mansion only. A Spanish gentleman staying in the dormitory at the same time as me was told it's closed for repairs. These inconsistent versions leave a bad impression. If they don't want backpacker guests to use it, IT SHOULD NOT BE MENTIONED AT THE TIME OF BOOKING.
- A subtle observation was that guests at the time of checking out of Chettinad Mansion received much warmer smiles, enquiries of where they were going next, etc. In my case I was just handed over the bill without any further warm smiles or engagement. This may not have been a problem if I were checking out of Chettinad Packer alone - but because the difference was so starkly visible, thought I'd mention it. It's never cool to receive (however subtle) signs that you are seen as a second class guest.
Basically, what you are paying for is a comfortable dormitory bed in a well air-conditioned 4-bed dormitory room with clean toilets and showers. Any other extras / amenities you see should be taken not at face value. Prepare your expectations accordingly.
