I didn't know what to expect, because when I came here I was feeling pretty jaded about brunch. No matter how many ways you do an eggs benedict, it still ends up tasting like an eggs benedict. What could this cozy, counter-order establishment offer in a town saturated with options?
We were greeted at the counter by Tamara, and after paying for our order, we seated ourselves. It was a busy day, so understandably the kitchen had a lot of orders to fill, but at one point I saw what looked like my order come towards my table... only to go to its rightful owner. Jokingly, I made a sad face, but Tamara saw me and made a sad face back. A few minutes later, our food came, along with a biscuit donut on the house! She apologized for the wait, and honestly, it wasn't even that long of a wait, but we were floored by this gesture. It's so rare nowadays to experience such warm customer service, and we could really feel how much love and care she has for this restaurant.
Did I mention that our food was amazing? I had the fried chicken benny, and I was expecting the biscuit to be heavy and choke me like a Popeye's biscuit would, but I was blown away by how buttery soft and crumbly it was. The chicken was also perfectly fried, and the eggs perfectly runny, and even the green onions were fresher than my outfit that day. It was such a good combination of flavours, and I couldn't stop eating until it was all gone, and at one point I felt light-headed at how amazing everything tasted. It was as if the food gave me a hug, because I felt warm, satisfied, and slightly more freed from my childhood trauma.
Would I come back again? Yes. All the other benedicts in town should be scared. Chewie's has the brunch game down lock.
