Me and my friend spent two nights at Chez Allen right in the middle of the Christmas holiday. It was a blessing to get a room because quite frankly, the mountains of Sri Lanka are packed with international and local tourists alike during this time.
Chez Allen is a beautiful hotel with small details and decorations that was quite the contrast from the low-budget homestays I’d been staying during my Sri Lanka trip. For us, it was sort of a “treat yourself” weekend, as the price is higher than our usual stays. The room we had was spacious with a gorgeous view of the mountains from the balcony. We could watch the sunset from the balcony which was another bonus.
There are fireplaces in the common area of each floor at the hotel, which was one of the reasons we chose this hotel in particular. Unfortunately, we never got to enjoy an actual fire. On the first night we were there, they weren’t able to get wood. On the second night, there happened to be a large part of over 30 guests (I think they were a big family or perhaps a wedding party) who sort of took over the entire hotel. My friend and I were not aware that this party was coming, and with them taking up all the common area space, it left us feeling rather “stuck” in the confides of our room. Because of this, we did not get to enjoy the fire that was made with the wood we had requested. I understand that sometimes big parties book up hotels, but I think this could’ve been communicate this to us ahead of time, or even upon booking. The party was loud, so we ended up listening to their conversation into the night. This party taking over all the common spaces, without our prior knowledge, was the downside of our stay for me. I wish the hotel had told us in advance, or even offered a small discount for the inconvenience of not really being able to enjoy the hotel space and putting up with all the noise.
The staff went out of their way to accommodate making us a special breakfast menu on our first morning. This was incredibly kind, as their menu only offers western breakfast, and we were preferring Sri Lankan style breakfast (when in Sri Lanka, am I right?). Unfortunately on the second morning they were not able to accommodate us in this way, I suspect because they had their hands full with the large party of people. Not a big deal, but worth noting.
Overall I felt that the staff was kind and accommodating to our needs. The hotel is beautifully situated right outside of the heart of Nuwara Eliya, which not only helps price wise but also was a welcomed break from the overcrowded heart of the city.
