Chez Fred

We had the best evening there to kick off our Antwerp weekend. The waiter was so charming and very sympathetic. The tartare a la minute with fries. was delicious. Nice atmosphere, fine dining in a relaxed and cute bistro. Totally recommend!

It seems that we have visited on the wrong day. First half an hour, no one came to attend our table, so I went to the bar to ask some help but I stood there for couple of minutes with no success. other guests arrived well after us were served already. Then finally we ordered our drinks and food, but it took half an hour to get our appetiser, while others were served faster... We saw other guests also waving their hands to get staff’s attentions few times. Food was great and actually, staff was friendly once you get their attention, but it was an eternal battle to get the attention. Due to our rising frustrations during first hour of the evening, we could not enjoy the entire experiences. It is a shame because food was actually great! I hope it was just an unlucky day...

Cozy atmosphere, fast service and quite cheap for the portion size. This is a low key casual place serving traditional fare (think shrimp croquettes, which were excellent btw and steak frites). The meat quality was ok, but nothing you couldn't find at your local butcher. We asked for it to be done blue but it was slightly overcooked. The wine list is not exactly spectacular either with a selection of roughly 4 bottles red & white - all priced below 30€. Conclusion: have low expectations, don't be too fussy for the price you're paying, go with friends to have a good time.

Cozy place. Good and tasty food, so as their desserts but not the best service in the world, oh and a little bit pricey! They sometimes take your glass of wine before you finished it....

Nice atmosphere, make sure you try croquets and Belgium stew! Beware, they are open till late evening, however their kitchen closes at 21h!

I do like this place; it's recommended by a local Antwerp friend. They serve Authentic Belgium cuisine. Language is a challenge. Not every restaurants have English menu, so we tried our best. I had Belgium stew which was delicious. Beef was so tender and flavorful. Others were white fish and chicken which were also delicious. The staff is friendly with limited English skills. Seatings are limited and I little bit crowded. Food portions are not big, so I was good but not very full. I will come back here to try different things. Great place for brunch on Sundays, while visiting the antique and bric-a-brac shops along the Kloosterstraat. Very friendly service and prices that are easy on the pocket. Popular with arts and media crowd Gets rather full on Sunday mornings, but hey, that shows how popular Chez Fred is!

Not sure why this place was rated 3.5, but my experience here has been fairly positive. The first time, I had the lamb and the second a spaghetti bolognese. Both dishes were very good, especially the lamb which was perfectly cooked.
