Strange observation, but most everyone at the start of dinner hours was over the age of 50.
I don't know if this was either a good, or bad observation.
Chez Jules had been on my list for Quebec City. It was a place serving the French classics, which is entirely what I was looking forward to. I'll save the avant garde Quebecois fusions for another trip. Give me some classics, a nice window view, in the beautiful old town.
Chez Jules delivered beautifully on my expectations.
Reservations are definitely needed. We stopped in on a Thursday night, and barely squeaked in on their listing after calling a head of time. Within minutes the room was filled with patrons ordering glasses of wine and sharing stories in their proud francais. Am I still in North America? Honestly, I felt slightly overdressed in my dress slacks. Most everyone was dressed casually, but neatly.
The server was generous, attentive and courteous. She answered our questions when we noticed a small jar of pickles at the table, but were not familiar with the custom.
Salmon Tartare was ordered, and while it was fine -- It wasn't my favorite.
The bread they serve is warm and pillowy and the butter is creamy like the finest brie cheese.
I ordered the 7 hours lamb, which melted in your mouth. The husband ordered the Duck Confit, which fell off the bone and no effort required.
Dessert was the Chocolate Mousse, which surpassed my favorite version in the states. The homemade cookie that accompanied it only intensified the sugar rush.
Overall, I really like Chez Jules. I was really worried about the touristy aspect most of the Old town receives in Quebec City, but everything was done well and met my expectations. Dinner ended, and we shuffled back out to the cobble-stoned streets, past the Chinese Tourists, and back into reality.
Full bellies, and a delectable and enchanting end to a stay in Quebec City.
