"A Niçoise institution for nearly 100 years, Chez Pipo specializes in socca , a chickpea-flour flatbread that comes out of the restaurant’s wood-fired ovens looking like a giant pizza. Their motto, “ Aqui si mangia la socca,” says it all— socca is the only dish they serve, alongside a selection of Provençale spreads like tapenades made with anchovies, artichokes, olives, or sun-dried tomatoes. Seating is on a large terrace during summer months or in a wood-trimmed dining room for shade or winter dining. The line outside can get long, but because of the simple menu and well-trained staff, the service moves quickly."

Great authentic Nicoise fare here at Chez Pipo! A terrific, tapas style menu, brings you the best portions of delightful local fare. Given the modest prices and fair portion sizes, it's easy to select 3 or 4 dishes to accompany your choice of wine, beer, and spirits without busting your waistline or your wallet. I arrived around 6:30 to a few empty tables, but it filled up fast after that. The staff moved quickly to seat guests but you never feel rushed to finish and leave. This is a terrific spot to taste Nice, located in the old city. A delight to walk to, and just a few streets from the port, which makes for a lovely walk afterwards. Don't miss Chez Pipo!

Google
A Must-Stop for Socca Lovers! If you’re in Nice and haven’t been to Chez Pipo, are you even doing it right? This place serves up some of the best socca in town—crispy, warm, and absolutely delicious. Perfectly golden with that slightly smoky flavor that makes you wonder why you’re not eating this every day. The terrace is a total vibe—laid-back, sunny, and ideal for kicking back with a cold beer and a plate of socca. Whether you’re people-watching or just soaking up the Riviera chill, it’s a great spot to relax. Friendly staff, quick service, and great food. 10/10 would socca again.

Google
This was recommended to me by someone who has often visited Nice & didn’t disappoint. Food was great. I’d not had socca before & loved it. I’d also recommend being bold & opting for the mystery dessert.

Everything we tried at this traditional restaurant was delicious, though our favorites were the socca and the lemon mousse. We stopped in twice, and while it was extremely busy each time, the friendly staff found a spot for us. I can’t imagine a better place to try classic Nicoise specialties.

Google
first time trying socca and found it oddly nostalgic~ we ordered the scallion one. interesting texture, slightly reminiscent of irish potato pancake/boxty. and the flavour profile reminds me of taiwanese scallion pancakes. love finding similarities between cuisines. we enjoyed this!

Google
This place was recommended to me because of their famous Socca (kind of pancake made from chickpeas). I never tried this dish before and I was amazed by the taste and the technique they used to bake it. At this place you can enjoy various snacks for a few euros. We also tried a dessert. It was also very delicious. I would visit this place again. The service was very pleasant and also the other restaurant guest were very friendly. The atmosphere in this restaurant is cozy.

Google
Probably the best socca in Nice! Chez Pipo is the perfect place to just stop for a quick snack and drink. Usually crowded so consider that. If available take a seat outside - adds so much to the experience! Definitely recommend this place!

Google
Very famous socca restaurant close to the port. It is very crowded at peak hours, but the service is very fast with the possibility to eat both inside and outside. Socca was very tasty, and pissaladerie is a must try too.

Yelp
Out of every restaurant I tried on my trip to Nice, I'd say that Chez Pipo had the most authentic food. I had found it even before coming to the city and my host was in complete agreement that I should try it. The first sign of impending success was that the staff was extremely understanding of my hurry, as I had to get to the airport to leave for Germany in about three hours, and made it a point to serve us quickly without compromising on the food at all. We were the first to arrive and thus ate the very first socca made for the day, and it was incredibly crunchy and fresh, like a perfect french fry, potato chip, or anything of the like. This is the sort of thing you could eat all day long and will forever be the standard by which socca is judged. And yet we also found the pissaladière very tender and not overly crispy or doughy, with a mild flavor from the onions and anchovies on top. The mystère for dessert was also incredibly well fashioned with crumbled pieces of hazelnut on top not once interfering with the texture of the frozen ice cream and pastry, or the meringue buried inside to represent the titular "mystery." It is one of the most unique and tasty desserts I've had in some time and I'd gladly order it again next time I visit Nice. For that matter, everything at this place was perfect. It isn't fancy, it's basically a Niçoise tapas house that concentrates on a few classics and has perfected them, and that is why you come. This could not have been a better way to finish my trip to Nice, and to France in general.

Yelp
A nice and quick spot to get your niçoise fix in! I love that their socca come with additional ingredients, like cebettes (green onions), and it reminds me of Taiwanese green onion pancakes. I wish their hours are longer (open earlier in the day) and there are few more options for food (and for kids).

Yelp
Super Cool place! Food, service, atmosphere, everything was perfect! Wish I lived here to come back on the daily.

Yelp
Great variety of local Nice dishes! Very "nice" indeed. We got the Pisaladieres which we loved since we are big fans of caramelized onions. Of course, we got the famous Socca - we got the green onions and sardines ones, both of which were freshly prepared and excellent. For dessert, we got the famous Tourte. Apparently it is made out of spinach but it tasted very sweet and not really like vegetables. We also got a Panache, which is a mix of lemonade and beer. I would recommend trying all the items on the menu!

Yelp
The Quick: Great socca but frustrating experience. Insanely slow service, can't even pay when you want to leave, very small portion making it more expensive than everywhere else. No "to go" option and staff was a disaster. The Details: Service in France s*cks, I get it... but this place takes the cake. If you can convince them to let you get socca to go and don't mind paying double the price do it! Not a huge price/- 6 euro for double portion as it's tiny, instead of 3 euro elsewhere. Socca is the easiest snack to eat while exploring Nice, here it's an hour and a half ordeal, not worth it for me. The Damage: 3euro for single portion but it's small so definitely get a double for ~ 6 euro

Yelp
Our tour guide had recommended us to try socca, a pancake made with chickpeas that was a popular food item of Nice. This restaurant had it on their menu and seemed to be the nearest from where we were so we chose this place. The socca was crunchy and was good. A bit bland aside from the chickpea taste, a flavor my companion wasn't all that into. While everything on the menu seemed to be quite inexpensive, the portions are barely filling.

Yelp
Really cute place to sit outside during the day. We arrived 15 mins after it opened and had to wait extra (30 mins) for the socca because the chef was not in yet. Luckily other things on the menu were able to keep is appetizer in the meanwhile. The place definitely got crowded quick! The socca and the pissaladiere is a must try. The socca was crunchy and super savory I wish I had access to this to munch on weekly! We had the pepper and the cheese one - both great! These are all small portions, so it means you can try more! Although you think it's super good deal when you first look at the menu, for a meal to fill your belly it ends up being similar to a regular main. I think service can be more friendly but definitely efficient and acceptable. Definitely recommend and a must try when in Nice. 4.5/5*

Yelp
While in Nice a few weeks ago with the bf, we decided that we ought to try out some unique Nicoise dishes, and this place came up for us on Yelp. We decided to try it out and while there, we were alerted that the regular socca would be ready in about an hour's time. Since we were willing to try some of the other variants, there was no wait. I tried their pissaladiere and the bf got their simple socca with a mesclun salad on the side. We also got an order of their tomato and artichoke tartinade spreads. Now, I guess the price points were an indicator of how small the portions would be, but the best way that I could describe the portion sizes here would be tapas-sized. We had finished our respective meals, but were still slightly hungry. Our food was fine, but our respective flatbreads, for lack of a better collective term, came out kind of lukewarm. I'm not sure if that's how socca or pissaladiere are normally served, but admittedly, it was not as appealing to our American palates. If you didn't get a chance to actually go to this restaurant and wanted to try out some socca before heading back to your respective city/town, you could order at their NCE airport location, so there is that opportunity as well. I mean, for 3 Euros or even less, you should at least try some of this humble Nicoise dish.

April G.

Yelp
Best Socca (chickpea pancake cooked in olive oil) I had in Nice. It was worth the wait. (15-20 mins)

Lauren D.

Yelp
The food was delicious! I had pissaladière, socca, salad, and mini pan bagnat. Everything was good! It took a while to be seated and served but it was also reasonable considering the circumstances (COVID and the restaurant was busy)

Yelp
I had no idea socca could be so good. Chez Pipo was the only restaurant I wanted to go to in all of Nice. We ended up rushing and needing to take our socca to go, but we were kindly accommodated and within a few minutes, we had pipping hot socca in a to-go bag. It was perfect. It was thin, crispy, salty, and so satisfying. I love that this regional delicacy is naturally vegan, and that I could participate by eating at the best socca joint in all of Nice. Lots of restaurants were closed in January, but Chez Pipo was going strong. If you're in Nice, no matter what time of year, you have to visit!

Yelp
Great restaurant with amazing cozy atmosphere and traditional local food. Perfect customer service and great recommendations from the menu. Absolutely must stop in Nice.

Yelp
My first and only socca experience in Nice, which is a popular dish in this particular city. The restaurant was small and had that older rustic vibe like most restaurants in Europe. We went with the black and green Tartidanes, which were good but a bit on the salty side. They are served with hard bread, crouton like. I think I would have preferred just regular style baguette bread. Apparently the socca takes some time to make as there was a 20 minute wait for the stuff. While waiting for the socca, one of the employees went on a French yelling rant that was rather dramatic. Even the other French patrons and employee's were a bit bothered by this guys child-like tantrum. He then went into the kitchen, throwing dishes and proceeded to yell. Kind of entertaining to say the least. My socca finally came and I thought it was pretty good, like a savory crispy pancake. Also ordered their apple and spinach tart for dessert, which was interesting and tasty. I would definitely come back, if not for the socca, perhaps an angry outburst from an employee...

Yelp
Wow, this is good. I read about the place and I was absolutely not disappointed. This is fingerfood when it's best and it's worth visiting the place. We had socca, salad, tappanade and good wine for very fair price. The place is very autentic and the staff is nice.

Yelp
The hype this place has got is absolutely warranted. I'd had socca was a dish specific to the region and worth trying. I'd earlier tried some from a vendor in old Town and was at a loss over why people seemed to like this dessert. Saw all the raves of this place so went to check it out. This place fills up FAST! I luckily got there at 5:45PM just before the crowd from 6 started flooding in. Place was full in no time and others were waiting. I got the socca and a glass of rose to go with it of course. My perception of the dish was totally changed. Solo good!!! Turns out there can be a stark difference in the taste of a really simple dish. It was salty but not too much, crisp, crunch and exquisite. If I'm ever back in Nice I know where to get my socca fix
google avatar

Yasaman S.

Yelp
Nice & cozy place to eat with affordable prices. We had 2 appetizers, 2 drinks, 1 double socca & dessert, added up to 24€ Appetizer is good but not special, I am no expert on socca but I loved this one, nice taste, crispy top and soft bottom. The Rose wine was also very good. I think it defenatly worth the visit. If u plan to go, be prepared for long waiting time. For dinner, be there not later than 18:00 or u may need to wait for minutes just to be seated. If u r really hungry, order appetizer also, socca will not come any time soon! And be prepared: they don't accept credit cards.
google avatar

Yelp
Very fun place. You can sit indoor our outdoor. If you sit inside you can watch the chef make socca. Great options for vegans - try the socca with tomato and artichoke or the plain socca. Busy place but great service and atmosphere.
google avatar

Lisa T.

Yelp
Got lucky to snag an outdoor table about 30 minutes prior to close. Just came for the Socca, which was crisp on the surface and flavorful - agree with previous reports! Come early if you want any of the garnished socca - only original was left at the time of our visit. Service friendly but a bit spotty - no water until we asked - possibly because of our timing. Would definitely go back.

Yelp
First things first.. The socca is delish! It's crispy yet soft and flavoursome but not overwhelming. The onion focaccia was also a highlight. The bread was warm and fresh and the onions were plentiful. We also ordered the aubergine and sundried tomato croutons.. This was just ok. A lot of the croutons were burnt and the portion sizing of the dips was a bit small for the amount of croutons you were given. Service was great. The waiters were very lovely. We arrived just after one pm and we were lucky enough to get the last free table for two. Because the dish was so popular we also had to wait for thirty minutes before our socca was ready. Which is fine because we happily spent that waiting time eating the other items and drinking wine. This is a must visit if you are in Nice. Not overrated at all.

Yelp
Went here for the Socco after several people recommended it. Quick, affordable, and delicious!

Yelp
Socca. Get the socca. I was told by my host that Nice is a city known for it's socca. My host also told me that he wasn't a big fan of it. We got food at some random other joint that just happened to have some socca so we ordered it and he was right in saying that it'd be kind of bland. The next night I was walking alone looking for food and just happened to walk past Chez Pipo. I saw a cook pull a giant pan of socca out of a hell-fire oven. I was memorized by the piping hot platter of fresh socca. It was an omen (I've been reading 'The Alchemist'). The socca tasted like the omen foretold it would. The rest of the food was average, though. I went back and told my host about it and he said he had heard of it and that it's probably the most famous place for socca in the city, but that he hadn't tried it. So that explains it. Never judge a food by a bad restaurant. Come here and get the socca to understand what it's all about.

Ana B.

Yelp
We went to taste socca and tipical nizard food and we didn't regret it. Really good food, not expensive, and their service was even better! As we don't speak french, the waitress explain the menu in spanish! We just wait for a table 10 minutes (saturday night) and the food arrived just 5 minutes after. Great place to meet with friends/family and have a good time!

Yelp
Unsure of where to go eat when we arrived in Nice, we consulted good ol' Yelp to see what was good around old Nice. After being rejected by a few restaurants because they were fully booked on weeknights and closed on weekends, we decided to give this place a try as they are famous for their Socca - a specialty dish in Nice. We sat out in the patio and was quickly greeted by the waiter. We got the Socca (chickpea pancake) and the Pissaladiere (focaccia with caramalized onions and anchovies). We also got a glass of Rosé which was very refreshing but the glass is quite small. The spread we got with our toasted slices of bread as a complimentary starter was really good too (eggplant and tomato spread). Very chill and the staff was really nice and patient despite our French not being the greatest. It's not a place you'd go for dinner though as there's no dinner food but a good place to just chill with friends to snack and drink.
google avatar

Angie C.

Yelp
Shoulda read all the reviews. Socca. This is what this place is famous for, also because really this all they really serve. They have some tapenades's mini pizza and foccacia like bread a mini sandwhich and a small mes clun salad. This is the menu. So. Go for a drink, a snack. But not a meal, especially when you have to wait in line and then wait for the socca. But the socca was good, although I have no others to compare to.
google avatar

Alice R.

Yelp
Such a great place! Had never tried socca and this was a great introduction. Service excellent and waiters very friendly and attentive. One problem is that they took a while to bring me my check, and then I didn't have time to collect my change so I ended up spending $20 on a $10 meal, good aside from that though

Mighty M.

Yelp
The first time I came to Nice in 2009 I wasn't a big fan of socca. When I came back in April 2011, I just had to try it again because it is so specific to this city. I'm so happy I did! This restaurant is a bit of a walk from Central Nice and Old Nice, but my God is it worth it. The socca is hot, fresh, and perfectly cooked with a crispy brown top. Pair it with the rosé and you have a classic Niçois combination. We also tried the onion tart, and it was fantastic. This was the first time we had ever asked for another round of everything. The staff are also very nice and accommodating. I highly recommend it.
google avatar

Danielle C.

Yelp
Love Pipo. Best place in Nice for socca (chickpea flour and olive oil pancakes cooked in a wood fire oven) for me. Make sure to have a rose wine and grab either a pizza or a pissaladiere :)
google avatar

Alyssa N.

Yelp
This was my favorite socca in Nice. This place is awesome. Super friendly staff, straightforward and inexpensive menu. I had the socca, mesclun greens, and rose - a perfect lunch. You'll definitely need to order the double socca.
google avatar

Charlie C.

Yelp
We had lunch here and really enjoyed the experience. I thought the tapenade was excellent and very creative. The socca was good and piping hot. It was excellent for a casual lunch as we explored the Old Town.
google avatar

Nadia S.

Yelp
I went here to pick up some socca after many recommendations.. it was right across the street from where I stayed, so I had to try it out.. The soccas are super delicious!! but I've to be honest - I haven't had it before, and have nothing to compare it with.. Nevertheless, it's super tasty!
google avatar

Jeff R.

Yelp
Cheap, but: - very limited choice - tiny courses (need 3 or 4 for an adult) - long wait (30 minutes for a Socca) - no credit card accepted
google avatar

Paul H.

Yelp
You go for the socca. There's a few other appetizer-like dishes on the menu, but, as the restaurant's motto goes, "Here, you eat the socca." It's very good and very, very fresh. And you watch it being made in the prominent brick oven.
google avatar

Kian M.

Yelp
We loved this place! We came on our first night in Nice to try the socca and we were not disappointed. At first, the menu confused us because we weren't sure what socca actually was and why everything was so cheap!! However the food we got was delicious and we are planning to return tonight. They don't make reservations here so come early; by about 8 pm there was a line going down the street!
google avatar

Katlyn G.

Yelp
Went for the socca! So good ! Glad I went here for my first socca after reading the reviews. Very yummy and good service too. Also really cheap and worth it. We got the Provençale and Tomato tartinades as well
google avatar

Qype User (mvd…)

Yelp
This is the best socca of Nice! the socca is a typical local dish made of cheek peas and olive oil. It has to be thin and crispy yet never dry. You have to add a lot of pepper and use your fingers to eat it. At pipo, you'll always have to queue to get your portion, but this is really worth it. I recommend a little glass of Rosé wine!
google avatar

Qype User (totall…)

Yelp
A Niçois institution, it's likely that this place really does serve the best socca in town cooked to perfection, thin, crispy (just a little tender in the middle). It's something of a victim of its own success, though, as the waits stack up; in the tourist season expect to wait for a table, and then your drink, and then your food. And I mean wait like a half hour for the table, ten minutes for your drink, and half an hour for your food. Service is however polite and friendly, and if the food weren't worth the wait, people wouldn't do so. It's great value three of us ate enough to satisfy (with wine, no dessert) for around EUR15 per head. So, if you're trying to cultivate patience as part of a self-improvement course, this is definitely the place to come. And you'll be rewarded with cheap, delicious (vegan, if you avoid the pizza) food.
google avatar

Frederic B.

Yelp
Been there twice in 2 weeks - Great Socca and other simple street food. This is a relax place and the staff is helpful.
google avatar

Rox V.

Yelp
Really great socca. Order it as soon as you get there as it takes about 40 minutes to be made. This is not a place to go for dinner if you have a bunch of starving people though. Their menu is quite limited to lovely tapenades and croutons, personal cheese pizza, green salad, and the typical nicose onion tart. Really enjoyed their food. Prices are average.
google avatar

Brittany H.

Yelp
the best socca in nice. socca is like a pizza made from chickpeas. nothing beats the brick oven where they make the socca in... it's not only fresh and piping hot...but it leaves the top crust a nicely charred flavor. do yourself a favor and try it with a bottle of rose. the best combination ever. opens for dinner service only around 5:30pm. it's quite a distance from Old Town but WELL WORTH the trip my friend.... last thing to note... socca appears to be like pizza...which means people here have a preference...if you like chez pipo (the crust being crisp and charred) then you won't like chez rene socca which is much softer and has almost no crust. it's more of a mushy texture. i'm a ny style pizza type of gal... i like em thin and crispy, while still gooey and soft in the middle. Chez Pipo does just that. crispy on top and soft underneath, in my opinion the perfect combination for a socca.
google avatar

Jillian L.

Yelp
Cute spot for a bite of socca and glass of wine away from the hubbub of the old city. Friendly and attentive servers and a nice outdoor seating area. Nothing spectacular, but an inexpensive and reliable place for a late afternoon or early evening nosh in the port.
google avatar

Chris P.

Yelp
There's only one thing to really get, the socca and it's out of this world. Chewy on one side and crispy on the other, it tastes burnt in all the right ways.
google avatar

Phil J.

Yelp
I made a special side trip to nice partially just for the socca here. I waited in line for half an hour. Still worth it.
google avatar

Alana S.

Yelp
You have to try the Socca! I've never tasted anything like it. It's fresh out of the oven and crisp and tasty. It's one of those things you should try when you come to Nice, something different. Sometimes this place gets crowded, but the wait isn't too long becasue they keep the Socca coming out of the oven constantly.

Ann H.

Yelp
Good food, and unlike others didn't have to wait for a table (we went at 8pm). The socca is good, but I think we enjoyed the mini sandwiches the most. English was easily understood which made ordering easy. A great place for lunch or a mid-afternoon snack, but not a place I would recommend for dinner due to the very limited menu (socca, tapanades, pizza, mesclun and mini sandwiches are pretty much it).

Ella B.

Yelp
Probably the best socca in Nice, but then again you have to like socca! It's pizzaish made from chickpeas and a bit lacking in flavor though a local staple! The service at Chez pipo is great, and arguably I think the appetizers including the local onion tart and dips were much better than the socca. Wine was great and the service while slow (it was an hour wait for socca on a friday night). Very affordable, and if you are a foodie or want to try the original local this is where you should go!
google avatar

Hannah H.

Yelp
For what they do, I'm giving the place five stars. The other reviews are right, the socca is delicious! To be fair we didn't try it at any other place in Nice, but I'm happy with our one decision to try Chez Pipo. It's got more of a lunch feel than a dinner place as the menu is very limited, but we did our best to try a bit of everything and were pleased. My boyfriend and I sat outside and enjoyed a long lunch of a pissaladiere, two of the tartinades, a double order of socca, a tourte de blettes and a large bottle (followed by a small bottle) of rose. Everything was delicious! We went around 1pm and didn't have to wait at all for a table and the service was very friendly. I would definitely recommend for a casual lunch with tasty food and a good bottle of rose (or two).
google avatar

Robert K.

Yelp
Meh! 3€ for a few slivers of fried chickpea paste. You've got better things to do with your time and money! Their waiter cleaning the sidewalk table next to us tossed the used napkins in the street! A very tacky place.
google avatar

Qype User (alelun…)

Yelp
I loved it! The best socca in Nice, quite different from the others: crispy and thin. Very savoury! Served hot, out of the oven. One double portion is enough for two persons (about 8 pieces). Usually goes with a mesclun salad (mixed salad).

Yelp
Best Socca in Nice. In the port zone, good price, friendly and kind service. Similar to italian trattoria, but with Nice taste. ;-)
