Finally I was able to try Socca. It’s like pancake made with hummus flour. New taste for me and I like it. I suggest more creative way of presentation 😅. Delicious and price was affordable. Thank you so much

Decent place for affordable food. I liked the socca, but the pan bagnat was rather bland (it’s really big, however). The service was very friendly even when the place got super busy. Card payments are accepted for purchases of €10 or more. Must order drinks to dine in.

Two of us had all these! And they are amazing! The socca, fish, chicken, they are all very tasty. They have a policy where you have to order a drink if you want to have a seat. We were standing eating and it was not bad at all. Strongly recommended.

Google
Great place to try Socca when in Nice. You have to queue up at the counters to order. The queue goes round the corner past two counters. If you sit inside you have to order a drink (table service). A bit confusing for the first time visitor, but still worth a visit.

Avoid! Such a rude service! Never ever again! No idea why people make such a line… guess it’s only for tourists! We got some food with my friend and we took a sit and guess what… the waiter was super rude and asked us to go away as we did it want to order drinks. The lady who was selling us food never mentioned we have to buy drinks! We could not leave with plates so we had to eat while standing! Mamy tables were empty! Then he complained we even stand! And was calling other waiters to see us and they were lounging… happy we made theirs day! But really… will never understand this aggression while you can normally talk to your clients!

Nice little open area for seating, weather was great as well this day too. You first order food at the food counter. Then you can take a seat where a waiter will come and get your drink order. We got Socca, pissaladiere, an olive slice of pizza and lastly some sort of breaded fish bites (sorry I don't know the name). My favorite was the pissaladiere, this was really nice as well as the fish bites, nice to spray a bit of lemon juice on it. Had 2 different glasses of Rose to wash down the food. Nice chill place to relax and eat.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 One of the best places for Socca in Nice! It’s our go-to stop in Old Town for authentic Niçoise style street food - Socca (chickpea pancake crispy on the outside, soft on the inside); Petit Farcis (local-style meat-stuffed vegetables); Beignets de Fleurs de Courgettes (crispy zucchini flower fritters when in season); Pissaladière (savory onion tart with olives and anchovies; grilled sardines and more! Definitely recommended for tasty local snack-style stop! 🥘🇫🇷

Delicious taste sensation created in a real fire oven. So authentic and tasty! You have to try this place. Not very many places cook in this way, and it adds such flavour. Not to be missed!

Yelp
Here's a hint: they have a big long line of locals waiting to buy take/away lunch, and the friendly local waiting in line with me told me that they serve the best socca in Nice. I've only gotten take away here, but it has all been beyond delicious. If you're craving anything fried, or want to try a plate of farcis, this is your spot.

Yelp
This was recommended to me by a tour guide as the one of the most authentic places for socca and other traditional nicoise foods. It was undoubtedly my worst dining experience in Nice. I had the socca, pissaladiere, and polenta with ragout, sharing with friends. The polenta was tolerable. Everything else was greasy and bland, and the socca was burnt and crispy. At first, I assumed it was supposed to be that way, but the next day, I tried socca at a market and it was much, much better. Service at the bar was extremely rude. I wouldn't go back.

Yelp
Lives up to reputation. Long lines outside. Great food. Lots if side dishes you can add. Not expensive. Lots of table space outside. Great local food and flavor. Worth a visit if you are in Nice!

Yelp
Average place with a long line. This place has some serious sanitation issues with pigeons flying in and out of the kitchen. The people serving food had ash all over their hands & didn't wash them or wear gloves. The food is average & not worth the line. Stay away and get socca at a better place that is cheaper, cleaner & tastier.

Yelp
My guidebook mentioned socca of course and even talked about this establishment in particular. So while we were strolling around town I was telling my boyfriend that we should go find the place for a casual dinner. He was already hungry though and asked if we can stop somewhere for a snack. He sees the stalls here and suggests we stop here. We see they have socca and were like 'oh cool' but eventually realize we had stumbled upon Chez Rene Socca after all! We had a laugh about it, picked a table, and got a plate of socca as well as a few other small plates of food and washed it down with rosé. The food is good and inexpensive and trying out this regional specialty should definitely be part of your trip.

Yelp
Don't believe the hype about this place. It is decidedly below average. The socca is tasteless and mutilated by the server. It comes out looking like a mess. It's texture is mushy and it's also cold. The onion bites were full of oil and had no flavour. The onion tart had dry bread and the onions themselves weren't great. The apple tart was the only thing that was ok. And that's only because they mostly tasted like straight up apples. Be aware as well that if you want to be in the seated area next to the food place it is mandatory that you buy drinks from the bar. We didn't know this and were told by the waiter only after we had sat down and ordered all our food to "eat here". Another way for them to squeeze your tourist dollars out of you. Go to Chez Pipo instead. You will not be disappointed there.

Yelp
Convenient location in old Nice to try socca, one of the local specialities. (Fried chick pea flour product). Sooo yummy when it's piping hot! Lots of other niçoise specialties too like stuffed peppers and pizza. What they don't tell you is that there's a mandatory beverage if you sit down - I don't have an issue with that, but they need to tell you that if they're giving you a choice of takeaway or eating at their tables!

Yelp
Great spot to try the Nice speciality. Line inevitable but $3 is well worth it for a good sized pile of fresh socca. Also tried the sardines which were fishy and filling. Bones in was tough to get past but still finished it all. Prices are fair and line moves as fast as it can. Would say that ordering for here is ridiculous as they won't let you sit unless you order a drink. Recommendation to add a bar area to eat standing up otherwise a spot to visit in Nice.

Yelp
As Guardian approved fare, we were looking forward to our visit to Bar René Socca during our recent trip to Nice. I'd read some reviews on here and Trip Advisor, and assumed people were being a bit sensitive about the grumpy waiters asking them to move if they hadn't bought wine (as you can only sit down if you're sitting in the bar area, which means you had to buy a drink too). I thought the reviewers might be taking out their bitterness unfairly on some delicious Niçois snack. Actually, it's just not that great. We got a socca each, which is well worth trying and only 3EUR. That was too much though. It's a kind of mix between a pancake and pizza crust, made with chickpea flour. There is no dip or anything that comes with it, so it's just a bit dry and they give you a lot, so it's difficult to get through. My recommendation is to get a socca for two to share, and then one of the other things. A socca each is a bit much I reckon. As for the bar, yeah, they're pretty grumpy and the wine we had wasn't very nice, and wasn't particularly cheap either. They only take cash. Overall, definitely get some socca whilst you're in Nice, to give it a try. You may as well go here, but if you hear about another better place then go there instead.

Yelp
I recently visited Nice for the first time and knew I had to try socca. This place was perfect! We went here 2x during our 5 day stay. The socca was delish and the sangria was the best I've had! The zuchinni flowers are greasy but yummy. A great place for lunch or dinner that's fun and cheap. The girl who serves up the socca from the giant pan was warm and fun. The place was always buzzing with quite the line. One tip: eat the blackened part! It adds so much flavor.

Kate B.

Yelp
So socca (fried chick pea pancake) is a Nicoise specialty that you must try when you are in Nice. I was honestly really skeptical about trying it because it just doesn't look very appealing to me, but since my boyfriend was adamant about trying it, I gave it a shot! The line was ridiculously long, or it just took a long time. We stood in line for at least 30 minutes to get the socca since they are made fresh. The socca is like a thick pancake, but it isn't really sweet or salty. It's hard to describe the taste, so I guess you will just have to try it for yourself. Other than the socca, they offer a lot of fried food - fish, veggies, etc. We had the zucchini flowers but for some reason, it was served cold. Not the best tasting or most flavorful, but socca is definitely something you should try when you are in Nice!

Carissa D.

Yelp
Recommend to me by my tour guide. All I had was the socca. It was a good price (3€), and very delicious. Couldn't finish it all, it was pretty large!

Alyssa N.

Yelp
The prices are good and the socca is yummy and crisp while it's hot, but you'll have to stand on line for it. Then you find a seat and a waiter to order a drink to go with it. I do not recommend the pissaladiere which was cold. Stick with the socca here.

Dan H.

Yelp
A must if you visit Nice. The Soca was amazing and fresh. You buy the soca at one counter then a server gets you drinks- a little weird, but we didn't mind. Enjoy!

Laura S.

Yelp
Opens early in morning for those needing a socca fix or other treats (many savory options available like onion and ratatouille tartes). This was my 1st time trying socca, so can't compare it, but thought it was very good. Came fresh out of the oven and available to go (aka "emporter" or "take away"). Salt and pepper packets were by the side window, but I enjoyed it plain. There is a restaurant and to go window area of restaurant, right across from each other. I ordered from the food window and it took approx 8 min to get my food.

Yelp
I live in the region, am a fan of socca and have tried it at many places. René's is one of the best for socca, and I've been here a few times. However, there's one arrogant, nasty waiter who just completely ruins the experience. Without going into the gory details, let's just say that this guy is mal élevé and has no savoir vivre. He continued his unpleasant behaviour even after my friend repeatedly told him that what he was doing wasn't funny and asked him to stop. The worst part is he had done the exact same thing like 3 months earlier, during another visit. He was unmoved when my friend said they would not longer have her business, and he never apologised. René Socca has now lost not one but two customers, and actually two more because my friend was going to bring her parents there - but not anymore. À éviter! You can get good socca elsewhere.

Don W.

Yelp
Very casual place with dirty wood tables and on a sloping street. I'm no expert, but I think the Socca is pretty authentic here and as good as it would be anywhere. Wait in line to get your Socca and a waiter will come by to get your drink order. A good place for the Socca experience, but not a good date night location.

Isabel A.

Yelp
the socca is ok, but that's it. the minipizzas are really bad, the wine too, the wine also too expensive, the waiters arrogant, and everywhere flying rats (= pidgeons), even pidgeonshit on the seats

David H.

Yelp
The socca here is really good, but the service is awful! All the employees in the restaurant had awful scowls on their faces, as if they were dying to be somewhere else. They just couldn't be bothered. Good socca's really not hard to find in Nice. I'll go elsewhere in the future.

Kyle G.

Yelp
Yum! The socca was awesome. I loved watching them chop and scrape it piping hot right off of the drum. The pissaladiére was nothing special, and they were a bit rude about the mandatory beverage policy, although ordering an inexpensive glass of wine as certainly not an issue. But go for the socca!
