A beautiful campus that needs more focus on local history.
I recently visited the museum and was impressed by the organization and the sheer size of the grounds. It is a well-maintained space with plenty of room to move around, and the architecture itself is stunning. However, I left feeling that the content didn't quite live up to the museum's name.
The Pros:
Well-Organized: The layout is clean, and the galleries are easy to navigate.
Spacious: There is plenty of vacant space, making the visit feel relaxed rather than crowded.
The Cons:
Pricing: The entry fees feel quite high compared to the depth of the exhibits currently on display.
Lack of Maratha History: Given that this museum is in Mumbai and named after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, I was disappointed to find very few items related to his life, the reign of Dharamveer Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, or the brave Mavalas who fought alongside them.
Misplaced Focus: A significant amount of space is dedicated to art and cutlery. While these are nice to look at, they feel like a waste of space when compared to the rich, heroic history of Maharashtra that remains untold here.
My Suggestion: We need more galleries dedicated to our Hindu Kings and the properties they used. Before Indian independence, there were monumental battles fought by our kings to keep this land and culture safe. The museum should prioritize artifacts, weaponry, and documents belonging to the Maratha Empire and the local culture of Maharashtra.
I hope the management considers replacing some of the decorative displays with more historically significant items that honor our true heritage.
