10 Ethical Animal Places to Visit in 2019

"Set in Thailand’s Chiang Mai province, Elephant Nature Park provides a sanctuary to rescued elephants from around the country.  Originally founded in 1990, Elephant Nature Park is roughly 60 kilometers from Chiang Mai city, tucked away in the picturesque hills of Northern Thailand. Serving as a rescue and rehabilitation center for elephants from around the country, Elephant Nature Park is—simply put—the ethical way to enjoy the company of a pachyderm when in Asia.  In Thailand, elephant populations have decreased significantly from 100,000 a century ago to now a measly 3,000 estimated elephants remaining. The decline in elephant numbers is namely due to the animals being used for the tourism and logging industries, which subjects these magnificent creatures to harrowing abuse.  For tourists, riding an elephant or purchasing a painting from a pachyderm may seem harmless enough, but it is the “training” techniques used to have the animals perform such feats that are cause for concern. Mahouts—a term for men who work with elephants in Southeast Asia—often subject their animals to barbaric forms of physical abuse to intimidate, scare, and ultimately break the spirit of the elephant.  At Elephant Nature Park, the rescued elephants who arrive at the sanctuary can often come with broken bones, psychological issues, and baring the scars of years of abuse. The silver lining is Elephant Nature Park fights to save these animals and give them a stress-free environment where volunteers can spend time with the elephants in an ethical way.  From feeding the elephants copious amounts of watermelon to walking alongside them as they meander down the river, to simply watching them play in the mud, Elephant Nature Park puts the focus on the wellbeing of its animals. In short, a visit to this sanctuary is how animal tourism should be: putting the animal first." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Exceptional service and tour. They pick up and drive you back to your hotel, clothes are offered there upon your arrival to protect you from insects and herbs and you have the opportunity to see the elephants completely free and interact with them supported by their keepers. After spending time with elephants feeding, bathing and taking care of them they serve you homemade Thai food on a lunch area with an incredible view. They have a small souvenir shop where you can get unique pieces and support the family on the costs of the elephants care. Before going back to the hotel they drive you to a waterfall where you can swim and enjoy the end of the day. Cold water is available during all the activity and journey. Big thanks to Te, our guide, who did this incredible experience even better.

My sister and I did the 2 day 1 night hiking and elephant experience and I highly recommend it! We hiked to beautiful waterfalls and learned so much about the area and the elephants. Our guide, Limbo, was so knowable, friendly, and funny. He made the experience so amazing. Staying in the bungalow was unforgettable. We literally woke up to an elephant outside our room and fed him. Meals were delicious and the care/love they have for their elephants is beautiful! You are able to get up close with the elephants during the mud bath and more! 10/10 experience.

Wonderful experience with Perla and her friend! We had the tour with the rafting and cascade viewing, super moments shared together, definitely come with your swimwear and sandals! The elephants were super friendly and very interested in food 🤣 Thank you for the amazing memories and photos you took for us. Big up to Eywa and AJ most photogenic elephants I've met :)

Great experience. We were lucky to see a baby elephant as well! Great fun feeding the elephants and felt we had ample time with them. Well organised half day experience. Most people were happy to bathe with the elephants and have a mud bath with them too! Change / shower facilities provided.

Had a lovely enjoyable afternoon in the elephant sanctuary. Picked us up within 1.5 hours of last minute booking at our hotel. Our guide Perla gave us an educational tour on the story of the Asian elephant and their environment. She was informative and obliging helpimg our needs and questions. It was very good of them to provide sufficient bottled water as it does get very hot and hats were provided.

My wife and I did a 2 day one night stay here. It was very nice and relaxing. We started off with bamboo rafting down a river, then did a hike in the hills. We saw plenty of elephants about. The second day was spent in the reserve with the elephants when we got up very close to them! Overall we had plenty of time with the eleplnts and also time to relax. We are vegetarian and they catered for our diet. The overnight accommodation was good, and the beds were comfortable, there was even WiFi. Note that it is in the Thai countryside so mosquitoes (especially in the evening) and ants are about, but so are butterflies and we even saw a firefly! The reserve is very big and pretty, and the area around the rooms is very nice with swings and hammocks to use.

I went here today and it was fantastic! I was with a nice couple and it was just 3 of us in the group. Our guide Perla was very friendly, knowledgeable and answered all our questions. We made food for the elephants and fed them, before going for a walk, having lunch ourselves and the giving our elephant a mud bath. It's a great place and very reasonably priced. Would highly recommend!

Several random people recommended this Elephant home to us. They said that is one of a few that has truly local elephants. We had a wonderful half-day experience here. Getting up close to the elephants was amazing. We first made them a healthy snack, fed them, rubbed on some mud, and then washed it off in the river (even though it was full of elephant poop, nobody really cared about that). Sam kept us entertained with small jokes and interesting information the whole time. After washing ourselves in showers and enjoying a pretty good lunch, we visited a nice waterfall in the afternoon. The transport from and to the hotel was included. Overall, it was a great experience.
