Chiang Mai International Airport

Chiang Mai International Airport is one of those rare airports that manages to feel efficient, relaxed, and welcoming all at once. From arrival to departure, the experience is refreshingly smooth. What stands out immediately is the manageable size. Unlike sprawling mega-airports, everything here feels logically laid out and easy to navigate. Immigration, baggage claim, and security processes tend to move quickly, which takes a surprising amount of stress out of travel. The atmosphere reflects Chiang Mai itself — calm, friendly, and slightly unhurried in the best possible way. Staff are typically polite and helpful, and the overall environment feels far less chaotic than most international gateways. Despite its size, the airport offers everything you realistically need. There’s a solid selection of cafés, small restaurants, and shops for last-minute snacks, coffee, or souvenirs. Seating areas are comfortable, and the terminal maintains a clean, well-kept appearance. Another major advantage is location. Being so close to the city means you’re not facing a long, exhausting commute after a flight. Within minutes, you’re already immersed in Chiang Mai rather than stuck in traffic. In short, Chiang Mai International Airport delivers exactly what travelers hope for but rarely get: simplicity, efficiency, and a surprisingly pleasant travel experience. It feels less like an obstacle in your journey and more like a gentle transition into or out of Northern Thailand.

This airport wasn’t bad except for one major annoying thing. Before you get your passport checked, you have to go fill out some iPad form. There was so much information you had to type in and the iPad and keyboard was tiny, barely visible. Also the browser kept closing kept closing. It seemed very insecure. You then had to take a picture of the QR code and show the immigration agents. It all was incredibly cumbersome and tedious. After you got passed, the staff was pretty nice. The information staff was helpful. The taxi was easy and reasonably priced, not a scam. The immigration hassle needs to be resolved immiefuatwly though, I had heard many other passengers complaining too. Totally unprofessional.

Fairly large airport, well run , very easy to get to from the town centre (20 mins,),, you can buy food here and drinks here, can be a lot of queues for checking inn, when we was there if he was massive to check in so they opened another lane dedicated just to our flight so no one was late, which I thought was a nice touch,, but I would leave myself more time than usual in case this kind of thing doesn’t happen but there are always queueing. I’ve been here several times before and experience queue after queue

Small but fast. Easy to find the way out. Grab outside near the Gate 1. Helpful staff and people. There’s a good money exchange inside airport just near the exit gate with 30.xxB for each $ name bangkok bank. While the next shop also in airport is 28-29B for 1usd. Always bring passport to exchange money.

Late January 2026 Fairly large international airport but has the characteristically busy and jam packed Thailand atmosphere. Lots of small stores that are local as well as some international brands. Gates are prescribed for easy pickup and drop-off points.

It was our first time visiting Chiangmai, we arrived in Bangkok Air but departed for BKK in Thai Airways after staying for 4 nights here. The airport has shown its age however it was well managed, security scanning after immigration was detailed which we felt a bit inconvenient however it was for the safe flight for all passengers. There are several F&B outlets, souvenirs and convenience shops to allow last minute shopping. Flight took off smoothly and uneventful, we were thankful for all staff working at the airport for making this journey possible for us.

A small sized airport but handles fairly good air traffic. Since the crowd is less you can check in quite late and the immigration and security check is quick enough. There’s lots of food options to take away. Taxi and car rental services are available at the arrival gates. Local sim is also available. There are many souvenir shops. There’s a separate checkin and boarding line for Buddhist monk and novice.

The airport’s organization was absolutely unacceptable. I wouldn’t wish this level of stress on anyone. How can they schedule so many departures at the same time at such a tiny airport? I ended up spending almost six hours there on November 7, 2025. After entering the terminal, it was so crowded that for several minutes I couldn’t even figure out where to check in my baggage. The lack of organization was shocking. I initially stood in a line for Thai Lion Air, with people constantly cutting in. Eventually, we were all told to go to the back of another line — which turned out to be the main line, not even specific to our airline. All flights were delayed. Airport staff were walking around holding signs above their heads, trying to locate passengers for various flights. After waiting 2.5 hours just to check in, a separate line was finally created for my flight, but I still had to wait another 45 minutes to have my checked luggage weighed. Despite checking in online, I was suddenly informed that our group would be moved to a different flight — with no explanation about whether the original one was overbooked or had left without its passengers. Then we had to stand in yet another line to have our checked baggage scanned (a first in my life), followed by the security line, where we were only fast-tracked because we were traveling with two small children. We rushed to the gate, only to have all of our carry-on luggage taken because we were considered “extra” passengers. After that, we waited on an uncomfortably cold bus to be transported to the aircraft. They even mixed up the planes — we were shuttled from one aircraft to another, and on the second plane we had to wait for passengers who had boarded the wrong one to disembark. I finally boarded at 5:10 p.m., but the plane stayed on the ground while waiting for other delayed passengers who were stuck in the same chaos. We eventually departed around 6:35 p.m. Nearly six hours at the airport. Completely unacceptable
