This Barcelona Hotel Blurs the Lines Between Past and Present - Hotels Above Par - Boutique Hotels & Travel

"Housed in a former small palace that later became a school, this four-star boutique reinvents historic architecture while preserving its original framework and aims for a subtly seductive atmosphere. Dark hallways are lit by multi-colored room-number lights and long beaded curtains, which also appear inside the minimalist guest rooms that feature floor-to-ceiling mirrors, large beds with crisp white linens, and LED lighting controllable by remote; several rooms have balconies overlooking the bustling El Born streets and the greenery lining Carrer de la Princesa. Bathrooms are private but not always concealed—some rooms showcase crystal showers placed in the middle of the chamber. The property doubles as a local gathering spot: an all-day café and bar serves buffet breakfast and coffee, cocktails, and tapas from noon to midnight, and nearby residents now frequently share the communal spaces after initial skepticism about the hotel’s provocative design. A dedicated community floor balances white walls and marble floors with black leather sofas and lamps and offers self-service “Helpyourself” drinks, a quiet “Beyourself” area, and a “Loveyourself” room for fitness. The small property has 31 rooms across several categories, positions itself as a sleek, sexy hideaway in El Born, and lists room rates beginning around $109/night."

We loved staying at the chic&basic Born Hotel--before and after an MSC cruise out of Barcelona. The room was perfectly adequate--charming and comfortable. The bed was very comfortable and the shower was as good as any anywhere. The people at the desk are enormously helpful and the location is terrific--near the Picasso Museum, the MOCA Museum, the Chocolate Museum, etc. Enjoy breakfast or lunch at Honest Greens and hang out at the world's best café--Bohème. An Uber to Sagra Familia is inexpensive and we even walked back after our visit. For dinner, Muricecchi, across the street from the hotel is terrific (but it gets crowded after 7:30 so for late eating, make a reservation). For a nice dinner of tapas, Orvay is also nearby--an easy walk. And the hotel sends you home with presents. :-)

I found Chic and Basic Born via Booking.Com when looking for accomodation as I was attending a conference at the International Conference Centre. The hotel is exactly what is says on the tin, Chic and Basic but you have everything you need and the slightly quirky decor really make the hotel stay and experience. The location of the hotel is great for the centre of town, the marina and the Gothic quarter and really convenient when travelling to the confernece centre. What makes the hotel are the staff, freindly, helpful, attentive, they really made the stay a pleasure for me. I'll hopefully be back to stay but this time for pleasure and not work.

At my age, finding fault and getting annoyed are about the only two things one gets better at. I’d read a few gloomy reviews before arriving at Chic & Basic Born and was expecting to be underwhelmed. Instead, I found a clean, friendly and generous hotel in one of the best locations imaginable.||Our room was spotless and comfortable with high ceilings and plenty of character. The lounge on our floor had good reading material, teas, coffee, biscuits and small muffins and downstairs there was a generous supply of fresh fruit for guests.||The staff were genuinely welcoming and helpful. Step outside and you’re immediately part of Barcelona’s human landscape — lots of people out walking, plenty of life in the streets, great bars and restaurants all around. A perfect base for exploring this beautiful city.||We liked it so much we’ve already booked to return at the end of our trip.

Stayed for a week. If you have other options but have to pay a bit more, do that. It's a survivable experience but several things broken and nothing done about it despite me notifying staff. Bizarre plastic thread curtains in front of every door and blocking the hallways so you have to push through them constantly (see photo). Very slippery shower steps and bathroom floors. Generally unbothered staff. Cleaning was good. Location great.

⸻||This hotel is… strange. The location is fantastic, but that’s honestly the only real highlight. The price is outrageous for what you actually get.||The room felt old and neglected, and it definitely wasn’t properly cleaned-dust in the corners and just a general lack of care. The shower being in the room might have been meant as a quirky design choice, but in reality it just doesn’t work. The bed was tiny- yes, I booked a single, but it felt more like a child’s bed.||Noise is another issue-you can hear everything from your neighbors and from outside. The plastic curtain strips across the doors are a bizarre touch too. You can’t walk down the hallway without getting smacked in the face by them, and the hallways themselves are really dark.||Overall, it feels like the concept was aiming for creative boutique, but without the basics of comfort, cleanliness, and upkeep. For the price they’re charging, it’s just not worth||Have to add , staff were very friendly .

The hotel is in an old refurbished (office?) building. The rooms are a bit “different” then in regular hotels: very high ceilings, coloured lights at the ceiling, a very big bathroom with traces of old water connections. The room didn’t look clean and the lightswitches especially in the bathroom were very dirty. Nespresso coffee machine was very nice. Location is good. Girls in the reception were very friendly and helpful.

We had a wonderful stay here! The location is perfect — central yet quiet, just steps from the charming El Born district. The hotel is clean, stylish, and absolutely dog-friendly, which made traveling with our pup so easy. What touched us most was the hospitality: we had 3 hours to spare before our train and were welcomed to rest in the lobby without any pressure. The staff were warm, helpful, and truly made us feel at home. Great value for the price. Highly recommend — especially for travelers with dogs or anyone looking for a relaxed, well-located stay in Barcelona.

Nice location, room was spacious, but not sure I would want to stay here with a partner (very little privacy, glass door into toilet, glass shower right in the center of the room). Had to move rooms because aircon was not working (in Barcelona heat), the phone wasnt working so I had to trek all the way to reception which isn’t close, to ask for a move. Reception area is quite nice though for food and work. Staff was fine, helpful, though not overly hospitable. Not sure I would stay here again.

Yelp
Received a message from this hotel after we already left the States for Spain stating that they had not been open for 17 months and would not be open for our reservation because of Covid. We booked this hotel months ago. They did offer offer to put us up in their Velvet location, however the location was not good for us. Shame on Chic & Basic for taking reservations with out knowing if they'd be open. We had to scramble to find another hotel at a higher rate since it is within a few weeks of our stay. Covid has been rough. I feel for businesses, but you cannot do this to people traveling long distances and counting on a place to stay. Transparency would have been nice. Maybe a message after booking providing the important info, allowing us the decision to keep our reservation but also have a back up location in case operations continue to cease.
