15 Best Things to Do in Puerto Rico | Condé Nast Traveler

"On weekends, La Placita de Santurce farmers' market is a packed-to-the-gills party featuring small bars and restaurants. The central market is housed in a historic building, giving the revelry a truly escapist feel. But the real joy here is getting a rum drink in a plastic cup and walking around while taking in the sights. There are excellent restaurants on the outskirts, as well, including Jungle Bird , Santaella , and Mai Pen Rai." - Alicia Kennedy

Chicharrón was amazing with it service, atmosphere and food. Plenty of seating inside and outside. They had the best seafood paella I ever had. My wife and I enjoyed every moment and would definitely go back. We recommend it to everyone. There is a parking lot up the street which makes it easy to park. Chicharrón also validates your parking for a discounted rate. It’s definitely worth the trip.

Food was cold. The soup needed more taste...the meat was not tender. Most of all the cocktail (Margarita) was served in a plastic cup! I requested a glass...did not looked or tasted like a Margarita and the rim was table salt!! Service, a fork was dirty, no spoons when soup arrived and the plates were not placed on the table, if you know what I mean. I might...but not sure, give it another chance.

Carlos provided us good drinks and great food recommendations and service. He recommended the garlic sauce with the veggie mofungo we ordered and LET 👏🏽 TELL👏🏽 YOU 👏🏽!!! So goooood! He live music while he was slinging drinks was the cherry on top.

What an awful experience! First, we had to wait ages for the waiter to take our order. When he finally came, it turned out that half the menu wasn’t available. I had chosen three items, and none of them were in stock, so I had to quickly pick something else. Second, the staff was extremely rude. Waiters would literally throw plates on the tables and disappear, and their overall attitude was terrible. Third, the food was disappointing. The chicharrón was way too hard—I almost broke my teeth. The paella wasn’t properly prepared, tasted very salty, and even had small pieces of mussel shells mixed in, which were unpleasantly crunchy. And Piña Coladas served in tiny plastic cups? Seriously? Overall, a terrible experience.

Google
Great service and delicious food. We had alcapuria and ceviche to start. I had the avocado stuffed with corned beef, topped with a perfectly crispy but runny fried egg, and side of rice and beans. My husband had the mofongo with steak. Everything was delicious and portions were generous.

Google
The food, atmosphere and service was amazing. Antonio did a great job at explaining everything to us and guiding us to make some of the best dinning and drink choices. The octopus and Tostones were incredible and perfectly done-one of the best we’ve had in Puerto Rico. The Rum old fashion was really a treat. The crème brûlée at the end was the highlight of our dining experience. We will definitely be back -five out of five stars all day long.

As a 21 years Tour guide , I had visited hundreds of restaurants, but this one won the award. I decided to take my sister and her friend here and to my surprise. If your group is 5 or more you have to tip 18% if you like the food or not. My sister order stuffed avocado with chicken and didn’t have taste, and the avocado was green to hard to eat. When we asked the young man that took our order told us that was good avocado. I told him I was a local and a tour guide and definitely I knew. Then he ask us if we want something else and we order fried plantain. And to our disappointment, was frozen or deep fried twice, which is a mistake with cooking plantains. Why is cook twice or frozen? Because y brown. My sister friend had similar experience with her plate and I ordered pork shop Can can was good but the masposteado (yellow rice) nightmare. The server told us that even if we didn’t like the food we have to pay the 18% tip. I warned you! Do visit this restaurant photo of the recipe was only one order.

The best Salmon I ever had and the mojitos by Carlos were the best Osvaldo the best waiter. You guys must try it

Yelp
I've always love Puerto Rican food. I travel to PR all the time but tonight, I've found a gem. Food is amazing. Portion is decent compare to other places. Ingredients are fresh. Must try the friend plantain and seafood paella, taste good Price is reasonable. NOT much tourists, so if you like more of local vibe, this is the place!!!

Yelp
We were told to list our names (8:30pm) and they would call/text. Never received either. We had to inquire within and we were finally seated at 925pm. We placed our order and drinks. We received our first round of drink and placed our order but never saw the waiter again after that. When we asked how long the wait would be for our food (45 min waiting at this point) we were told that the food takes anywhere between an hour and a half or more. It is now 10:30pm and we are still waiting for our food and at least a second round of drinks to keep us occupied but nothing. I would not recommend! A full restaurant doesn't always mean good food, sometimes it means the people seated have been waiting forever! Update: so we finally received our food. Close to 11pm and here is what we received. An over cooked salmon and an over cooked steak! When we brought it up to the manager, he offered a garlic sauce for the salmon and was pretty upset that we complained about the steak. He was not friendly at all! Never again!

Yelp
The evening started off well with our server Maritza. She shared some specials for the evening and we were excited to try some food as this was our first time in PR. We got the Croquetas with Chorizo and Risotto which were Underwhelming to say the least. I was expecting Atleast a chorizo flavor seeing as there was no actual meat inside of the croqueta. Disappointing. We asked her to ensure that we had gotten the right order and she said yes and that the chorizo was cooked into the Risotto...o too if that they were lukewarm borderline cold. We told her this also and she offered to heat them in the microwave for us. Disappointed. We tried a few different menu items. The margaritas and mojitos were Delicious. For entrees we tried the Grilled Octopus, and Chicharrón crusted Mahi Mahi over Malanga. Octopus was cooked well but lacked flavor. A chimichurri would have made this excellent. The Mahi Mahi was awful. Whatever the coating was that they used was sweet..like sugary sweet and can you imagine eating fish that tasted like it was dipped in sugar? Didn't eat eat. Ended up going with just Rice and Beans and was satisfied with that. Our server had become visibly irritated and began avoiding our table altogether. We were finally ready to close out and she brought the check and as we paid she reminded us of the suggested tip to leave. We paid for the meal with a card and decided to use cash for the tip (which was already MORE than the highest suggested amount). As we're paying Maritza is HOVERING over my friend as she's paying and reminds her again of the suggested tip. My friend says that we will pay the tip in cash again, hoping that will satisfy her. Once she finished with the Credit card machine she hovers over the table for Atleast a minute as we're putting on our jackets to leave and the cash tip is sitting on the table and she reaches across our personal belongings and snatched it. Again..disappointed. The drinks were good but I'd never come back to this place.

Yelp
I wasn't impressed with the chicken mofongo. It was very dry in my opinion. But ambiance was great.

Yelp
What a wonderful place! If you find yourself wandering around Santurce you'll find an area with lots of restaurants and only one obvious choice- Chicharrón! The food is SO good. Lots of amazing PR cuisine on the menu and a few options just for kids, too. The eggplant parmesan and mofungo were highlights. Our server was great. The ambiance was pleasant and there were nice and clean bathrooms. We definitely enjoyed the AC on a hot day, but there's plenty of outdoor seating. A good time had by all!

Yelp
Can't really review the service because our names were taken for a table. We waited, we were called because the table was ready and when we arrived the guy at the door told us they were "closed" it's 9 PM on Saturday night... The website states they are open until 1 am. Update: We are elsewhere and just happen to end up on the same street again... They are very much open 2 hrs after they told us they were closed. We knew this was a racist move from the beginning but glad it was confirmed.

Yelp
Located in la placita in San Juan this establishment is outstanding. The food and service were both great. We were so hungry we forgot to take pics of the food but everything we ordered was delicious. As an appetizer we ordered the grilled octopus (pulpo a la plancha) which was AMAZING! I ordered the salmon a la plancha which was the best I've had; it came with a side of rice and beans and OMG so flavorful! My husband ordered the chicken stuffed with shrimp wrapped in bacon which he said was delicious as well! Definitely a must if your in the area and you want a good filling meal! They have an extensive menu that includes tacos, pasta and chicken tenders so the options are great for picky eaters and kids!

Yelp
Took family to dinner Wednesday evening based on recommendation. Food came out cold and they seemed annoyed. Skirt steaks were cold to Luke warm. Ordered premium margaritas and unfortunately one drink spilled on uneven table. Owner charged us for drink. Warning mgmt does not care as I personally told owner I would let credit card company handle this. Stay away as you have many choice and simply avoid this establishmen

Yelp
The food and drinks are absolutely incredible. We got a variety of food, from the house mash with mahi mahi, to the Mac and cheese and burger. Amazing. Highly recommend the rice as well. Our waitress was very attentive and had a great knowledge of the menu. Would definitely come back here again.
google avatar

Taylor K.

Yelp
The food here was pretty good! Expect it to be busy and the food to take a while. I got the chicharrón de pollo and it was very flavorful and juicy. The tostones were a bit dry but overall our whole group was happy with the food and our drinks. It's a bit more expensive than other places in the area.

Yelp
Came here on a Tuesday night . Seafood was fresh and drinks very tasty . Good service and nice ambience . Sat on the outdoor patio . Nice vibe .

Yelp
Our last visit in Puerto Rico recently had us craving some authentic Puerto Rican food. When in such a beautiful island with many great food options it's hard to choose one place. After some review this placed popped up and we decided to give it a try. We ordered the steak and rice , empanadas and fried green plantains. Pros- the food comes out quick ,great location in the nightlife area. Tons of bars and restaurants walking distance. Cons - food is pricey , long wait times , taste of food is off. We did enjoy our stay but I'm giving it the stars because the food did not taste all that great to be honest and transparent.

Garrett H.

Yelp
Terrible service. Waitress was so rude, stopped checking in on us after we got our drinks. Waited almost an hour and a half for food which ranged from okay to stale and not fresh to gross. We had to argue to get an appetizer off the bill after we all took a bite and knew something in it was bad. Eat somewhere else in the area.

Yelp
Terrible experience. Food was horrible. We asked for utensils and they said they ran out.... Nothing about it was good.
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
Great great food! Nice authentic PR style and the house made sangria was really tasty! Service was good. Attentive waiter and helpful on the different dishes to taste the rice was soooo good! We loved this place!
google avatar

Jacqueline S.

Yelp
The food was amazing. Delicious. We where seated right away , with a choice of either inside or outside. We chose inside. The food was prepared quickly. Probably the best chicken, white rice and beans I've had. So glad I came and we will be back .

Yelp
Worst experience ever.... Chicken stinks... and afterwards we have to pay for that. Awful. The owner has NOT of how to run a business.

Yelp
I was recently visiting San Juan on business. A local friend of mine took me to this restaurant, which I've thought was amazing. The service was wonderful and the food was stupendous. I had the mofungo and skirt steak. If you're visiting San Juan it's a good choice if you're looking for a place to eat

Yelp
Oh my gosh, how I wish my group had looked at reviews instead of taking a recommendation for this place! We put our name and number down for a 45-1 hour wait. Whatever, the place was packed and there was other stuff to do while we waited. Well an hour came and we hadn't heard a thing so we went back to ask what was happening. The host said a table was ready so we sat down. We sat around watching other people sat near us get a waiter and finally the person we assumed was the host came to take our orders. All we wanted was 3 shots of tequila and a can of coke to drink. Then we ordered two dishes. Told us it was gonna be 45 minutes for the food. Realistically we should have left right then and there but we stuck it out since we would at least have form drinks. The drinks never showed up, and to say we were mad was an understatement. Literally watched people say after us get drinks and food while we sat there with NOTHING for at least an hour. Our food eventually came with nothing to drink. So we canceled the drink, ate the most mediocre food, and just wanted the bill so we could finally leave. Waited thought giving us a free can of coke was the way to make the experience better. It was such a let down it basically ruined the night.

Yelp
Party of 14. They sat us in. Little room In the back by ourselves. That was the best part of the meal. Server comes and takes drink orders and we hd a few mistakes. 2 of the people in our party changed their orders but the server did not catch it. Both drinks came for them. When we pointed this out she argued and said we wanted 2 drinks and did not take it a way. Some people never got drinks until we asked 2nd time. We were leery at this point if the food orders were going to be ok and of course they were not. Messed up quite a few orders and even got rotten pork chops. Worst experience I ever had in Puerto Rico. Walk on by and go to another place!
google avatar

Gg N.

Yelp
Mediocre drinks! Pricey compared to the low-key seating- plastic tables, chairs! We tried several items: Appetizers: tostones, guava and cheese, empanadas. Guava and cheese was the highlight!! It was yummy. Tostones and empanadas lacked flavor. Empanadas were not crispy at all!! lomo de cerdo relleno, overly dry and not tender meat The rice was on the bland side. Fish mahi/ seamed just boiled. It's in a touristic area I guess that is why it's still in business! Stay away, there are lots of places around!
google avatar

Carolina I.

Yelp
What I order was not a disappointment. How everything was delicious. Empanadas de chorizo, chuleta Kan kan and dessert tres leches de coco. Might take a while for food to come out but it's worth the wait. Delicious from the drink to the appetizer to the entrée to dessert. Came here since I was on a 7 day cruise and one of the stop.. Puerto Rico.

Yelp
1st and foremost I am very disappointed in this restaurant. Let's start with the host who claimed he called our reservation number 7 times mean while called the wrong number. We waited almost an hour to be sat. We sit and get told that your food won't be ready till over an our we decided to wait. We waited almost 2 hours for our food. We got our food and it was not even good. My grandfather who is 80 years old literally wanted an avocado salad. They seriously made 5 slices of avacado with 7 piece of mixed greats. I felt bad for the server because she was really nice and doing her best. We still tipped her well because again this is not her fault. I blame this on poor management and not having a limit capacity in place. The host needs to seriously step his game up or get fired. He was no help and just laughing this whole time. La Placita needs to get rid of this place as it is a true disappointment to the Puerto Rican Culture.
google avatar

Bryanna C.

Yelp
BEWARE IF YOU HAVE A FOOD ALLERGY OR TASTE BUDS. food was disgusting. They use the same pans to cook both fish and meat. The meat tasted like fish and we had someone with a seafood allergy. The manager was disrespectful and did not care about our needs. And even called the police on us instead of accommodating us. Terrible experience. Go somewhere elseeeee
google avatar

Jasmine T.

Yelp
I went to Puerto Rico on vacation and because the place next door was closed, we came to LA Chiccharon. To play it safe I went w chicken stuffed Avocado which only comes w rice. I ordered a side of beans and plantains. I ended up mixing the beans and rice w the Avocado and loving it. The chicken was tough but I ate a few pieces. And of course the sweet plantains were great. I also had a drink here that I loved. It's like a coconut mule. Chiche or something close to that. Hooooowever, my girls did not enjoy their meals. They ordered steak Caesar salads and there was none. Only one type of dressing for the garden salad. Steak was well done as opposed to med well. Egg on the sandwich was undercooked then over cooked and missing the original yolk. But it kept us out of the rain so that's good.

Bryan R.

Yelp
This is should be a no star because there is absolutely no reason to anyone should visit this establishment and that is from a local who lives nearby. We waited 20 min for a waiter another 30 min for appetizers then we had to ask for our drinks that we ordered after the first 20 min wait which took another 20 min. The entire was (fresh fish) was absolutely disgusting. From a local perspective this restaurant has turned into nothing but tourist trap. Do yourself a favor and go back to Ashford

Lisa N.

Yelp
Fun ambiance. Food was so so good. Tres cerdos in the back. Tostones. The alcapurrias was my favorite. And of course, mojito

Yelp
Hi there! At the Placita so let's talk about this experience... I had el Chillo frito as you can see below; lovely presentation...Large fish, fresh however a bit saltycamarrones and salad, delish as was the tostones de panna (that's a must try). Husband, well that's another story... Ordered the filet that didn't look like a filet, nor had taste (bland). He took two bites, and off to the side it went. Our server, Mari, was very attentiveinquired what was wrong. Despite, my husband not wanting to complain, she brought over the manager and they were very courteous asking if he wanted another meal. Husband graciously refused. In any event they attempted to remedy the situation, our meal had a discount and Mari brought him over a complimentary drink. Despite his meal being all wrong, the attention and customer service was excellent. Everyone has "off days", maybe it was the chefs night to have a turn

Anas H.

Yelp
The salmon with wine and the rice was exquisite! My got the mofungo de camaron and she really enjoyed it!

Alex R.

Yelp
Food was ok, service was not too responsive, and it was like rushing to get us out. The plates did not came in order and some of the food came cold.

Reshma K.

Yelp
We had a nice time here this evening. The vibe was amazing. Enjoyed the liveliness from the music, the hustle bustle. We had no problem finding a seating for two. I noticed it got busier and lines got longer after we were seated. And it poured; the outdoors roof provided sufficient shelter from the rains. We ordered a house margarita and a mango mojito along with some calamari. The drinks were good. The calamari was much larger than what we usually get at other restaurants. The texture was a bit chewy. The batter separated from the calamari. It wasn't the best calamari but it was good. Our server was really nice, he was attentive despite how busy it got and he was minding quite a few tables. There was a long pause before our meals arrived. Our server did apologize for the delay. We had ordered shrimp tacos and mufongo with chicken for our mains. After a really l-o-n-g wait our meals finally made it to our table. The shrimp in the tacos were over cooked to the point that it was inedible. We had to return this back. The long delay also dampened our appetite and we didn't want to order anything else. The mufongo was good, the server had recommended the garlic sauce (instead of the tomato sauce) and he was right on. The portion was large and I couldn't finish even half of it. And the mufongo was very filling. For the great service, location and vibe this place deserves a few stars but sadly the food missed the mark.

Yelp
This restaurant was such a pleasure to eat at! The staff were so welcoming and kind and our server was so prompt and attentive to our needs. And the food! Wow, was so delicious and filled with so many flavors. Presentation of food was also beautiful. We got 2 different Pechuga Rellenas and were blown away. Had to end the night getting a tres leches which was great. Thank you Chicharrón!

Yelp
chicharrón en la placita is a quality visit ! i was greeted warmly by the staff & owner - was tended by the master bartender ramon which by the way makes the best mojitos , i tried the coconut mojito it was splendid - authentic puerto rican mojito de coco w coco milk y don q ! the owner recommended the smoked chicharrón de pollo when i inquired about them while surveying the online menu - let me jus say im puerto rican from the bronx so smoked chicharrón de pollo is not a common dish the custom way you always find them on menus is fried -smoked is amazing ! soft , moist & succulent . the flavor is memorable , theyre served w tostones & a side cup of mayo-ketchup perfect w a medalla light afterwards had to try their coco mojito then end it with another rarity carrot cake tres leches that too was delicious . when in la placita visit chicharrón its a great meal w welcoming staff & owner jose (pictured w me )

Yelp
Food is meh. Not bad. Not good. Fish ceviche was good, everything else is nothing to write home about
google avatar

Mica R.

Yelp
This is the spot.. good service (Antonio) was very helpful explaining foods and the popular items. Definitely a good choice if your spending time in Las Placinta!
google avatar

Liliana L.

Yelp
False advertising. $4 mojitos, it's an old banner from last year and not honoring it any more. The service is horrible. Our food took over an hour to get to us and very disappointed. Chicken tenders were old and over fried. The tostones were the frozen ones. The bathroom is smelly, not clean. Not a good place to eat. The prices over priced for disgusting food.

Krystal R.

Yelp
We came in a Friday night for a dinner for two. Took 30 minutes for a seat. Then another 20 for a waiter to ask us if we want a drink. We also asked for water. Never received the water. The waited brought the wrong drinks and didn't come back for another 20 min. Then we ordered appetizers chicharrón de pollo y tostones, spicy crab nachos. The crab was imitation, and not spicy. The chicharrón de pollo was salty. We ate our appetizers and no one approached us for about 1 hour. The waiter disappeared. We decided to just leave and have dinner elsewhere . The couple next to us sat at the right after us still has not received their meal. Terrible service.
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
This place is so good that I have eaten here several times over the last few months. Whether you sit and outside or inside table, service is great. Bartenders make drinks just right. If you visit for lunch, try the Alcapurrias and you won't be disappointed. My favorite dish is the ChichaBowl: a bed of white rice and beans, sweet plantains, avocado, pork rinds, and a protein of your choice (I went with chicken chicharron). If you want, you can substitute some items.

Action J.

Yelp
served us soggy raw coconut shrimp. they were out of almost everything too. extremely disappointed, i've never had bad coconut shrimp before, spit it out as soon as i bit into it.
google avatar

Norma B.

Yelp
Second visit to try more things on the menu. Once again delicious food. You must have the chicharrón de pollo ahumado (Fried smoked chicken chunks) in appetizers. Its amazing! The Lomo de Cerdo relleno de loganiza y yuca con demi glaze de guayaba with Mamposteao rice....its also one of the best meals I've had. First visit all was excellent. The cocktails are delicious as well...must try their Mojito de Coco...amazeballs.

Sherrlyn B.

Yelp
Waited an unreasonable amount of time for our food. The restaurant was not crowded, and they were waiters and waitresses just standing around. The owner stands guard out front but is not friendly or welcoming. This restaurant has a lot of room for improvement. Food was mediocre, service was terrible. Servers don't write down orders (which I thought was a sign of an experience). However, our waiter forgot items and/or brought the wrong order. And to top it off, they try to charge you for the order even after admitting their error. The owner is watching the whole time but does not step in- looks like he's more concerned with his posture and profile. Ridiculous...i'm not going back.
google avatar

Jessi S.

Yelp
Waited 30 minutes for a table for two on a Friday night. We were sat outside, but did not get a server for awhile (granted they were busy and had a hiring sign posted). When we put our drinks and food in, our order was mixed up and we missed some drinks and were charged for a dish we didn't order. We had the longaniza, alcapurria, and kan kan pork. The food was alright, the pork was extremely salty, but still fatty and tasty.
google avatar

Ana A.

Yelp
Pros: the food was tasty. Our group got a variety of different plates. Cons: Took about 50 minutes for us to get our food (group of six), burgers were well done when we asked for medium-rare, and we all got diarrhea afterwards.

Kaelee C.

Yelp
SERVER PAOLA. Man when i say I never almost wanted to fight a server. we clarified our order TWICE it was repeated back to us and everything. She brought out the wrong plate we said nicely we didn't order that. This bitch starts YELLING POINTING HER FINGER IN OUR FACE. I get its loud outside but me and my friends are talking in normal voices. Instead of just taking the plate to the back she PUTS THE PLATE in front of my friend and refuses to take it back. But yeah almost whooped this hoe yall.

Jane K.

Yelp
I was recommended this spot for being popular in La Placita. Very friendly staff, quick paced and attentive. Food was generally pretty good but my salmon entrée was amazing! The salmon came topped with capers and a white wine/garlic dressing with their house mixed rice. Salmon was cooked perfect, tasted very fresh, and went extremely well with the capers and the dressing. I loved their house rice as well, it came with dried cranberries and complimented the salmon very well. The margaritas were a little on the weaker side in terms of tequila, but they were quick to correct that! The restaurant is busy and on the noisier side but a great place to grab a bite before hitting the other bars in this area.

Hunter M.

Yelp
An abject failure from the top down. After almost 3 hours we left hungry and increasingly bewildered by anyone caring or even giving the semblance of giving a crap. Ownership was a failure and the lack of even a simple apology was baffling. Shame on you.
google avatar

Ana M.

Yelp
Very bad service and disappointing food. Took them an hour to bring only nachos and the waiter trick us to and charge us tip without checking the amount. Not recommended at all

Yelp
First time at this place and it has become on of my favorite spots on the island. We visited the Placita in Santurce and we were hungry. We decided to visit this place because right off the bat it was pleasing to the eye. We were seated and taken care of immediately. Drinks and menus. I had a Mojito which was delicious. For my entree I had the Chuletas Can Can, my girlfriend had the caldo Gallego and my son had the churrasco. We loved it! So delicious, so tasty! Two thumbs up!!! The presentation and flavors all hit the spot. Trust me when I tell you, you will not be disappointed if you eat here. The Key thing with the chuletas is that if you get the chicharrón crunchy sometimes people overdo it and the meat portion of the pork chop is over cooked and dry. These were perfectly cooked. The churrasco was cooked at the perfect temperature. The soup was

Yelp
Food: I shared the grilled chicken with guava sauce with my friend and it was so delicious I wish I ordered one on my own. We also tried alcapurrias as appetizers and it was decent Price: reasonably priced, not as expensive as a fancier restaurant in a popular area like La Placita would be Atmosphere: very friendly waiters! we also sat on the patio and when it started raining, they rolled down a covering so we would stay dry

Yelp
Our server here, Joann, provided such great service for our visit here this past weekend. She was happy to provide us details of the entrees and was super efficient at bringing us what we needed. We had the smoked Chicharron and it was perfect, nice and crispy. The Empanadillas were also crispy with good flavor. For dessert, we had the carrot cake--a huge piece! It was nice and moist with tasty cream cheese icing. Lots of tables in this establishment. It started getting really busy at 6:30pm on a Friday night.
