7 Spots to Strike Explorer’s Gold

"This huge metal chicken, named “Eggee”,  perched on a hill overlooking the Pedro Dredge at Chicken Gold Camp in Chicken, Alaska, one of the few surviving gold rush towns in the state. It’s a sight you can’t miss within a small town with a name you surely won’t forget. The metal statue was created by high school students from recycled school lockers and presented to Chicken Gold Camp, which sponsors the annual Chickenstock Music Festival. The town of Chicken was named in 1902 when the community applied for a Post Office and needed a name.  The gathering of local miners who had flocked to the town for gold chose “Ptarmigan,” opting to name their little hub after the type of bird they frequently spotted in the area. But they soon ran into a problem—no one could actually agree on how to spell “ptarmigan.” So as not to ruffle the feathers of any future map readers with a fowl spelling error, the residents decided to call the town “Chicken” instead because the two birds look a bit similar and the word was easy to spell. The tiny town—its population dips down into the single digits in the winter—celebrates its connection with the popular farm animal. Chicken’s humorous naming story is immortalized by the giant metal chicken sculpture off the main road (just off Airport Road at Chicken Gold Camp). There are other chicken decorations within the small downtown area, too, each one a charming addition to the still-active mining community." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

If you taking the loop and going by Chicken stop for sure. We took a side trip from Tok, about 1.5 hours one way. The whole place is fun good for an hour. The old gold dredge is the most interesting. We had some chicken pot pie, good, expensive. The pies and cinnamon buns locked really good

What an amazing thing it is to be in Chicken Alaska. It’s really difficult to get there but so worth the effort. The scones were very special and the experience was spectacular. If you are up for adventure go here.

Google
Stop as this place is called Chicken. It is adorable. Was about to leave when a mother moose and her baby walked passed our park car. Incredible. We didn’t see anyone. Nor did we eat there we just stopped to take a look.

Google
Awesome food and great stories from the owner and employees. This is a true Alaskan backwoods small cafe, 60 miles from the nearest highway. Prices are high but reasonable when you consider how far they have to go for supplies, and your talking Alaska. A true wilderness area a.

Yelp
Let me tell you all about a little place in Chicken, Alaska!! WOW! Homemade food is an understatement. These guys are hard-working, friendly, and Chef's. The service was perfect and with a smile. Had a homemade hamburger with homemade pickles and homemade buns. Delicious. Wanted the homemade Blueberry pie but was too full with the Burger. The inside is cozy; the mosquitos are mighty so sitting outdoors may be questionable even though there are seats outside. Well worth finding and exploring this whole-in-the-countryside place!!!

Yelp
Do the pot pie-you will order another to take home-delicious!

Yelp
This is one of the wonders of the middle of nowhere cafes where freshly baked pies and sweety treaties are made daily.. The location is hard to miss, just at the end of a three part business of gift shop, saloon, and cafe. My companion and I both ordered burgers, mine with bacon and cheese. These suckers were a 1/3 of a pound with fresh tomatoes, lettuce (green not iceberg, which was what I was afraid of) and onion. Choice of sides were coleslaw or potato salad. Both were good, though not as good as the burger. Good place to hit up if you ever get in that area.

Yelp
We stayed here overnight. The blueberry pie was delicious, the apple pie was yummy. Breakfast was terrific. I had the chili cheese omelet and the homemade chili was amazing. It came with a generous helping of home fries and a huge piece of homemade sourdough bread. Mouthwatering and tasty. A cute little place and I highly recommend it. Chicken Sue, the owner, does all the baking. The cinnamon rolls are to die for.

Yelp
We stopped in Chicken on our way to Dawson City, YT via the Top of the World Highway. We were not real hungry, so we each had a slice of pie, blueberry pie with ice cream and cherry pie. We were not disappointed with our snack. Both pies were excellent. She had other good looking baked goods on display.

Yelp
If you get to Chicken this is definitely the place to stop and eat. I was tempted to have the Complete Chicken Meal ($1.50 if I recall correctly) but opted for burger and fries before heading back to Tok. The service and food was excellent and seating plentiful.

Yelp
Good food and a good place for a rest if you're traversing the Top of the World Highway between Tok and Dawson.

Yelp
Don't be put off by the funky (but fun) exterior. The food is excellent. I had the grilled chicken, cole slaw and a piece of homemade apple pie. I enjoyed it all. Well worth the stop. There is also one gas pump if you want to fuel up.
