A breathtaking example of architettura barocca in the heart of Lecce. The Chiesa di San Matteo is simply stunning — its curved façade (facciata curva), richly sculpted columns (colonne scolpite), and decorative details make it stand out as a masterpiece of 17th-century design. The symmetry, the play of light on the stone, and the dramatic nicchie vuote (empty niches) give the church a unique personality. You can’t walk by without stopping to admire it. Inside, the atmosphere is peaceful and sacred — molto tranquilla e spirituale — offering a beautiful contrast to the theatrical Baroque exterior. Un capolavoro del Barocco leccese! A must-see in Lecce for architecture lovers and photographers.

Nice church to visit with the 11€ ticket that gets you into the Basilica (7€ just for this), Cathedral and 2 other churches (this one) as well. Now that is worth it and it is like a treasure hunt by following the map and getting you around the old city.

Wow, this place is absolutely beautiful. I was completely impressed. I didn’t go upstairs and didn’t go inside, but even from what I saw from the outside, I was truly amazed. I definitely recommend visiting it.

Beautiful barocco church built by Borromini's grandson. Very interesting example of Salento barocco both on fasade and inside

A piece of history on Lecce.... Great value on the family ticket: € 17,00 to visit the Duomo, Museo Diocesano; San Matteo, Santa Chiara and Santa Croce Church’s. Take your time and enjoy!!!!

Just went in front , but no place to sit and watch… need tickets to go inside unfortunately. The descriptor on the left side is extremely technical about the architectural components. It’s a super awkward location but beautiful! I wish I knew what all the shapes on the facade mean.

Great place to Pray and to be near your religious figure. I was raised a catholic so this is a very significant place for me. I really advise to get the 9€ ticket and visit this and many more churches of the area

In line to enter the church.. The couple in front says "residents", go in for free... I need a ticket. I ask politely how they know they were residents... For the accent is the answer. Get the right accent, all the doors will open for you in Lecce
